  • Over the past while I have had the pleasure and honour of being given access to some large HO scale model railways. The most notable way of seeing these has been with a "cab ride". The camera is taken aboard the layout and proceeds to document trackage with an engineers view. I thought I should do a modest compendium of 3 such train rides, so here it is.
First up is a private layout I visited awhile back. It has table to ceiling mountains and an avid modeller as an owner. This is the Thunder Mountain and Northern.
Second along is a club layout that has been presented at numerous model shows and always receives high marks from attendees. This is the Victoria Model Railway Club, which has an extensive, open yard and a highly-scenicked section.
    / victoria-model-railway...
The last presented here is from the 6th Annual BC Free-mo Meet held in Chilliwack, BC. This is a collection of modules strung together into an extensive and varied layout of almost 400 feet. They could make this into a quite different layout, next time, simply by re-ordering all the same modules. The cab ride covers many scale miles. coldslapfreemo....
My thanks to all those who have allowed me onto their railways, and to the engineers of the trains.
Recorded with a Canon XA10 HD, Sony HDR-CX110 HD, Sony HDR-AZ1 HD, Canon T5i/700D HD, Nikon AW110 HD, Viofo A119 HD and Canon SX30IS.
Edited and produced using Cyberlink PowerDirector 17 Ultimate.
N.B.The photographer and cameras did not encroach on the line of the right-of-way in taking this video except where specific permission was obtained from the property owner. It is dangerous, foolhardy (and illegal) to enter on railway rights-of-way especially where you are 87 times bigger than the surroundings. You could do a great deal of damage. Just sayin' ... "You don't stand on a runway to watch airplanes."
This video and audio material may not be reproduced in any form (except as an embedded video on any other website), without written permission.

What kind of engine is it that makes that characteristic whine? Not all diesel - electrics make that particular sound. Excellent layout and operations, and I especially like the involvement! How cool to have guests in to experience the model layout and for the modelers to get recognition and to teach and to show.. props on the tree and shrubs groupings. Rather than a bunch of plants stuck on, they are natural groupings the way they are in nature.

It's actually a 21.8mm lens on a Sony HDR AZ1 POV camera. It does give a better all round view without too much distortion. Also, when mounted on an HO scale flat car it fits within the NMRA HO loading gauge.

Skeena Pacific, huh?? You think I didn’t know I was clicking on a model railroad video?? Holy cow, it’s worse than I thought! You’ve never even heard of a model steam locomotive! 😉 Well let me clue you in! Steam was the only source of power powering railroad locomotives back in the old days, from the beginning of railroading all the way into the 1950’s. Well actually, Diesel locos began to replace steam in the late 1930s, however, it took about ten years for diesels to be the standard engine power used. In the 1950s, diesels began taking over steam power, as they were easier to maintain, and more efficient. However, it’s just a boring glorified big rig truck if it ain’t a mighty steam engine! So that’s why your video bores me! Haha! But I have to say, y’all have a damn nice layout! 👍 I just wish more model railroaders lives steam like I do.😞
