Your comparison confirms my findings also.
Everyone sees DXO Pure Raw 3 (and 2 for that matter) as somehow just a noise reduction application. I think this sells DXO short by a mile. DXO Pure Raw 3 is a demosaicing plug-in and a different way to initially render raw files. It’s ability extract fine detail, apply lens correction and sharpening EVEN AT BASE ISO is better than anything I’ve used, C1, LrC, ACR, etc. It’s just better in all respects. The fact that it’s noise handling is fabulous is just icing on the cake, IMO.
That's true. I use DeepPrimeXD technology for demoseicing and noise reduction on every RAW file, even at base ISO, precisly because the quality it delivers.
Pro raw 3 takes my dated Nikon D200 files and turns them into something that resembles a new camera. Amazing.
This is the comparison I've been waiting for. Thank you. You're always the first. Thank you.
DxO and Topaz are very close, and when that's the case you might find that one works better for some images while the other works better for other images.
Same if you throw ON1 into the mix. Plus these 3 tools leapfrog as to which is the best at any one time. Since ON1 is the oldest, I expect the next update to that product to catchup.
Thank you for that great comparison Anthony. As a Topaz suite owner I've been wondering for awhile if I should spend the time & money to try out Pure Raw. Just watched your comparison on my phone, but will be able to see much better when I view it on my computer later. Simply from what you've said, it doesn't seem like it would be worth the buy in price to switch to PR3 at this point. And I do love the flexibility that Topaz's multiple models gives me when editing many different types of scenes.
I totally agree. DxO Pure Raw 3 is the best one of these four in its processing of raw files. Add to that the camera and lens correction in DxO, which put it over the top.
Topaz Denoise AI is second best in noise control. Paired with other Topaz filters in Photo AI, it does an amazing job in rescuing troublesome images. But I find that the Topaz Photo AI sometimes introduces strange artifacts if not pulled back.
I am now using DxO Pure Raw as my front line raw processor as I believe it does a better job than Lightroom on its own.
Get better soon !!! you are corageous that you are making a video!! Best from Uruguay.
I see some odd lines introduced in the No-Noise Ai, so for me at least, DxO and Topaz are clear winners. Depends on the shot, as sometimes Topaz leaves a very small noise introduction at the pixels of the borders of objects in an image. Thanks for this great comparison! I was waiting for it !!! Best wishes and get better soon!
Thanks for the valuable comparison. I use DxO PureRAW 3, Topaz Denoise AI, and Topaz Photo AI. I would say, about 80% of the time I prefer Denoise AI with Low Light settings, followed by PureRAW 3 without sharpening. I find that the biggest issue with all of the ones I use is the loss of detail in areas where color differences are subtle. They tend to get rid of that subtle detail along with denoising and sharpening. While Low Light, typically does a great job of cleaning up the background, without splotches, it will leave a little noise in those high frequency areas with subtle color differences, not losing the detail. This does not, typically come across as splotches, rather as more detail in specific areas. Yes, I’ve tried the detail slider, on other options, but often end up with splotches in smooth bokeh areas. PureRAW tends to have a noticeable color shift, and their sharpening also whitens up light areas to the point of looking like glare. Especially with the new PureRAW option. I can fix the color casting, but I almost never use their sharpening. I do like their lens corrections, though. Some of this is a matter of taste, for sure. Finally, I especially like the DeNoise AI masking feature and I find Photo AI the worst of the three.
Can't call it between Topaz and DxO and I'd be happy with OnOne too. Only Neo dragging behind, I'm glad I didn't buy that extension.
Great comparison, I hope your Covid goes quickly.
I have to say I'm so glad that you review and edit with so many different programs. Not everyone uses Lightroom, which most YT photographers seem to use.
Thank you and get well soon.
It's a great comparison, Anthony, thank you. The biggest impact is in the blurry background. IMO. In the end when you show us the "unprocessed" raw file, we forget that it is not the "raw" file, but a deBayerised and demosaicked processed version made by Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) and rendered through Lightroom (LrC). As a long term subscriber to Adobe and having bought the Topaz quartet, I opine though that we are looking at failed raw processing by ACR/LrC. If I did not feel I needed Photoshop then I would have stopped buying into Adobe long time ago. Let's face it, the noisy background is well within the camera's dynamic range (*) and what we call "noise" is not about uncertainty in the camera's firmware in the analogue-to-digital conversion of photosite values that are uncertain because of a quantum-physical lack of photons. It is just failed raw processing. Why do we need raw processing? Because of the darned Bayer architecture. Adobe must do loads and loads better with its raw processing.
(*) Dynamic range is meant here differently than the numbers we read everywhere. When we read that a camera has a dynamic range of 15 EV, then this is a number from electrical engineers and marketers that informs us about the range of different illumination levels where we can use a camera. It is like the operating temperature range of a camera. For each individual shot that number is meaningless as long as we are within the operating range.
Individual shots have a much narrower dynamic range that I call "contrast envelope". My recurring rant about noise being failed raw processing and being well within dynamic range must be taken as "well within the single shot contrast envelope".
Another great video Anthony, and as for F2! You learn something every day!
Anthony thanks for doing these comparison video. On my Macbook Air I still think Topaz AI DeNoise is better overall.
Agree with you assessment. Well done and fair comparison. The photo itself is outstanding imag!
I have three programs of the four on test here.
I don't have DXO.
Denoise ai is the best.🙄
On1 is decent and Luminar is absolutely awful.
I use neo quite a bit but always end up doing nr in Topaz ai.
Thanks for an excellent video and I hope you're on the mend real soon 👍
Get well soon. I would have liked to see a comparison between DXO Pure Raw 3 and Topaz Photo AI
Great comparison. Thanks! Get well soon.
Get well soon!🙏
Excellent comparison of these noise removal programs and well worth watching. Lumimar clearly still needs work as not to the same standard as the others. All the rest are very close when enlarged and in the normal views hard to tell the difference. Different images may behave differently, so you pays your money and takes your choice.
It would be Topaz denoise Ai for me, thanks Anthony for the video.
Thanks for a great review. Glad to see you include DenoiseAI rather than PhotoAI. Despite a good start (to PhotoAI), I have found the results from recent updates to be unusable.
For me, it is TOPAZ's Denoise AI in first place with PureRAW3 very close second.
Thanks much for this eval. With so many options (variables) in play for each app, hard to decide. To the experienced PureRaw users out there, I assume in the Lightroom Dev module, if lens profile correction was specified in PureRaw, then the lens profile correction in LR should be unchecked, is that right? Why does the denoised PureRaw image end up slightly darker after running the app? Thanks.
Hi Anthony. My thanks for all you do, my friend. A question: Do you intend to compare DXO PR3 with Topaz PhotoAI? I think that would be an important one. Again, thanks.
I will still take Denoise AI over all of them. It has many more options. The NEO version I also have does not always do the job, but is adequate in some situations. I will not buy PureRaw3 because it is just not that much better than Topaz. But I am not perfect anyway!
Anthony could you comment and show how you would use your workflow if ON1 is your main content editor, but I also use Photoshop and luminar. My question is I would like to interchange my image with all these programs without getting out of ON1, is this possible or do I have to make LRC my main editor?
Funny how you can use 2 Luminar product's yet don't mention that instead of spending quite a large amount for DXO Pure Raw 3 you can purchase On1 photo Raw 2023 that then saves again because you don't then need Lightroom and have a very good denoising option built in and also continue a Raw file workflow.
DxO PureRaw 3 and Topaz DeNoise AI are close. As A H says below, it may be that each works better for different images. I don't shoot wildlife, so would have to get a DxO trial if I wanted to make my own comparison.
Is there a reason why you used DeNoise AI rather than Photo AI for this comparison? Photo AI does return DNG to Lightroom Classic when used as a Lightroom plugin.
Great video....get well soon!
I only use PureRaw3 and Topaz Denoise AI and Topaz Photo AI but I could not agree more with your findings.
Wow! What timing for covid! Even I had avoided covid all these days and then bam! Got slammed.
Apart from the results, I think the inability of Denoise AI to render a DNG file when used as a plugin would make me choose NoNoise AI or PureRaw3. And the fact that NoNoise AI has the option of fixing noise and sharpness simultaneously gives it extra points.
DxO is probably better than Topaz or On1... but it will only works with Raw files and not everyone, some Fuji cameras, some old Minolta cameras and more are not, even if converted to Dng. So for people with old Jpgs, tiffs, from long ago, it's not even an option, we have to use Topaz Photo AI or the ON1 apps. If DxO could somehow acknowledge this and make an option for PureRaw3 to also accept non-Raw files, of course with a different model, that would be awesome. But for the time being perhaps the On1 offering is an all around better proposition, and very easy yo integrate in an LrC or CO1 workflow.
Pure Raw is the best, Denoise AI has options but they are just there to be confusing. Pure Raw does it right the first time without having to fiddle around waiting for rendering everytime you try to get the best image in Denoise Ai. After all that it still doesnt do as good as Pure Raw 3.
Pure Raw3 looks slightly better than On1 No Noise or Topaz Labs Denoise AI. I use Topaz Denoise AI and hope that it will be able to render a DNG file when used as a plug-in with a future update.
Wishing you a speedy recovery!
Nice comparison , pure raw 3 only works on raw .No noise ai is included in on 1 photo raw 2023, Denoise is cheaper and better option.
Interestingbtheatvyoubused DeNoise Ai vs the new Photo Ai. Im not sure I like Photo Ai as much as it does not clean as well as DeNoise.
As for PureRaw3, it's really good at restoring the image (regardless of iso) but I find it to create artifacts on faces. On landscapes, it works really well.
In my opinion DXo 3 is best ,Topaz a close second followed by ON1 with luminar Neo the worst by a long way .
Take care of yourself. It sure seems like there is another uptick in Covid right now. I keep hearing of positive tests all over the place
BTW I'm a DeNoise fan, myself.
Your conclusion is ok. DxO is superior at the moment. Topaz Photo AI is way behind AI wise.
Battle RAWyal 🙃
Get well soon.
I believe that Denoise AI is clearly the best choice for professionals in that there is so much more control over the output compared to others. I like DXO but feel that it is heavy handed with the sharpening and there is now way to adjust it. Take Care!!!!!
You can turn off sharpening
Topaz DeNoise AI is best in my opinion.
I had covid last year, I have to say it was the best cold I've ever had. 3 days.
To date, I am disappointed in On1. The only advantage it has over Lightroom is layers. Beyond that, not as good as LR.
Depends what you need. ON1 has some great masking tools and many of the effects are useful. It is also has a very fast editing workflow.
Natural immunity is best!
Too slow and boting
