Love this style of "truck like" tractor. They should do a more compact and affordable version for small farms. Cause alot of times, tractors are just used to pull trailers.
You were right with the Unimogs you showed in the beginning. Those tiny ones with the steep hood are Unimogs 411 and they are one of the first generation form the 50/60's the only have around 30-40is horses, but are strong like you wouldn't believe it. I think I saw them towing nearly 20t. The portal axels and gearbox make it have a lot of power, but then it's really slow, slow but nearly unstoppable. The other ones you showed, with the round bonnet are 406/403's they were build from the 70-90s I think. They are bigger and more powerful with around a 100ish horsepower. Additional to those really classic ones, there were many, many other different models during the years, most of hem even more powerful.
I have driven a Unimog U500 many times and also a U1400 on a few occasions. I prefer the U500, loads of power and much more capable when towing large trailers with a lot of weight on. I would be happy to own a Unimog but not so happy to pay the repair bills when they go wrong!
so do you think the Unimog could do what you do on the farm on a daily basis . ? its a fair bit of kit for sure great video Olly keep up the great work mate . S C UK.
@@williamwalsh2749 of the top of my head I don't know the prices of those new ones, but they older 80-90 models are priced really compatible here in Germany. Their main advantage is just their versatility. For one they are part lorry, meaning even the old ones will do 80kp/h. But because they have many gears, they're also able to drive really slow and are thus really powerful and you can save gas compared to tractors. Another gene, that the unimog inherited from trucks is the comfortable cabine. With the great view up front spacious seeds (especially with the old ones, compared to other tractors of the time). Not forgetting the coil springs making the ride really good. Besides this speed, comfort and towing power it also shines as a work horse paired with implements. As you can see in the video you can have 3 point hitches front and back, Ptos front back and in the middle. Usually they come with the tipping bed, but it can easily be changed to a crane, excavator, spreaders etc, etc. There are endless possibilities. And of course in old mercedes fashion: they are build like a tank. Those new ones you see in the video even have more options than the old ones: The agriculture version can have two power/gear trains: One is a normal gearbox for heavy towing and the other is a hydrostatic drive to drive slow whilst working (I think it goes seemless up to 40ish). One disadvantage they sometimes have is that they have the power to pull heavy implements like plows, but just not always the traction because their tires are not massive compared to other tractors. If you want to see the older ones in action search for Unimog Team fitzen, there you can see them working on a farm.
Hope you enjoyed the video guys! What do we think of the Unimogs?
They were good
Restoring my own 1967 Unimog 421, it is a wonderfull machine
👍 As a boy, the Matchbox Unimog was worth at least three other toy vehicles! Yeah, even including the latest Hot Wheels cars! 😎
I recently sold my Dads Unimog... He had a company called Paddock Maintenance & lived in Suffolk

The Unimog is the best all round ag vehicle out there. The only down side is you do need a professional driver to operate it.
so do you think the Unimog could do what you do on the farm on a daily basis . ?

Can anyone tell me why someone would use one of these rather than a tractor ? What are the advantages / Disadvantages?
William Walsh hill farmers and haulers
They have all the abilities of a lorry/truck, all the normal road traffic speed, plus can do anything a tractor can do..
And very good offroad
What about field work, and price?
