    Merci beaucoup, Pascal! That's exactly the video I was looking for. It's great that you explained not only the form but when to use this tense in comparison with the other tenses in English and in French. I'm going to take notes and watch more of your videos. I'm a beginner in French and aren't studying with a tutor at the moment, so your channel is a real treasure for me.

    Très bien fait, Pascal. Merci beaucoup!
    I have a few observations and questions that may help beginning students. First, regarding "tu" v. "vous." The rule I learned almost 40 years ago is that "vous" in the singular is used to address anyone over the age of about 12, especially a member of the opposite sex, while "tu" is used not only for close friends and family members, but also to address young children (under 12), animals, and in prayer. Is that still the rule in French?
    Also, the Internet seems to have relaxed the usage rule somewhat, to the point that I almost instinctively want to "tutoyer" someone I whom would normally address with "vous" according to the above rule. How do the French feel about that practice? Does it offend you when strangers address you as "tu" here or elsewhere on the Internet?
    Finally, I think it should be pointed out to beginning students that the simple Present is really the ONLY way to say "he is singing" or "I am speaking." The true continuous (or progressive) tenses simply don't exist in French and never did. "Il est chantant," for example, doesn't work because there is no such construction in French, and it would be extremely bad French for a beginning student to say it that way.
    Just my deux centimes! :)

      Learn French with Pascal Merci encore, Pascal, but it doesn't quite answer my specific questions. At what point do you address a young person as "vous" rather than "tu"? It would sound as ridiculous to address a 17-year-old as "tu" as it would be to address a six-year-old as "vous" unless you were either related to the 17-year-old or else considerably older or in a position of authority over him/her.
      And as I noted, the Internet seems to be eroding the rule to some degree -- I see adults who would normally address one another as "vous" in person address one another as "tu" online or on UA-cam, and I was wondering what the French think about that from a cultural perspective. For example, as my online French instructor, you are entitled to have your students address you as "vous," but some of us would probably address you as "tu" simply because the Internet seems to foster a somewhat informal atmosphere that renders age and social position irrelevant. I was just curious as to your personal take on it as a Frenchman who would have been raised with the "old-school" rule. How do YOU prefer to be addressed on here?

    • @Frenchspanishonline
      @Frenchspanishonline  9 років тому +1

      +Lee Cox sure to a child you will say tu, but with a king's son youwill say vous, you can say tu to a colleague, even if you dont know hom, but with your teacher, vous is better
