Your story is very relevant. I was getting a travel visa and ended up walking outside in the govt district in my full tweeded gear, cashmere coat, leather bag, etc (all thrift shop purchases by the way).. heading to get a nice lunch as a treat at an expensive hotel and a major lawyer partner was crossing the street at the same time. Seemed like a nice guy, he just started talking to me thinking we had met before and that I was going to the well known establishment gentleman's club near by. The conversation continued as we walked so I learned a great deal about him and left him wondering who I was but we would inevitably soon meet up again (since we must certainly travel in the same circles... not). Had I been in jeans and a parka (it was snowing at bit) he would not have given me the time of day I expect. LOL

I don't dress down, but I do "bag down." That means I avoid fancy/expensive-looking luggage, since those are more likely to be chosen by a thief faced with the need to pick out ONE suitcase.

Once when I was waiting in the security line in München, I saw a well-dressed gentleman who was ordered to remove his shoes. Most probably the metal shank in his shoes triggered the detector. When he removed his shoes, his socks were full of holes, you could see his toes far away. This was a really unpleasant situation. Poor guy.
So good socks are important because normally you should never take off your shoes, but this is an exceptional situation. On some airports, the metal detector equipment is very sensitive, so you have either remove your shoes and put it next to your other stuff, or be screened by security (which is a good option if you want a fast free feet massage). I heard, some shoe company make shoes with wooden shanks (they broke with time), or even better, with carbon fiber. These are good options for frequent travelers. I think Chelsea boots are the best travel shoes. They look great, work with both casual and formal clothing. They are also loose fitting so you can wear them for a long time without killing your foot. You can also run in them if you have to.

I was taught to always dress well when traveling. I never knew why, I just did. While doing so for work one time I was waiting for my boarding and an older gentleman befriended me cause he was also dressed well. He said "I'm glad there are still some people that dress up when they travel", "why do people dress up anyways"? I asked. "Well, you never know, if the plane goes down at least you'd be well dressed, think of the plane as a huge coffin". We laughed.🤣😭

There was an American in the line infront of me at the airport once and he started taking off his shoes, belt and everything and the airport security asked him why he was getting undressed in public.

I plan to fly out to Los Angeles or Sacramento later this year and I usually would take two Bayer low milligram aspirin (80 Mgs) and no alcohol (promotes jet lag). Prior to traveling, I would wear a linen blazer, button-down oxford or polo shirt, chinos, with loafers.

I fly long haul a lot. I find having clothing with tiny bit of elastin to be helpful because the material makes everything else flex. Having a washable blazer also helps. I know this is unconventional, but some clothiers do design washable blazers that don't look cheap. This way when one arrives, one can get laundry service on a gentle cycle and will still be looking sharp and next day. Keeping an extra outfit including alternate ties and pocket squares in the carryon along with underwear is a must.

I used to work for an airline-owned company and we got travel benefits. Whenever we or our family members used our benefits, we were required to be dressed in business clothes or business casual. We were also supposed to make ourselves available to assist cabin crew in case of an emergency. That never came up. However, being dressed well often got me upgraded and once, when the meal service was canceled due to a delayed departure and a fast transit to try to make up some of the delay, the cabin crew gave me a crew lunch when they found out that I was an airline employee and I had missed getting food before we left because my incoming flight was delayed. There was a kerfuffle a couple years ago in the media that two teenaged girls were denied boarding on a flight because they were only wearing leggings and sweatshirts. What got downplayed or dropped from the stories was that the girls were flying space available on industry family passes. It gets drilled into us at work and we are supposed to stress to our kids and family members that, when traveling on a pass, you dress appropriately. If they had been boys wearing tee-shirts and board shorts they would have been denied boarding as well.

I wear dark jeans with stretch i the denim, oxford cloth in light blue, V-neck sweater usually blue in thin cotton (easily washable), thin wool or mostly wool blend with some nylon knee length socks, and roomy oxford shoes for when my feet swell on the flight I untie them. A merino wool beanie (not itchie and warm) in my carry on for when it is colder where I am going or colder at home (best warmth for weight and size). A 3/4 length thin cotton overcoat is alsk great to have (roll up and put in storage bin). 1 baby aspirin and try to drink water prior to flight.

Also, Suede shoes work really nicely for traveling because they do not scratch if you hit something in restricted space. I usually wear well-fitting Suede Oxfords or Loafers. Not much extra effort to lace a five-eyelet shoe. Would still avoid high boots though. ;) I really like a layering with a cardigan over a dress shirt as well to accommodate for change of temperature in the cabin while still allowing to stow it within the portfolio bag without consuming much space.

Very nice video Rafael! You provide a lot of useful and practical comments, not only from a style perspective, but also to help us navigate easily through the airport TSA process. As you suggest, avoid metal accessories which helps preclude having a metal detector go off. If I may... allow me to comment on something I’ve found beneficial. If a traveler has some Allen Edmonds in his wardrobe, I would recommend wearing a pair when at the airport, (slip on/no laces preferred), as AE shoes are made without metal and won’t trigger any metal detectors. Anyway, just a thought. Rafael, thanks for sharing your thoughts on this important topic!

The whole idea of what to wear for traveling (especially business casual) brings up the concept of "Traveller Fabrics" High twist, fresco, hopsack, Mock Leno, etc. Basically crisp, hard wearing, wrinkle free sport jackets and suits. In the USA this also means dress shoes without steel shanks (thanks Allen Edmonds) and carbon fiber belts all to deal with the TSA precheck detectors of a frequent USA flyer.

I recently went on a round the world flight with 2 main stopovers. My first leg was in business class on Lufthansa 747-400 upper deck. Quite a few Germans changed into pyjamas during the flight which I thought made sense. I can't see myself dressing up for long haul flights even in business class. Flying is extremely uncomfortable for me so I like to be casual but with a clean and neat appearance. I like BR traveler pants with a nice cotton t-shirt and a fine cotton zipper jacket/sweater. I wore a nice grey suede sneakers for foot comfort even though I will take them off and use the supplied slippers during the flight. This works for me at least. I also wore an ArcTeryx Delta LT sweater jacket, as it is like fleece but looks like a sweater. It's great since it can get pretty cold in the plane and it doesn't look too sporty or outdoorsy. The warmth to weight ratio for Arcteryx is great.

When some people show up at the airport looking like they just rolled out of bed in their PJ's, you really stand out on the opposite spectrum being the well dressed guy. I've noticed that people do look at you very differently as well approach you in a very pleasant way when they sit next too you being well dressed. Because for all they know you could be some corporate exec of a company they probably know. But they don't know either way if your are or not. The fact you dress well, most people figure your someone of some importance as almost everyone else besides other business travelers are completely dressed down.

I usually wear jeans and a button up or polo shirt. If I am bringing a jacket to wear I am going, I wear the jacket as that saves room in my luggage. For shoes, I usually wear a pair of slip-on vans because all of my shoes nicer than that have laces and I don't like having to spend time tying and untying my shoes (Loafers are on my list for my next shoe purchase). I usually just deal with the fact that I have to take off my belt and watch, so I usually wear my nicer ones of them as I am not going to not wear a belt (I don't like side adjusters) and I am not going to leave my watch in the carry-on bag that I have. I also have TSA pre-check, but I will never pay for it again after it expires: I always apply my known passenger number to my flight, but I have only gotten it twice out of the last twelve flights that I have been on since getting it, definitely not worth the money that I spend for it.

I prefer elastic gym shorts and a t-shirt. Let's be honest about air travel, it's not the glitz and glamor it used to be. You want to go through the security line as quickly and hassle free as possible, and an elastic short is the way to go.

I know I'm four years late to the party, but I'd also recommend more closely fitting clothing. _It's important to note that I do not intend any fear-mongering when I say this,_ but as much as safety in the aviation industry has improved, we (as passengers) have a responsibility to be prepared for an evacuation event. The last thing anyone wants is for you to be trapped ( and trap the passengers behind you) because your trouser cuff got snagged on the escape hatch of the aircraft. Long overcoats can be used as stretchers; ascots, with their excessive fabric, would make for the most useful bandages of the different types of neckwear (obviously excluding scarves, but scarves can get caught just like trouser cuffs). However, *do not take your carry-on while evacuating the plane.* The time you take to wrestle with your bag are precious moments that need to be used to get passengers off the plane. *Suits are replaceable, souls aren't!!*

100%. Just as everyone else is a part (positive or negative) of our travel experience, so are we to others, so I always like to dress up rather than down for flights. As you say, all sorts of things are more, even if maybe only a tiny bit more, likely to come your way if you look smart and trustworthy. There may be very little romance left in air travel these days, but let that sad trend not be down to us...

Footwear, if on holiday wear the heaviest shoes you are taking with you, better yet boots that will give you the greatest chance of survival if the plane is forced to land or crash and you must escape the area across rough ground or broken glass.

Personally, I have had good experiences with carrying things like watches, rings, keys, spare change, and anything else that you might want to carry with you, but would have to remove at security, into Ziploc bags, which can be quickly and easily removed from pockets and are an essential tool for travelling by plane, anyway, due to liquid regulations. This way, your essential valuables you simply feel you cannot be without can pass through security easily and quickly, aren't lost with the luggage, and can potentially be put on in the time between security check and boarding.

    Good advise.
I always dress smart casual: long sleeve button down shirt + chino/technical jeans. Shoe is either leather boots or high rise converse shoe.
I always fly long haul (13 hours minimum or more when having connect flights) so my aim is wear smart and yet comfortable. So no suit.

Sven I'm not sure if taking 3 aspirins is good enough to prevent a dvt on a long flight. My advice to you would be to get up and walk every hour. The contraction of muscles around the veins stimulates circulation. Hope you have better luck with your luggage on future flights

In your case, a mid weight cotton dress slacks and a unstructured jacket should do the trick. The jacket doesn't have to be a ring jacket but anything that is presentable: bomber jacket, Harrington jacket, field jacket... Remove the neckwear once you have arrived at your destination and you would still look stylish.

When traveling with a suit and multiple dress shirts, do you fold them delicately into your rolling luggage? Or do you opt for a garment bag in addition to roller luggage and a beefier briefcase?

The cufflinks aren't really an issue. I wear a watch, and you wouldn't be able to pay me to take it off. So I just go through the metal detector and accept the fact that they will pat down my wrists. Also if you are paying for TSA pre, you can wear a lace up because you don't have to take them off. They are also more versatile.

I am a British Asian and our elders only wore a suit whenever they flew. We laugh about it now, but it really was a luxury for them, a special occasion, and they would make friends they would keep for life on those flights
