On September 25, 2020, in the middle of the global pandemic, The Ocean released their 9th studio album Phanerozoic II, the concluding episode of a conceptual trilogy that began with Precambrian 13 years before - and even without any touring to support the new album release, Phanerozoic II entered the official German album charts at #9. With no end of lockdowns in sight, the band decided to thank their fans for the support with two streaming concerts, performing both Phanerozoic albums in their entirety: Phanerozoic I was streamed live from Pier 2, a big hall in the port of Bremen, on March 25, 2021. With more than 1.500 tickets sold, it was the most successful show of the popular “Club 100″ streaming events series thus far. The day after this event, the band retreated to synth player and sound designer Peter Voigtmann’s rural studio “Die Mühle”, just outside of Bremen. Here, the band rehearsed and recorded Phanerozoic II in its entirety during the following three days. The performance aired on April 16 as part of the digital edition of Roadburn Festival, this year abtly named Roadburn Redux. Both shows couldn’t have been more different: where the first part boasts with a pompous, mesmerizing lighting production on a big stage, the 2nd part is quite the opposite: intimate, almost cosy, focused on musicianship rather than performance. A stripped down setup in a dark barn, with moody, minimal but not any less efficient lighting. “We wanted to give people two totally different experiences“, says band leader Robin Staps. “In Bremen, we had the chance to record a proper Ocean live show, the way people know us. We played facing towards the front of the stage, to an invisible crowd, essentially to a huge empty room… but we knew people were watching, even if we didn’t see them. There was the same rush of adrenaline right before going on stage as you get before going on at any big open air festival… maybe with a little extra anxiety added, because knowing that so many people are watching you without being able to see them yourself was super weird.“
Phanerozoic albums are two of the best Metal albums of the last years.
Pelagial is a masterpiece too
@@henrywalton5967 Pelagial is in a class of its own as a metal concept album. Never heard anything as cohesive and well composed as it.
Big credits Jonas Renkse for the guest vocals, perfect fit for the songs.
D' accordo ! 🤟🤟🤟👋
@@Dogfood130 Although I will whine a little bit, went to see them play in the same show as Katatonia and Jonas didn't come out for his parts... no idea what the reasoning was O_o
0:00 - The Cambrian Explosion
1:47 - Cambrian II: Eternal Recurrence
9:36 - Ordovicium: The Glaciation of Gondwana
15:55 - Silurian: The Age of Sea Scorpions
26:11 - Devonian: Nascent
37:38 - The Carboniferous Rainforest Collapse
41:35 - Permian: The Great Dying
Thank you
Permian: The Great Dying is one of the most beautiful songs I've discovered in a long time! Awesome
I really wanna give a shoutout to Mattias. People don't often appreciate what the bass does for the tone of the band, but listing to this record live here and on Spotify, Mattias' tone on bass really gives the bands growl a warmth to it that not a lot of other metal bands have. He's present in the mix, he doesn't just bleed into the mix like so many metal bassists do. I really like the fact that he's playing a 4 string Fender. It helps shape the overall sound of the band and makes them stand out to me. Really proves how Leo Fender got it right the first time I guess.
Great playing and tone Mattias!
as a bassist i second this. His grooves are utterly disgusting (in a good way :)) and he sits perfectly in the mix. whoever mixes them is a genius.
I think he really shines in Triassic, the intro groove is killer!
I can't wait to hear it Live. The build up with the Bass on Devonian: Nascent is my favorite part of the song.
Do you know which amp he´s using? He doesn´t seem to be playing thru one of the Kemper amps, does he?
just as a I read this comment, "the great dying" started playing. I could not agree more.
I totally agree, am not a musician so the way I feel it is that the ocean have a lot of strong ‘ambiance’ and a setting where their songs lay in instead of the song just happening in your face sort to speak and for such a style, the bass plays a big part in setting the stage that the song happens, unfolds in
And what a stage it is
This band is infinitely grand, just like the ocean they name themselves after. A must have.
I thought the studio album was amazing but this just takes it to a whole new level. Somehow each album just managed to get better and better. Keep killing it guys!
Honoured to have opened for them when they toured India way back in 2019. We were thrilled by the powerful performance they had put up and now seeing this live set made me smile in reminiscence 🖤
What's the name of your band? Still jamming together?
@@Z-bone64 we call ourself Maximal. Playing my last gig with the band on 4th March. Thankyou for asking Vincent
I’m loving the audible bass. I honestly wish more bands would do this.
i definitely sure their ideas and sound mostly borrowed from Tool band
they have nothing in common with tool. Huge Tool fan, but i don't think The Ocean are influenced by Tool. Not every metal song that have good bass riffs is influenced by Tool.
@@user-ue4vh6fi6r
ZzzzzzzTool
@@user-ue4vh6fi6r This band are way more interesting than Tool
This is a really good band, and I am just now discovering them. You guys have got yourselves a new fan. 🤘🏾🤘🏾
Been a fan for years, check out their older stuff too!
@@lisao6928
Oh, I most definitely will check out the older stuff after hearing this, that's for sure!
@@Imadeyourun I started around anthropocentric, Which is amazing. I think pelagial may be my fav though.
@@lisao6928
Awesome! I think I'll check those two out first.
Pelagial is a masterpiece….
С большим удовольствием посмотрели, ждем вас снова в Москве 🤘
Seeing you with great pleasure, it would be more pleasure to see you in Moscow one more time 🖤🙃
I discovered this band when they released Pelagial and they have easily been one of my favorites since. All of their music feels as though I'm taking a journey and I love it
I just now found this band. Definitely has a storytelling vibe that takes you on an emotional ride. Same way I feel about TOOL.
Greetings from Brazil, this band is beyond phenomenal, and both albums are true masterpieces!
You mean all nine albums are true masterpieces ;).
You can't forget Pelagial, it's a masterpeice 😭😭😭
BORA NO SHOW PORRA 28/12 LEK
@@believe07 Queria muito! Moro em SC, longe pacas. :(
This and the Phanerozoic II Live shows have been playing on repeat in my apartment ever since they were released last year... Cant Fucking Wait for more music !!!
I discovered this band just a few days ago. I'm blown away. This is unreal. And besides, production/mix is stellar. How on earth can this be live?
I've been listening to them for over 4 years after a buddy of mine told me about them. They were an hour from me playing live Thursday and I got to go. There is no production going on to this video. This is 100% how they sound live. Absolutely incredible.
I was lucky to see theseguys live, they opened for Opeth along with Cynic.
Great show!!!
That sounds like an awesome lineup.
@@canuck5896 Yeah it was really cool, and I can still remember a lot from that show. I like your Username btw.
@@apathtrampledbydeer8446 thanks
I found this band because I am a Jonas Renske junkie.
I found Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic and Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic - Jonas is on both of those records.
Then, the algorithm popped this full set in my feed today.
Thanks for all the work put into everything you guys do, means a lot to me.
Can't wait to experience this moment, in a cycle, for ever and ever, backwards and forwards.
Shivers every time I hear The Great Dying. It completely changes your view of that entire era
Agreed. The Great Dying is so interesting as a chapter in Earths History, but the song gives the era life. A way to view it while 95% dissapeared at the time.
Went to a concert in Nashville last week not expecting that you guys were going to put on a better show than the band I was there to see, and you did that. You have yourself a forever fan. David's energy is unmatched too. Keep up the excellent work.
My favorite album from my favorite band.
This rules. Cheers from Canada
The US needs a tour please. Best band no one knows…..
Saw these guys in Fresno, Ca with my buddy Dave. Bad ass show and the guys were awesome hanging with the fans. I was right up front. Best show ever.
Looking forward to seeing this live someday soon! 🙏 🤘🤍🇨🇦
Stellar performance, just like part II. I saw you guys in Monterrey, Mexico a week ago...great you could swing by. I really enjoyed it, awesome sound and visuals! Great interaction with the crowd! Obviously left us wanting for more!
Besides a great show it is, Devonian really shines on this.
True Artists. Saw these guys finally last year in Washington DC. They totally exceeded my expectations!!
Amazing.
Incredible music and brilliant work! Phanerozoic I is my most favorite album. Now I know how you play it. Thanks for this opportunity!
Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks for this!
This was amazing the first time! And still is! Thanks for the upload!
Really good show. Thank you!

Одна из не многих групп, чьи лайвы звучат лучше студийных.

Una banda impresionante!!!
this is perfection at it's magnificent point
this was the best damn livestream of the pandemic (so far) 🇨🇦🤘
JUST MESMERIZED
by this band
Scary how Loïc can sound so much like Jonas during Jonas's parts in Devonian. If I didn't have the video I don't think I could have told. Or are they playing Jonas from tape and Loïc is harmonising?
the most beautiful album of the year.
Progresszív metal-Profi szinten-QURVA JÓ!!!!!!!
Guys thank you SO MUCH for uploading! You're the best.
What a badass quality!
Been listening to this and the Roadburn show back to back for days now. They're better than the albums.
So good
You should be able to force the State itself to prosecute youtube for inserting a single 5second ad interrupting this experience, let alone multiple longer ones!
amazing
28:12!!!!!!!! LOVE IT
Благодарю
Saludos 🇲🇽 atodos
Best Live on YT - The most undisputed for me now.
I seriously can't ge over that build up from Cambrian Explosion into Eternal Recurrence, It sounds SO GOD DAMN GOOD! Just the peaceful and smooth instruments slowly building up and that damn explosion as Cambrian II opens up, good god. Robin and the others who are involved, you are god damn geniuses!
You’ve surpassed Tool as my favorite band. I need to get tickets for when you come to the USA!
The Ocean is Tool for atheists
Both are my favorite
@@randomavenger3048 I think Tool fans are usually atheists anyway.

So fucking good. Tranquillity, gut punching riffs, that voice, rumbling bass and the drums are out of this world. Love your music, greetings from hessen, germany:)

Too bad I missed this...
Could have even been there in person if it had been possible!
But nice that I got the possibility to meet them at Hellseatic!

I was a fucking moron when I skipped the concert in Budapest. I swear I'm going next time when I have the opportunity. This is incredible.
Silurian: la era del mar de escorpiones es una maldita joya!!
Fucking hell, these guys destroyed it!
NOW THIS IS CHRISTMAS
ORLANDO MARCH 15TH WOO!!!
Fucking finally.
You guys have become my favorite band in the last two months since this was posted. It flows so well reminds me of Gojira at parts and at other parts like Opeth perfect balance in my opinion. I've heard all the old stuff and I can honestly say this is my favorite discoveries on UA-cam so far besides Early Fallujah. Thank you Metal Blade and The Ocean as well for such a Stellar Performance. So Flawless sounds better Live than Studio and that is Amazing.
It’s literally perfect for me! ima huge deathcore fan and opeth and gojira fan and they are just a blend of all of it
Has a fair touch of Cult Of Luna with Julie Christmas also, what do you think?
such a great fucking band!
Ouch ! C'est transcendant !
I saw these guys supporting Karnivool recently,, wow what an impression you left.. your pretty f**kin amazin!!!
How can you sound so good ?
This Silurian version is a huge travell. WOW.
Nascent by The Ocean: Perfection... Nascent by The Ocean ft Jonas: Sublime, Ethereal, the ultimate prog song
the bends metal sickness, holy diver of darkness, forsaken madness. 🕳☀
Just a quick and loving shoutout to Loic's vocal chords. The results are amazing but what torture :).
Dude is freaking nuts and I love it
yeah that man has a great scream! so raw and aggressive, but not distracting or overly tiring to listen to
His screams sound healthy and he doesn't seem to show any tension when he screams, which tells he's probably doing proper screaming technique which can definitely be tiring and demands good breath control, but doesn't put any harmful strain on your vocal chords at all. When you learn how to scream correctly you actually notice that a lot of the time, the more relaxed you are the easier it is to produce good screams. And it doesn't hurt your throat at all, like, not in the slightest. You can do it all day and you will be tired, just as tired as if you were clean singing, but not tasting blood or with a sore throat or anything like that.
@@ElGnomistico well, I got 15 years as a metalcore vocalist including professional training under my belt and happen to not miss the veins popping out when he screams ;). It is not healthy and he almost quit the band some years ago because of the constant strain, esp on tour. Pelagial after all was initially intended to be an instrumental album for that very reason. But now they are using Paul and Robin as well for support with clean and distorted vocals so...much better balance and of course much healthier for any tour.
@@ElGnomistico also that it does not hurt your throat at all is wrong. No matter how well your technique, you have to do additional pre and post show exercises to avoid long term damage.
Why is the bassist excluded from being seen? Love the bassist for this band!!!
COME TO BRAZIIIIIIIIIIIIIL PORRAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Are they using a lighting technician in this set? They usually do lighting programmatically as far as I knew. So awesome though
and they say perfection doesn't exist...
Pity the wrong image interlacing on one of the cameras, but still great concert.
Also love ISIS / Cult of Luna
pourquoi c 'est pas sur la page de Pelagic ?
excellent show
I’ve obviously been missing out. I like these guys better than Mastodon.
