Welp this has aged like 1 month old unrefrigerated milk. Is any media outlet who covered going to recant their allegations? Time to step up to the plate.
Lesson one: a comedy act is not the place to get news. Lesson two: the standard I see being raised to comedians, professional storytellers whose job is to get a laugh out of their audience, appears to be staggering higher than the one lowered to politicians, to whom lying and deceiving to then be empowered to decide on our lives seems not only not to be a problem but to be protected, a constitutional right, and part of their job description. My question then is: IS THIS A JOKE?
Lesson one is very true. Your lesson 2 is true, however misses the point (as does this news clip). The stories he made up about his high school prom date ditching him because “her family didn’t want her taking pictures with a brown kid” has resulted in her getting death threats and her family being attacked for being racist…and the story is completely false. Comedians should have a lot of freedom to make up whatever story they want to get a laugh, but not when it results in innocent people getting their lives turned upside down for something that isn’t true. He never apologized to these people. Never made any statements saying that his story wasn’t true until this piece came out. THAT is not okay. I highly encourage you to read her piece before jumping to conclusions. There is a lot of horrifying things in there that I am sure you would conclude is not okay
So…..who should be canceled? Seems this story hasn’t aged well, especially after the recent reply from Hassan Minhaj. Seems Clare Malone has some explaining to do.
Uh, name *one* instance where a person was cancelled for "less" than telling a not entirely true story as a comedian during a stand-up act! And I'm not even saying whether or not Minhaj was right or wrong to embellish stories in a comedy act (because I don't know where the line even is) - only that I can't think of a single instance off the top of my head in which someone got "cancelled" for *less* than that! So yes, can you please provide *one* example where someone got cancelled for "less" than a comedian embellishing a story during a stand-up act?
It is Story-telling. What do these people expect? The funny thing about this entire thing is that NEWS anchors are not being held to Journalistic integrity but Comedians are expected to.
The problem with Hasan is these werent told as jokes in a comedy context, but as literal stories about being oppressed as a Muslim, which we now know are all untrue.
If a comedian didn't know how to take everyday stories we relate to and make them funny, they wouldn't be comedians. I'm not worried if comedian takes liberty for laughs without diminishing the spirit of the story. It's not uncommon for them to take a story they can relate to from their friends and transpose it onto their own life to help audiences relate to it better when regaling on stage
That's not what he is doing though. He is fabricating stories that aren't funny, making himself out to be a victim and, in certain instances, harming actually people with his lies.
This guy tells the stories to divide america. He is more muslim than he is anything. Font cancel russel brand cancel this guy who is full of hate. He lies about having a hard life as an immigrant. But he makes his stuff up. He has never been leaned on by a cop. As a black man he does not know our hatd times.
This is beyond stupid. He's a comedian, the entire performance is a one man show. He's memorized every line he says, and comedians use exaggeration and lies to tell the truth, or to convey a point. Who is complaining about comedians lying? Who are these people who have no concept of the art form? If he went up there and told a story like The Three Little Pigs, nobody would jump up and say "You're lying, get him off the stage, pigs can't talk". The whole thing is nonsense. The real problem is the people complaining about this type of thing. If you don't like his act, great. Don't watch it.

Yup. Another news report that doesn’t share all the important facts and misses the point entirely: His stories that he made up have ruined people’s lives. The point isn’t that he is making up stories for telling jokes. Comedians do that all the time. The point is that the stories he makes up are directly targeted at people in his life that are easily discoverable with a little bit of research. Big difference between embellishing a story for a joke and embellishing a story to push a political narrative. We don’t go to comedy to be lectured to by liars.
Hasan admitted to her that he made up stories about the real people he exposed in his comedy specials. That's pretty foul and not normal for comedians to do.
People are raped and sexually assaulted too but if someone claimed that it happened to them and it didn’t then imagine the outrage. Same exact thing he is doing and making money off of. DISGUSTING!
Why is she more concerned about a comedian’s set rather than the work politicians are not doing? Obviously, she needs a story. There was an interview with CEO Tim Gurner who stated unemployment should be 50% to remind people they work for an employer not the other way around. This may not be niche enough for her though. One of the reasons more people rely on the Daily Show and other similar shows is due to BS stories like this one. This story has no traction, yet y'all pretend to have the pulse of the nation based on what's trending on X formerly known as Twitter. We want facts not whose first.
Because Hasan's show and comedy were politically driven. They have a political impact on viewers whether Hasan cares or not. Also, lying about real people has an impact on their lives.
We live in a society where people quote comedians as some sort of activists or intellectuals, instead of the buffoons they are, so not sure your sarcasm really fits the bill.
@@comment.highlighted You didn't answer the question. Did you personally think he was lying when he was telling the joke? Or if that's too much to answer, try this one. How many in the audience, do you think, thought it was a real story as it was being told???
Did he *ever* actually say these events were true or actually happened? Did he ever claim his specials are based on true stories? Yes, they *sounded* like they *could* have been true, but did he ever *say* in an official capacity that they *were* true? Or did we just *assume* they were? And if we just assumed that, why is that his fault?
When you lie about things like this it makes it harder for those who aren't lying to be believed. It's like when a person lies about being r@ped, this leads to ppl not believing others.

I think the difference here is he based his career telling woke comedy where the laughs come from sympathy of his oppression and faced racism rather than the jokes themselves. They're wokes, not jokes (Chappelle). The audience that appeal to him are those that either look like him or can relate to him or wokesters. It's way different from other comedy where you do it for laughs because you won't get attacked later for it. Using woke comedy just further stigmatizes an already minority group where they think they're always oppressed or discriminated against. This is why you get people that get 'offended' by jokes now and that comedians need to watch what they say because woke comedy has destroyed normal comedy or insult comedy.

You're really going to try to claim that filing a false police report is the same as embellishing stories in a comedy act? You *really* can't tell the difference between an *actual crime* and punching up stories for comedy (not even saying whether what Minhaj did was right or wrong, only that *no one* is accusing him of committing a crime - which *inherently* makes him *not at all close* to the guy who *did)?* Wow! He's not just telling jokes. Comedy isn't just one thing. Part of how he stands out is by telling stories that appear to be authentic. But he's lying in those moments of "authenticity" and his lies are about real people and have harmed them and made their lives miserable.
@ericmaddox1896 if he was a public speaker, then you would have a point... but he's not, he's a comedian. So unless he's telling these stories to news outlets directly then you are missing the first and most important part, HE'S A COMEDIAN. There is only 1 rule in comedy; make people laugh. There are no other rules. If you don't like the content then you don't have to take it in. But if you're looking for comedians to only tell true stories with no embellishments, you're going to be disappointed.

The nerve! This woman going on TV to support a story she knew damn well she'd manipulated. Shame on her.
Welp this has aged like 1 month old unrefrigerated milk. Is any media outlet who covered going to recant their allegations? Time to step up to the plate.
Why would they when he made a video publicly admitting theyre all true.

If a comedian didn't know how to take everyday stories we relate to and make them funny, they wouldn't be comedians.
