Bobby, I’m very impressed with the way you actually sailed in the weather instead of just waiting for slack winds and motoring point to point. Being Captain means being proficient in all conditions and when you have a tremendous boat like this Beneteau Oceanis 60, it can definitely handle it! Your seamanship has improved in leaps and bounds…you seem meant to have a sailboat…one of these big monohulls is such a seaworthy vessel and provides great views for your followers! Well Done! I loved it!
Agreed. Anyone that didn’t enjoy that moderate challenge with a fantastic boat which is made to handle all conditions, may it serve them to realize it’s a privilege and a responsibility to crew for a good captain who knows his and the boats limits. Nice test for you Atlantic or Pacific cross. Real Nice job Bobby, good to se you sailing instead of motoring. Hook ‘Em!
Enjoyed the video!! Was in the Great Lakes one time on a 32 foot power boat in 8 to 10 footers and we rode it out !! Fun but a little scary on that boat!!
@@jefflewis9073 I used to sail my Challenger 35 Ketch on lake Ontario for almost 20 years from April 1st to November 1st as we lived aboard her. She was beautiful in every wind and wave combination. In the really big stuff I just wanted to keep her way far away from a lee shore. Safety was always paramount.
as a professional instructor - and former Principal of a sailing school - you are sadly misguided on the competencies on display here. the yacht wasn't prepared for the sea that well - the novice crew wasn't wearing any form of restraint even though they were knowingly going into gale-force winds. Worse the owners of the yacht would be having a fit - the soft covers should have come down instead of flogging to death. Apparently "Bobby is the brains trust" yet he was not clipped on. that is just a massive fail nor was he wearing the simplest of vests. Moreover - if he happens to be "charging for these trips with the ladies" he falls under commercial rules. If something went south (under those conditions) he would be in a monster world of hurt. - professional indemnity etc, etc. - Couldnt really care what Bobby does with consenting adults - but please don't put him up as a shining light of competency
I don’t argue with the decision to make that passage- Bobby and the boat were clearly capable of handling it and there were other crew that were experienced. What I do take issue with is the apparent failure to use life jackets and lifelines. In the conditions, these were a must, even on a boat of this size.
First thing i noticed to when leaving port. Man overboard in those conditions would have been a big prob !. With that boat i would have loved that sail.
Yes, I agree entirely even Steph said she would grab a cushion if the boat tipped over. But it is not going to tip over but round up and maybe Bobby could have reduced her fears by showing how it rounds up if overpowered. Surprised Booby did not check Windy just before departure because it would have shown the strength of the wind. André in Sydney
I'm really impressed with that boat. Aesthetically pleasing and capable. With your experience and a boat like her there's plenty of room for adventure.
You are so Blessed, a mended heart, so you are able to take on such adrenaline rushes as the Captaining of rougher seas. I know the ladies may live to 100, they will never forget this ride.
Hey Bob, Sailing days like that in high winds gets your blood pumping and reminds you how enjoyable the fair weather sailing is. Plus it's nice to show your crew how good of a sailor you are once in awhile😁 Capt K
Good episode! I can't comment on the appropriateness of the sailing conditions, but I did enjoy seeing the rough seas. Kind of easy to do from my patio in South Florida! 😎
Great video, beautiful boat, beautiful capable crew and a well experienced skipper makes for a fun sail in high winds and the thrill of the power of nature..love it! :-)
im not sure how capable that crew is. Bobby and maybe the other guy having sailed in those sort of conditions b4? but its a pretty safe boat im sure Bobby could have single handed it if required. another story if the wind was on the nose ! ps. u got the forecast right too 👍
@@rhett7716 If the young crew all want to be sailing throughout their lives, then they have to get occasional peaks at difficult conditions, and as you said, wind direction could have been far more challenging, and of course boat could have been smaller as well. Lucky crew, next outing in 30 knot should seem no biggie.
I have to agree with others here that all crew should have life jackets on for a rough sail like this. It's a thrilling sail for sure! Steph was so afraid of these sailing conditions that she wanted to go back to shore.
Absolutely it was the right thing to do and go sailing. Yeah, some of the crew might not have liked it, but you boys had it fully under control and the boat was handling it in its stride without being overpowered. Great sail and great video. Been a long time since we have seen some really good sailing on your channel Bobby, so please keep them coming.
Another well produced video that took us along your journey. It looked like you and your crew handled the winds and seas nicely. The dolphins swimming along the boat was a real treat for the crew. They are amazing how they will come up and swim with the bow of the boat. I did feel bad for Steph. She looked truly scared as the wind picked up and she went down inside. Stay safe and look forward to the next one.
This is one of your best videos ever. Awesome photography! While a camera never does justice to the size of the waves you clearly had the right amount of sail and were under good control at all times. Awesome.
Got your sailing stripes back Bobby and with a mixture of experienced sailers and everyone on board with at least some sea time, a big mono no problem. It was a good experience for your crew to sail in heavy weather and as you say only a few miles apart between islands. Great episode brought back many memories.
Looks like you had a great sail! I have only sailed on fresh water with a 26', and that's as fast as we can go in high winds, heeling over with water splashing into the cockpit. That's what those floor drains are for.
Other than a bit of crew whining 😉, it all seemed good. The dolphins were, as you said, a reward for the adventurous spirit of the sail. That is one beautiful yacht and seemed to handle the challenging conditions well.
I think Flor is the most adventurous. The windier and rougher it gets, the more she smiles. See no reason not to have sailed. Made sense to head for a place with a better forecast. That boat is more than seaworthy for ocean sailing.
Nice day for a sail. I am sure the boat is capable of conditions much worse than you were in. Your crew can now start to call themselves boaters and sailors. Glad they now have this experience to build upon. Great job Bobby.
We were in Mykonos a few years ago and the wind was really unbelievable. You could not keep a hat on your head or stand up straight. You are some brave souls going out in that wind.
Wow that looked like fun, it’s what sailing is about & a great excuse to put the yacht to what it was designed to do, lm sure you really enjoyed the experience Bobby 🇬🇧
I was making 17 years charter with my sailingcata kalamazoo. If weather forecast is more than 25 kts, add another 10 for the real wind coming. If you go up north do it early hours. Retired now, living in Türkiye, but still on the sea.
Ya Bobby you rock!! I started watching your channel because you are a sailor with a sailing boat! To see you back in your element was enjoyable!! Do more like that!!!
Bobby you and the boat handled the conditions beautifully. I think you should definitely do more of. I think some form of a life jacket, at least for the helmsman, should have been used. Maybe not the whole trip, but maybe just the beginning part. I think your next investment ought to be a sailing monohull. You are a true sailor at heart. Cheers!🍻
I like to watch heavy weather sailing ever since I watched S.V. Delos sail the east coast of Africa. I also watch lots of Eric A. Taking the boat out in 40+ knot sea was worthy of a true captain. The video showed that some of the girls got a little worried about the conditions however I believe the Beneteau could handle twice the conditionds.
This is for Seph. The high wind amounts bobby was calling were partly due to the masthead waving back and forth adding wind velocity. Do you think some of your nervousness is caused by a lack of control feeling. I'd like to suggest trying to get a feel for the rhythm of the boat movement. The best way to feel it is to watch the timing of the helm corrections as the boat moves thru the waves. Have you ever noticed that those on the helm never seem to get seasick? Partly because their minds are engaged in keeping the boat on course. Partly because they are using the sensing of the motion of the boat to steer. To the helmsman , downwind it's like surfing ... totally engaged and under control. It's a skill and fun to do toward mastering. Have the guys show you how to do it and you'll want to do it more often, especially to avoid seasickness.
Looks like a very capable boat, go for it... Bobby did look a bit nervous before the turn to Port. Question - are there limits put into the contract with Navigare re sailing conditions?
If the weather reports were wrong, it's not your fault it got rough. I felt so bad for Steph, she was terrified. That's about the roughest conditions I've sailed in on a Louders 33. A very heavy boat and capable. Glad you guys made it.
That looked like fun. My little boat used to heel over like that. With Bobby at the helm, there's nothing to worry about on a boat like that. Exciting video.
Or anywhere else in the Southern Hemisphere low latitudes. Learnt to sail in 25+ knots in waters off Tasmania Australia.....best buzz you can get flying down wind....spinnaker out.......woohoo
Bobby, I think the thing that surprised me most about this trip you are on, is I never realized that the weather and the water were that cold over there. I don't know why but I always thought of the Mediterranean as more of a tropical type of weather and water as far as the temperature went.
Great sailing, refreshing with a lot of wind in the sails, I have sailed a lot around the Greek islands and over to Turkey. Since I live in Norway and have sailed ofen far north in strong wind, I can sign that the wind especially east of the Mediterranean can be very strong and capricious.Very well handled captain Bobby:)
Great to see this. I remember being hit by 45-50 knots for 36 hours crossing from Sardinia to Menorca in the 90s. Didn't have the weather tech back then but a good solid boat and good crew made it a helluva ride. Good to have that experience.
Bobby, congratulations on your decision to head out to sea. Here in the Aegean, the winds (especially the Meltemi) can be very bad and you have to be sure you have the skill - Bobby has that skill as you could see - Proper sailing is not only "fair weather sailing", bad weather is also part of it. The only thing I missed were life jackets, maybe it would have been a little better for the lady crew. It's nice that (after a long time) we were able to experience real sailing again, thanks Bobby.
It was, I thought, a real gutsy move to sail in those very windy conditions, but I believe I'm safe in assuming that you've had a great deal of experience with sailing in these kinds of conditions, because it seemed like you got through it beautifully and confidently. Way to go, Bobby!

It appeared to me that the outcome was never in doubt. Looked like you all handled the weather well. Looked like the boat was well and truly worthy of the waters.
I loved the sail and wish I had been aboard to fully appreciate it. The dolphins are always a treat and I really hoped one would have leapt free of the swell and kissed her hand

Great content and awesome to see you go out in those conditions.. Famous quote.. A FLAT SEA NEVER MADE A SKILLED SAILOR.. Well done for letting the crew experience this.
Having been in similar situation where you leave a marina and sail into weather I appreciate that you reefed well before it got too much. A mono yacht like that can handle a lot more than most crew. Well done. You will need to perhaps be more aware of this type of weather when you get your new cat.
That was exciting. In most cases it's wise not to go out in such strong winds. On the other hand given the three day forecast the conditions were going to get much worse in Mykenos and being in an unprotected harbour can be much worse, so I think you made the right choice. You had three highly experienced sailors on board, a sound sailboat and most of the sailing was downwind, which greatly reduces the speed of the apparent wind. Clearly, where you ended up offered much greater protection in the lee of the island, even for having to anchor outside the harbour. Hopefully you will get a mooring the next day.
Hi Bobby welcome to the MED. This is what you have to be expected in this part of the seas. very nice ride Captain. quote " the most unexpected sea conditions I ever sail in my life, conditions can change drasticly in minutes..." Eric Tabarly. end quote

My most memorable sailing has been 40kts plus, if you get it right. It's hard to forget. It's a bit like "I hope we get in soon" but then it's like "man, how awesome was that!!"
Now that's proper sailing......gettin the rush from speed and wind.....not dangerous at all if ya know what ur doin......down wind is fun in rolling seas.....great job Bobby n crew.......🙂👏👏👏👍❤
She'd have been better to stay up on deck in the fresh air......and to experience all the sensations of high speed sailing.....she'll enjoy it next time........its fun flyin down wind......
57 MPH is pretty rough, but Bobby you handled it very well, How is Megan she seemed to not like it as much. Hobie had us fishing Santee Cooper at 32MPH in kayaks and it was rough. Great job my friend enjoy the adventures.. Be safe and keep floating away.
You are touring the great islands of GR, enjoy the journey, on your question about sailing in that wind, first you are good captain and experienced and showed what sailing means, anyway its called a sailing boat and needs the wind or it will boring slow ride, your crew has learned a lot, thanks to you and keep the good work
With your experience Bobby, I know you would never put your crew at risk. You have a great crew and this video was very exhilarating for one who watches online. Great Job Captain.
Bobby I think for the Average sailor....Nope they should not have gone out but you had Two Experienced sailors switching at the helm...You checked the weather before you left and You made it happen. But it also gave you a feel for the weather with that sail boat so if you see a forecast that is similar or worse maybe next time for safety sake regardless of how good you are at sailing delay the trip if you can. Good job BOYS!!!!! ANd Crew!!!! Great Job Boat......That didn't flinch. Double check on that alternator do not want to lose power or have a battery fire if you make that crossing again!!!!!!! But Boy the Boat handled that like a PRO!!!!!!!!
I was departing Mykonos same day as you. Our airplane was stuck on runway for two hours, waiting for the winds to calm down. I have seen that 32 knots ferry from my hotel window. I was facing south, however I did not see you guys.
Booby and crew thank you for another fantastic video. The yacht and crew are outstanding sure there was a bot of a swell but the vessel made it all seem easy with all the navigational equipment. Cheers Crawford

Great job Bobby and it’s great that you had the extra sailing experience with the other gentleman on board. You make it look so easy.

Sailing in 30 knots is an average spring/summer day in San Francisco.

Sailing when it quickens the blood is always the best. A good captain and capible craft make this video great to watch thanks for sharing.
I liked the music in this one! A little drama makes for some excitement!

🙏🏻Happy all went well with the roughest weather since I’ve bin watching you all glad it’s over now enjoy 👍❤️
Now that's proper sailing......gettin the rush from speed and wind.....not dangerous at all if ya know what ur doin......down wind is fun in rolling seas.....great job Bobby n crew.......🙂👏👏👏👍❤
Fun stuff! I was lucky to surf a 41' monohull in Antigua recently for hours. Good fun. I prefer everyone be tied in in those conditions.
I was sad to see Steph get so spooked, hopefully she will gain confidence! Looked like an exhilarating sail !!😀👍
She'd have been better to stay up on deck in the fresh air......and to experience all the sensations of high speed sailing.....she'll enjoy it next time........its fun flyin down wind......
@@colinvandenhoff6343 Yes!👍
I certainly wouldn't be very happy in that weather, unless I had Bobbie helping us on board. What an impressive vessel. Well donw you all.
Yes Bobby, should of gone out, exciting and showed your level head as boat captain, great episode 🍺👍🍷👌💯
BOBBY THE TRUE PRO !!!! NICE WORK
Hey Bobby, where is your lifejacket/PFD and where is your safety line to keep you in the cockpit and steering the sailboat?
57 MPH is pretty rough, but Bobby you handled it very well, How is Megan she seemed to not like it as much. Hobie had us fishing Santee Cooper at 32MPH in kayaks and it was rough. Great job my friend enjoy the adventures.. Be safe and keep floating away.
Absolutely should be out there, it is good training for unplanned storms
Excellent footage of your sailing super enjoyed it
You are touring the great islands of GR, enjoy the journey, on your question about sailing in that wind, first you are good captain and experienced and showed what sailing means, anyway its called a sailing boat and needs the wind or it will boring slow ride, your crew has learned a lot, thanks to you and keep the good work
With your experience Bobby, I know you would never put your crew at risk. You have a great crew and this video was very exhilarating for one who watches online. Great Job Captain.
Love seeing Bobby back in a monohull, good stuff!!
Whoo hoo what a ride! Great footage. Do it again... Do it again!
Live life to the fullest... would have loved to be on that sail !!!
Sailing is all about experiencing life, not hiding from it. Keep up the great life.
Those winds fine with correct sail plan and good crew 👍🏻 we had those numbers of the west coast of Scotland last winter
Sailing was awesome! Well done.
The sail today looked like a lot of fun flat water you need the motor ..l o l ...love your show
can't sail with out wind .love your adventures
Awesome seeing you handle it so well. Hope the crew is okay.
Awesome sailing and fantastic photography. Thank you.
Loved it, Hard core sailing. Thanks
I was departing Mykonos same day as you. Our airplane was stuck on runway for two hours, waiting for the winds to calm down. I have seen that 32 knots ferry from my hotel window. I was facing south,
however I did not see you guys.
Naxos is such a lovely island. I’m sad u didn’t get to visit! Great skills Bobby! Impressive
Not like you to sail in those conditions Bobby. Glad it went well. Absolutely Stunning scenery! Nice editing.
thats the fun of sailing... had the right boat and people running it. good job
Great to watch the boat in heavy winds and the scary music was good.
Glad you enjoyed it
Booby and crew thank you for another fantastic video. The yacht and crew are outstanding sure there was a bot of a swell but the vessel made it all seem easy with all the navigational equipment. Cheers Crawford
