Thanks! Sorry I don't have a translation for you. I wish I could figure out how to get good UA-cam translations. Maybe that will be my goal for 2025! Thanks so much for writing!

Congratulations, Grant! Loved the story. "Don't expect me to be a mahjong tile squeezing expert, all of a sudden!" I won't forget that line. And also: 11:59 Very clever! ;-)

Wouldn't it be nice if I could get to 3000 quickly so I could tell another story! It seems like it is growing fast lately. I will try to make some really good videos in 2025 and try to improve the channel, so hopefully it won't be long.

I sure was lucky to get that hand job! I couldn't believe that they took photos of all the men's hands, and because my hands were similar enough, they said, 'This is the man who should get the hand job!' Maybe it will happen again one day. I can only hope.

I liked the Flash. Not exactly Hollywood insider but it was fun and quite frankly, you always hear about shows and films being shot in Vancouver but never anything about the local industry. I like the idea of the challenge Canadian actors face portraying comic book Americans. Cheers.

It's funny, because thousands of people are involved in this business, but you're right, not a lot of information gets out. They are actually quite secretive, just due to knowing who is in town, where they are, what they are working on. They are quite strict about not posting any photos from the set, that can get you fired and blacklisted pretty quick. I don't mind posting the stuff in this video because it was a few years ago. But I wouldn't have done it if it had been earlier this year.

Thanks Cristina! I always have a lot of fun telling these stories and making these videos.
And I like to spend some time thinking about my life. I suppose that is typical when people get to a certain age.
But for me, living the life I've lived, it often feels peculiar to think about all the places I've been and people I've met.
      Thanks for writing Cristina!

Poverty and/or foreign escapades make the best stories. I hope you write us a funny memoir. I love David Sedaris but he’s running out of stories. Me talk pretty one day was hilarious because as someone who had to learn German, I had so many cringe moments myself. I’ve seen some UA-camrs interject in the middle of their videos to ask for likes and subscriptions and comments, and that they have set a goal of (insert number of subscribers), for a certain time frame. Seems to do the trick. Would be nice if you could get some money for your efforts and for entertaining us all, A very Merry Christmas 🎄 to you and your family and wishing you much UA-cam success in 2025.

Hello Scarba, I don't like to keep begging for clicks and subscribers, even though it seems that's what everyone does. I think, 'If people like the videos, they know what to do.'
I guess talking about very obscure literature isn't the best business model for a modern UA-cam audience.
In spite of that, it is growing, every month, more subscribers. And I'm still having fun, which is the most important thing for me.
I've been sitting here for an hour, replying to comments, and enjoying myself rather thoroughly. Everyone is so supportive, encouraging and well-read; it really cheers me up.
Hope you are well. Thanks for all the support and comments. Hope you've got some good books planned for 2025!

@ then the algorithm Gods are shining upon you…. My sister just bought me two Graeme Macrae Burnet books, a Scottish author. I’m sadly out of the loop when it comes to the thriving Scottish literary scene. I’ve never warmed to the German one. I read only non fiction in German and only English for pleasure. I’m a very fast reader in English and German is frustrating because they need at least a third more words to say the same thing in English and sentences are very long with the verb at the end. I take no pleasure in it unless I’m looking for information. For book club we are reading an Egyptian author, Naguib Mahfouz. Thank you for your honest and funny reviews, warmest regards from a long migrated Scot in Germany 🇩🇪

@@scarba Thanks a lot for that Scarba! Reading in Germans sounds pretty bad. I've heard about that whole 'verb at the end' situation. It must be hell for those translators at the UN. I like the piling of words together to make new constructions when needed. It was the same with Hungarian, you could easily stick different parts together to come up with the words you needed, or just to have fun, as was most often the case.
I'm at a loss to name hardly any Scottish writers. Irvine Welsh, of course. The guy who wrote 'How Late it Was, How Late.' I read Margaret Oliphant at school this last semester. I've probably read more Scottish writers than I know. I have a bad North American way of lumping everyone from the UK together.
Muriel Spark was Scottish, there's a name to be proud of!
In Canada the literary scene is dead, and as someone who has just come out of university creative writing classes, I can assure you there will be no Canadian authors of note for a long while to come.
Today one of the most loved Canadian novels is called 'How to Pronounce Knife.' The stories are not bad, individually, but every single one is exactly the same. The whole collection becomes extremely tedious. I was nearly crucified for saying it was just mediocre.

@ I was in Edinburgh this summer and the bookshops are to die for. Big comfortable leather chairs and strong coffee and if you’re lucky, a view of the castle. They promote homegrown authors, so the books are on the tables to walk around. Everyone interacts and comments and suggests good reads. I absolutely loved it. You should try and stop there on the way to Japan. Unfortunately I didn’t make it to Leakey’s bookshop in Inverness. A bibliophile’s dream.

Here's something weird, as detailed and seemingly unnecessary for that those background actors feel when establishing a scene shot there are viewers (such as me) who focus on those very details. Its as if the real movie plays out on the edges of camera focus. Your seemingly inconsequential acting is what solidifies to the viewer the 'reality' of the scene. The illusion is essential for the Director's slight-of-hand, which when it succeeds allows for the audience to see the magicians helper sawed in half. Background becomes foreground to those looking to be tricked and finding an illusion so thorough even your shoelaces had the proper Nazi tie for those looking deep. Haha, amazing stories! Merry Christmas and happy healthy 2025!

Thanks for writing James! It's a fun world to be a part of. Especially since a lot of filming is done in Vancouver, and often in several of the same locations that are made to look like different spaces. There is a mansion that is constantly being rented out by the film industry as a 'location' I've been there on a dozen different jobs for half a dozen different shows, but always the same house. There is a reform school in Vancouver that is Always used for prisons and haunted places. I've been there as a security guard and an inmate. The funny thing is that almost all the shows get almost all the same extras, so if you looked very carefully, you might even start to recognize some of them. Actually, I only do jobs for one agency, so there are probably hundreds of other jobs I don't even know about that are done with other agencies, just in Vancouver alone.
      Merry Christmas to you!

This was a lot of fun. 😊 I love stories about crappy jobs. There isn't enough good literature about regular jobs, despite it being such a huge part of most people's lives.
Funny coincidence: Three of the BookTube channels I watch the most -- you, @CriminOllyBlog, and @saintdonoghue -- all don't drive/ don't own cars. 🤷‍♂️

    • @grantlovesbooks
      @grantlovesbooks  12 днів тому

Thanks Contraband! I looked at the original manuscript I started in 2018 about the casino. I didn't remember it was almost 80,000 words. That's nearly a novel already. At least I have that to play with when my life settles down.
I do drive, or I should say I have a licence. But I have no love for cars, and think they are generally a waste of money. We rented a car and drove to Whistler for a weekend trip, and that was nice. But I can't be bothered with cars.
Of course I'll have to learn how to drive on the other side once we get to Japan. That should be fun!
