Japan isn’t actually an empire anymore. People just still call the emperor the emperor because it stuck after Japan being an empire for so long. So, technically, they should be called the Japanese royal family.
天皇(TENNO) means the Emperor. Historicaly, the emperor has no political power unlike european monarchy. But Japanese people think the emperor as descendant of sun god Amaterasu. So the emperor means son of gods in Japan.
But their superiority complex far exceeds other snobby billionaires in the world. The current Emperor of Japan has 44 million dollars as inheritance from Hirohito himself. They see other non-royal people as "commoners" and that's where the term came around and another funfact, Elon Musk is also a commoner in their eyes too.

Narrowly defined, an empire is a sovereign state with an emperor as its head of state. Not every empire is made up of multiple states. The imperial title, rank-wise, is above that of king or queen, and was sometimes used for that reason. Another example of that would be the emperors of Russia. The Romanovs adopted the imperial title under Peter I, before they had annexed Finland, Poland, or other states into their empire. Conversely, numerous European countries besides England continued as kingdoms, even though they maintained sovereignty over other states and colonies: Sweden, Denmark, France, Spain, Portugal, The Netherlands, and unified Italy.
