You two were a large part of encouraging me to acquire and start the great books. Finished the Iliad. Going through the Odyssey.

I love these guys. I hope they’re doing okay. I found them in the beginning, then just reconnecting now.

I am reading them with audiobooks which really helps me keep moving. This is challenging stuff but I am getting some interesting nuggets as I go.

I have a set of the great books and I read them sporadically. Very sporadically. I appreciate your enthusiasm. I listen to almost anyone who endorses a true liberal education. I look forward to hearing what you have to say in the future. Keep it up.

@@greatconversation Will you announce what part of the Great Books you intend to discuss each Sunday? Do you encourage viewers to read material before your videos each week?

You may want to skim some books and come back to them later. Maybe jump up to one of the novels for motivation and to keep it a joyful experience. Don quixote rocked my world!

Hey look everybody! It’s the Captain and Tennille, the Sonny and Cher of Great Books.
For the new year you two need to start your videos singing a duet like Sonny and Cher. Sing “I Got you Babe”.

Welcome Back and Happy New Year 2023, to You both!
I had a question for You both, I have the 2nd Edition of “The Great Conversation” It looks a little thinner, it also looks like the 10 Year Reading list was different, was just wondering if Reading that one counts or not given it’s thinner than the 1st Edition? It looks like it would take literally an hour or 2 to read it by itself. While the First Edition takes 4 to 5 hours.
Also, I have some similar books called “Gateway To The Great Books” it is a series of 10 Volumes. I thought I should mention them because in the first of those 10 books it introduces the Great Ideas as Concepts that early Middle Schoolers. (6th or 7th Graders), could understand or interpret? Do You guys think that age is too Young and these should be for interpreted for High Schoolers or College students only?
At what age would in Your opinions would be the best to study these Works and gain true interpretation or understanding?

      Thanks for the warm welcome!
I think the biggest difference would probably be the authorship. I looked into it and both you're talking about here appear to be written by Norman Melchert vs the edition we read by Hutchins. ***If I am wrong about your question... please forgive me, but I will continue with this perspective.*** Since they are both written by Melchert than I would safely assume he decided to consolidate the information in vol. 2 for the sake of the reader.
We have talked a LOT about when to introduce our children to the great books. The more we discuss it the more we are leaning towards the age of 13 years old as a starting point for the great books. For use 13 is the transitional age from childhood into the beginning stages of development into adulthood and this time period towards 18 would give them some time to cover a number of books in the great books set.
I've heard of the gateway to the great books, but have not taken time to research them. If I can I'll take some time to look into them.
Thanks for commenting! It's great to have you joining in on our Great Conversation.
