With around 50,000 acres to look after, featuring a number of rural businesses, it’s fair to say Anson MacAuslan, Estate Manager, Welbeck Estates, Caithness, has a diverse and varied role. This extends to the overall management of the estate’s agricultural, commercial forestry and sporting enterprises. It also has a large property portfolio and is currently restoring its peatland to help sequester carbon.
Chris explains: “The livestock we have here are suited to the ground; they thrive in these conditions, whereas many other breeds would not. We tend to stick to hill breeds, as they are low input and easier to manage.”
Also matched to the ground and the conditions is the estate’s choice
of tractors, the latest of which is a CLAAS ARION 420, supplied by local dealer W and A GEDDES, Wick. With 100hp, it has to cope with the estate’s diverse work load, with farm duties that include feeding and bedding cattle, muck and fertiliser spreading, and cleaning buildings out.
