    Robert E. Lee once said that the confederacy said that what they did should not be memorialized. He’d be outraged to see a school named after him bc of his part of the confederacy. Like the irony of bringing the name back is hilarious but also sad.

    Thomas Jefferson and James Madison are sensibly famous for better things than their admitted hypocrisy regarding the cause of liberty.
    World renowned singer Ella Fitzgerald was born in Newport News.
    Booker T. Washington, famous as an educator as well as author and orator, was born in Hale’s Ford and founded Tuskegee University.
    There are plenty of other Virginians whose accomplishments in literature, music, art, science and politics could be celebrated (the more if one turns to _local_ importance).

    One large High School I attended in Texas in the late 80's officially flew a slightly modified confederate flag. Students would use the actual one and do things like drive by rival schools before games waving these huge flags out the window. They were called "The Rebels" and the mascot was a confederate soldier called the colonel, complete with officers uniform and sword. They had all sorts of other confederate symbolism in the various team uniforms and logos. School motto was "The south shall rise again" I shit you not. The marching band also had flag bearers dressed as confederate soldiers and played several confederate tunes.
    The flag or flagging in a car was banned a few years after I transferred, not sure. But i was told it was due to a bad traffic accident. It still remained on logos and the school crest until like 2021 when I heard they ditched the colonel and rebels name for the Titans. Only 3 yrs ago... Now you know…the rest of the story, Good day.

      I recently drove from North Carolina to Florida, mostly on I-95. It's no surprise to see tons of gigantic American flags flying on the roadside on such a trip, usually in a built-up area. But it's really jarring when you hit South Carolina and you start seeing gigantic Confederate flags flying out in the middle of nowhere, protected by fencing with barbed wire on top. Cross the border into Georgia and then Florida and it's back to gigantic American flags.

    Confederate "memorials" were erected all over the south in the 1950-60's as a neo-Confederate message to Black Americans that they did not accept the US Constitution and the Civil Rights movement. This is the same thing, though updated. It's still neo-Confederates that believe in regressive cultural ideas, like racism, male dominance, religious hegemony, social conformity, and all the typical pushback against anything new or different (especially if it challenges the status quo). The neo-Confederates are why the USA is actually behind most civilized nations in so many social areas, such as health, family support, and worker security.

      @Stephen-gi1rx 4 місяці тому

      Name one new territory the Confederacy sought to expand itself into during the course of its short life. You seem to be confusing what the US did PRIOR to 1861 (eg the Mexican -American War) with what the Confederacy did on & after 1861.

    • @ytyehyeh
      @ytyehyeh 4 місяці тому +1

      @@Stephen-gi1rx That's kinda the point. They wanted such expansion as part of the U.S.A., were denied, so they seceded because of it (at least the states that listed the denial as a reason for seceding). I suppose the distinction between fighting for it (whether politically prior to secession or militarily afterwards) vs. seceding over it matters, but I'm glad we didn't find out what the C.S.A. would've done in that regard had their existence not been so short, or what the U.S.A would've become if those states had gotten their way and remained in the union.

    • @Stephen-gi1rx
      @Stephen-gi1rx 4 місяці тому

      @@ytyehyeh "They wanted such expansion as part of the U.S.A., were denied"
      Actually, the slave states got the expansion they wanted through the Mexican-American War. How do you think Arizona & New Mexico, et al, as territories became part of the US? Unfortunately, in so doing they blew up the Compromise of 1820. That led to the Compromise of 1850, but that got blown up itself not long after by the Kansas-Nebraska Act debacle, which led to the collapse of the Whigs & the rise of the Republican Party, who came to be perceived as an antislavery party..
      ytyehyeh: "so they seceded because of it"
      No, they seceded because the Republican Party won the 1860 presidential election (in part because the Southerners insisted on running their own candidate, who in turn split the Democrat vote).
      ytyehyeh: "I'm glad we didn't find out what the C.S.A. would've done in that regard had their existence not been so short"
      You don't seem to understand why the slave states were pushing for the expansion in the first place: to avoid the free states outnumbering the slave states by a wide enough margin to allow the abolition of slavery via a constitutional amendment. By forming a union of their own in 1861 with no free states at all the motivation for ANY expansion was thereby removed. (From 1800 to 1846 the nunber of free states & slave states was the same. That ended in 1846, which by no small coincidence was the first year of the Mexican-American War. By 1858 there were 17 free states and 15 slave states.)

      I totally agree with the aspect of teaching the history, but do we need to, or should we, uplift people in history who were treasonous or lacked the values we would like to project onto our kids or others? I’m 52. I grew up loving Bill Cosby (through Fat Albert, The Cosby Show, and his comedy). Would I suggest though that a statue of him be erected, or support a school being named after him now, no. He still holds a place in the history of our popular culture (which cannot be denied or removed) but it doesn’t mean we need to, or should, celebrate him going further. Maybe you disagree?
