My son was born 17 years ago on Pearl Harbor day. Needless to say, he is one of very few kids his age who know anything about WW2 history. Very patriotic young man compared to his peers.

Yes and they should be taught how great this country really is and that our short comings are far outweighed by the good America has done and stands for. Cleveland, Ohio.

@PoliticallyIncorrectMechanic They should learn the real truth that the Flying Tigers at Pearl Harbor were going to bomb 4 Japanese cities in December 1941.
That is why Pearl Harbor was bombed as a preemptive strike in self-defense. The Americans were the aggressors and the ones who started the war, not the Japanese.

    Of course.
Given the country children should be taught their own history and on their age and grade level. Kids can handle a lot more than people think they can.

If you want to read about WW2 in Asia, the author to read is Theodore H White. .. He became fluent in the Chinese languages before he went to China in ~1933. He lived with Mao Zedong and Chiang Kai-shek during the 1930s. His books are AWESOME.

Getting ready for Thursday. I live one mile away from Pearl Harbor overlooking the entire base including Joint Base Hickam. My mother was 14 years old on the day of the attack living about a half mile away. She was out in their yard when the Zeros began flying over shooting and bombing. She told of the explosions and smoke rising. They initially thought that it was a military exercise until her brother stood on a table and heard a bullet whiz by his head. They could see the rising sun emblem on the planes, then the reality of the Japanese attack turned to panic as the neighborhood began their trek up into the sugarcane fields above the harbor area. She told of witnessing the explosions aboard the ships and seeing bodies flying off the decks. Then a Zero crashed into a field along the sugarcane haul road leading higher and away from the harbor. She saw the pilot slumped half way out of the cockpit. She said that could never forget the smell of a burning body.
My father’s dad was also interned in Utah, then transferred to Manzanar. He was released after the war and was planning on attending college at Davis hoping to become a doctor, but he died prematurely. My father and most of his friends enlisted in the Army hoping to prove their loyalty as citizens of the United States. Before leaving for basic training his uncle told him to serve honorably and never bring shame to the family, but don’t unnecessarily be a hero. He went on to serve in the Military Intelligence Service providing translation for the officers. The MIS, 100th Infantry Battalion, and the 442nd RCT all eventually received the Congressional Medal in 2010.
Both of my parents died in 2021. Their history has been passed down to my four children. I have one son who is a pastor, another serving in the Hawaii National Guard, and my youngest son who is a Cadet Commander in the Civil Air Patrol Hawaii Wing.
The theme of this year’s ceremony is inclusive of past, present, and future service members. Each of the service branches will place a commemorative wreath during the ceremony at the Memorial Center. My youngest son was chosen to participate in representing the Air Force’s “future.” He, along with a National Park Service retired Air Force veteran, and an active duty Air Force honor guardsman, will place the AF wreath on Thursday morning.
I am a proud American. Born in the Territory of Hawaii before it became a State in 1959. Our family has been blessed by and through Dennis Prager’s genuine commitment to use his gifts to benefit any fellow pilgrim in pursuit of the sublime truth. Thank you to all at PragerU and PragerU Kids!
Pray for the peace of Israel and Merry Christmas to all of you!

🇺🇸 we homeschool & take December 7th as a special lesson day. Over the years we have studied the different accounts/aspects of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, from the military recollections to the civilian accounts. We discuss the politics of the day, the state of the war in Europe and around the world, the massive loss of life that we suffered as a nation on that day and throughout WW2. The heroism and sacrifices of our own family members & likewise the respect for their stories and experiences - become our lesson plan. We have learned military tactics, code breaking and radio communication. We have discussed the transition of Hawaii to a state -during and following the War. We learned about the changes that took place in America and within schools, jobs, and the military. My son knows why his great grandfathers served. US Marines & Airforce. ♥️🇺🇸
We do what we can to remember Pearl Harbor.

i am japanese and live in Hawaii with my beautiful daughter and wife. My grandparents were sent to concentration camps and lost their homes. My uncle signed up that week, served in the 100th battalion, my father joined as well. He dud not allow us to speak or learn japanese, it affects us to this day as i am learning the impacts of events decades ago.
lessons learned are valid today… be aware of global events, always be prepared,do not knee jerk when circumstances impact you negatively… think, plan, look ahead for the future of our children, teach them to survive in a hard world even through peacetime.

Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth & the Life. So teaching about the idolatry and violent culture of Japan as well as our own bad policy decisions will illustrate the difference between pure evil and a country that made unrighteous choices.

I think they should at least mention it, and definitely show some pictures.
About a year ago, I was talking to an eighteen year old kid who wasn't sure it even happened. He thought it might have been a government conspiracy, like some people think 9/11 was. This puzzled me, as I've been to the USS Arizona Memorial. I've seen the wreck, and the oil that still leaks from it. I mentioned that, and he was surprised. He didn't know how shallow the harbor was, and thought that the memorial was FLOATING on a patch of deep ocean, over a wreck that may or may not actually be there. 🤦‍♂

They should learn the principal events as they happened.
The Japanese had gone to war in 1931. It was a full 10 years before Pearl Harbor. The US didn't want to get involved in the war. But Japan was transforming into a modern economy and needed resources and materials. So they invaded Manchuria. Then Pearl Harbor happened after the Japanese obtained a copy of General Billy Mitchell's (AAF) assessment of Pacific readiness for combat.
      The rest is history.

How is this even a question? It Happened. It's History. It was even a pivotal moment in not just American History, but world history. I think that maybe we should talk about the context in which it's taught, but it does need to be taught. and by the context in which it's taught, I mean that it wasn't that one event alone that drew us into the war, it was a long string of diplomatic failures, attacks, disagreements, etc., culminating in the Pearl Harbor Surprise Attack. Those other events are important.
When I was in college history, this event was covered, and the professor asked "Was Japan right in bombing Pearl Harbor?" and one student answered "Yes, because the US Dropped two nukes on them." This is what you get for not only not teaching history, but failing to teach it properly brings you.

The real reasons behind Hiroshima and Nagasaki ( how ever you spell them) , how many Japanese civilians were toasted, how many civilians were suffering after the toast , in both cities that is . What did the US government say after they knew how many civilians are kaput > Tell the truth that the united states was involved in WW2 but not publicly. Meaning what ever Horrific attack happened . Might as well add if you want to teach children about the " KKK " about abolishing slavery but keeping the slaves * ironic" teach them about Ota Benga . Teach them how to spot a fake laugh " and we are safe hahahaha " . Teach them about Vietnam , Cuba, others Guantanamo Bay Summer resort . You teaching them about sexuality and how to change so you might wanna teach them something useful .
