Alpaca can be used. But alpaca, as any wool, can vary a lot in quality. And softer wools are not very well suited for this type of braiding. They tend to rip while tightening. I recommend to make a small sample and then decide.

what type of string are you using? I was thinking of using alpaca wool but is it too soft?
