- Hasan Minhaj's act often includes experiences he says he's faced as an Asian American and Muslim American, but the comedian tells the New Yorker many of those stories either didn't happen to him or were embellished. Clare Malone, the staff writer for the New Yorker who spoke with Minhaj, joined CBS News to discuss the situation.

Does he have receipts that disprove his own statements? Making up stories about a real person and her family and not even hiding their IDs enough to prevent them being harassed and threatened? The guy is a lazy writer who wanted cheap victimhood cred because that's what mediocre artists do when the well of creativity runs dry:

Completely lied about the prom event where Bethany effectively cheated on him at the doorstep without him knowing at all. He himself admitted that didn't happen and he knew about it days in advance.
Even if what he said is completely true it still makes Bethany look like an asshole. Nobody owes him an apology.

He admitted that he made up the stories of people he labeled as racist. That's pretty bad and not the normal embellishing comedians do.

How are people defending him? Comedians embellish experience to make their stories funnier, and not to make it more emotional or make others seem racist. That is such a key difference. The stories in his standup included his pregnant wife being sent death threats and "suspicious" white powder. Not even mentioning all the people he claimed were "racist"
Also, it is not limited to venues meant for standup comedy. He has been in business for many years, and must know that people are actually believing what he is narrating as true events and not everyone who is reading his stories is buying a ticket to his comedy shows. But, at least to my knowledge, he never made any effort to correct anyone until pressed on the matter. To me, this implies a deliberate scheme to deceive.
Also, his lies include the names of real people who are then targeted for things that never happened so the whole "comedians always embellish" defense doesn't hold water.

@@claycan3243 He tells long truthful-sounding narratives that are pretty politically preachy. They don't come across like jokes. They come across like first-hand experiences he's trying to educate his audience with. He just cracks a joke in between every little bit. It's too much in this case.

I used to read the New Yorker. After watching his response video I realized that the writers are misleading. In this age of misinformation, it’s very difficult to find true reporting. I’m not renewing my subscription.

Minhaj told fictional stories in a stand-up act that he *never* said was factual or "based on a true story" (people just assumed they were "true" because he used several real details from his life, like his actual name and where he actually grew up), but *never* while under oath or in a way that wasted taxpayer dollars.
Whether or not you think that move is right or wrong, it is *not at all* even *close* to what Smollett did! Smollett filed an *actual* false police report and committed an *actual* crime. Minhaj told exaggerated stories. These are *not* the same by *any* means!
People have been cancelled FOR WAY LESS than this.

And I'm not even saying whether or not Minhaj was right or wrong to embellish stories in a comedy act (because I don't know where the line even is) - only that I can't think of a single instance off the top of my head in which someone got "cancelled" for *less* than that!

This conversation is exhausting
Something always felt off about this guy, and you could see it in how other comedians would react to him when they shared a stage. The eye rolls from his peers were barely suppressed. He always has to be the biggest person in the room. That's fine for comedy, but it's not compatible with advocacy work, and whatever he might claim, he bears the responsibility that comes with advocating for other people. I see no sense of humility or acknowledgement of that responsibility. More disturbingly, the fact that he lied about stories that really didn't have any comedic value, where he paints himself as the victim, and where his lies negatively impacted real people is utterly despicable. He's not elevating these issues by lying or exaggerating. He's handing racists more ammunition to scream "fake news" about valid accusations of racism from other people. He's making it less likely that the truth will be taken seriously by treating the truth like a joke. This isn't "complicated" because it's "art". I heard the "Boy Who Cried Wolf" when I was 6 years old. He's undermining the struggle of people who don't have his high profile, all for the sake of social media clout and personal enrichment, and then failing to own up to it. These are the traits of a sociopath.
Most cries of racism are fake news. Probably only about 5% actually racist. The rest is people pointing fingers for their own failures.

Lesson one: a comedy act is not the place to get news. Lesson two: the standard I see being raised to comedians, professional storytellers whose job is to get a laugh out of their audience, appears to be staggering higher than the one lowered to politicians, to whom lying and deceiving to then be empowered to decide on our lives seems not only not to be a problem but to be protected, a constitutional right, and part of their job description. Lesson one is very true. Your lesson 2 is true, however misses the point (as does this news clip).
The stories he made up about his high school prom date ditching him because “her family didn’t want her taking pictures with a brown kid” has resulted in her getting death threats and her family being attacked for being racist…and the story is completely false.
Comedians should have a lot of freedom to make up whatever story they want to get a laugh, but not when it results in innocent people getting their lives turned upside down for something that isn’t true.
He never apologized to these people. Never made any statements saying that his story wasn’t true until this piece came out.
THAT is not okay.

She twisted his words to make it quasi-salacious to match the story she was determined to tell. You have to listen to the audio tapes of the interview and compare them to what was written. They're talking about stuff he talked about in 2016. It's 2023.

Yes comedians make up stuff, if it's innocuous stuff, it doesn't matter, if you're presenting it in a way that says "Hey! This is the mirror I'm holding up to society!" then it absolutely does matter.

The point isn’t that he is making up stories for telling jokes. Comedians do that all the time. The point is that the stories he makes up are directly targeted at people in his life that are easily discoverable with a little bit of research.
It’s resulted in a innocent woman receiving death threats and her family being accused of being racist. He did nothing for them, refused to apologize, and never made any public statements saying that he made up stories about them until this report came out.

Nearly all comedians make up stories to entertain their audience.
Jon Stewart did the genre perfectly and now people are copying him but bending the truth because they don’t have his talent. The jokes/ insight aren’t as strong as Stewart’s so they lean more into sympathy and outrage.

No they don't. I watch a lot of comedians, go to lots of stand up shows and they very rarely use real names in their jokes.

Obviously, she needs a story. There was an interview with CEO Tim Gurner who stated unemployment should be 50% to remind people they work for an employer not the other way around. This may not be niche enough for her though.
One of the reasons more people rely on the Daily Show and other similar shows is due to BS stories like this one. This story has no traction, yet y'all pretend to have the pulse of the nation based on what's trending on X formerly known as Twitter. We want facts not whose first.

Now that Hasan released his rebuttal video, CBS better offer an apology to Hasan! So mad CBS took this viewpoint. Clare Malone was clearly biased, you could hear it while she's talking in the video -- she has an opinion that Hasan shouldn't host the Daily Show. Her opinion totally clouded her objectiveness and she wrote a mislead and defamatory article. I hope Hasan sues her.
If a comedian didn't know how to take everyday stories we relate to and make them funny, they wouldn't be comedians. I'm not worried if comedian takes liberty for laughs without diminishing the spirit of the story. It's not uncommon for them to take a story they can relate to from their friends and transpose it onto their own life to help audiences relate to it better when regaling on stage

That's not what he is doing though. He is fabricating stories that aren't funny, making himself out to be a victim and, in certain instances, harming actually people with his lies.

There is a famous book called “I, Rigoberta Menchu: An Indian Woman in Guatemala” written by a Guatemalan author who was asked if those experiences in the book actually happened her. She admitted not all of them did, but the experiences certainly were real and happened to a Guatemalan Indian woman. I feel like it’s the same kind of situation.
Nonsensical comparison, he made up multiple stories about oppression to make political points including accusing a woman of racism because she didn’t want to go out with him. Not to mention he is a hard core supporter of racist Islamist Ilhan Omar.

@@joanna0988 My understanding is Hassan embellished on some stories, but that doesn’t mean every single thing he talked about was not true. If he committed slander I’m sure some lawyers would be ringing the victims’ phone nonstop to file a slam dunk lawsuit.
