This video gives a lot of food for thought in exciting the desire to visit lots of places at a time when so many restrictions and difficulties are in place. Ah well, I'll just add them to my growing list, and hold on to the thought that it is cheaper to travel in the mind (and the internet).

What a shame that this talk was so sparsely attended. I tried to book a ticket, but was told that the event had sold out, which is clearly not the case.
I know the two views from the Manchester City Art Gallery well, and I was delighted to see all the paintings together. Much as I like Caneletto, in many ways his nephew Bellotto surpassed his teacher. He certainly deserves to be better appreciated.

Hi Peter, the Theatre is currently operating at 50% capacity to allow for social distancing, meaning that we were at capacity. We're glad you were able to watch online and we hope to see you back in the theatre soon. Thanks

Thank you for this talk and posting. Bellotto’s painting is astonishing. I’d not been aware of this group and appreciate being made aware, and hearing more background. Well done!

For those of us brought up to consider his uncle’s work as the acme of 18th-century view painting , Bellotto’s paintings can be something of a mystery. Evidently an artist of immense ability, his work yet possesses a truly distinctive quality which, however immediately it strikes the eye, can be hard to pin down in language. Perhaps it can be described as a sense of place. Canaletto shows us buildings beautifully lit and composed, yet there is not the powerful sense of ‘being there’ that Bellotto evokes. Of all his paintings, perhaps only Canaletto’s ‘Stonemason’s Yard’ possesses that powerful sense of the ‘genius loci’ that Bellotto is able to evoke. Canaletto is wonderful, but Bellotto is magical.
