    I became a plumbing apprentice 5 months ago and the problem with the plumbing industry is that many people are uneducated in how to work on their own plumbing systems. Many companies that do professional plumbing have slowly evolved over the years into organizations that are focused on getting as many high ticket sales as possible-instead of just trying to fix someone’s problems.

    I know plumbing and when you see that, it's always a sign of a crack. I would have tried to tighten it though to see if the whatever seal around the threads wore out. Most plumbers are scammers though. It's too hard for them to pass up an easy grand. I'm far from a expert but I know how to do almost all the plumbing in the average house. A plumber wanted to charge me 1100 dollars to replace a water heater. He said it would take all day! I was going to school and wearing nice clothes probably thought I was a teacher or something, I rehab homes. I bought the same water heater he would use for 220.00 everything fit except the supply line which took 20 min. to fix took me about 3 hours including buying the thing! Never ever will I trust another "tradesman"

  • @papashaq1
    @papashaq1 9 років тому +16

    I have a major problem with this sting operation. By doing what they are doing, loosening the supply lines, they are allowing water to run into the water heater. This makes all the insulation between the outer shell and the tank wet, (models with fiberglass insulation). They are also allowing water to come in contact with the electrical components of the heater. as well as holding moisture against the untreated outside of the tank. (on both fiberglass and foam insulated heater). All this is going to cause problems down the line...and yes including possible explosion...not a fiery explosion and I doubt it would take down part of the garage, but an explosion non the less. Not to mention that when the tech comes to the unit to diagnose there will be noticeable water signs on the inside bottom the unit, usually a tell tale sign of tank failure. With them loosening the supply and allowing water to run through the inside of the heater it makes an accurate diagnosis almost impossible. If I was called to this job I would have tightened the connection, informed the homeowner what I found, and would suggest a replacement also, because of the damage done due to the water infiltration and not being able to diagnose if the tank has failed or not. I feel I would not be doing my job if I didn't suggest the new tank, there is just not enough airflow through the inside of the unit dry the moisture in time without causing damage. In my mind the techs that did not suggest a replacement are the bad techs. I do realize the techs in this feature are not shown to be doing any kind of diagnoses past seeing the loose connection, but did we see the whole story or what dateline wanted us to see. I would not push that the unit be replaced, but I would definitely suggest it, this story with this particular set up, is almost designed to guarantee that they can make a tech look dishonest for their story, and in my mind ruin this water heater.

I was a nice guy in the past, only to have the water heater let go a week later, me receiving a phone call from a pissed off client who response was why did you not replace it when you were here, plus all the water damage. Water tanks won't explode. Water is incompressible and will release it's pressure after the first drop comes out of the tank. After that it just flows out of the tank under the water line pressure... no more violent than from a garden hose sprayer.

    Okay, i'm gonna play the devils advocate here for a second. Why would a fitting suddenly come loose? As a plumber walking into a situation like that and water has suddenly started to leak from a water heater it's safe to assume that the tank is leaking. The tank in these units is completely sealed and the only two opening are the two fittings at the top. Fitting don't just loosen up on their own and I've never, ever heard of one loosing up any way other than with a wrench. These plumbers might actually be scumbags, but this particular scenario was a poor way of rooting them out.
    They should have let them bring a new water heater out and when the guys went to remove the fittings they might have discovered that one was loose and fixed their mistake.

    • @jameskim8574

      Nick Fotopoulos I think there would be better ways of setting plumbers up but those plumbers that are shown should know that those supply lines have a washer that gets worn, and in plumbing thats a very common problem, tightening it would be the first diagnosis, and even if they legitimately thought the tank was leaking, they need to check warranty to see if manufacturer covers it. And water heater exploding part lol, if its already seeping its not going to explode, theres multiple factors for the plumber to know that, one they need to first check how much pressure is in the home, most homes with 60-80 PSI won't have a exploding water heater issue, theres much more complicated factors that take place for that to happen. Either they are dumb plumbers or legit crooked and I'm leaning toward legit crooked.

    • @NickFotopoulos
      @NickFotopoulos 9 років тому

      ***** Yea but the galvanize part is on the water heater. If that corrodes then the solution is a new water heater. I still contend that it's perfectly reasonable to assume that a new water heater is needed. The fittings would only be loose if someone intentionally loosened them, and that only happens when your on a Chris Hanson show. I think their "expert plummer" should have come up with a better test for these guys...

    • @SJoelKatz
      @SJoelKatz 9 років тому +2

      Nick Fotopoulos It happened to me about three years ago. My wife told me there was a puddle of water in our garage. I looked, and found that very same nut loose on our hot water heater. I'm not sure why it became loose, but it did. And while I'm not a plumber, I do know that the first thing you do when you see a leak is try to figure out where the water came from. You can't just assume it's the heater.

    • @Yairsuperlolattack
      @Yairsuperlolattack 9 років тому +2

      Nick Fotopoulos The thing is though, none of those plumbers even took the time to look at the water heater. They walked in and started talking on their phones or just hanging out with each other until they felt they killed enough time and could walk back in and steal a great deal of easy money.

    This happens everyday, Make no mistake about it, Everyone should run a check on every service technician working for a repair company to verify how many people in there company are actually licensed by the state, you would be shocked how many companies even larger ones have only one licensed plumber within the whole company and a lot of the time that licensed plumber is the one sitting in an office while all the non licensed workers are the one coming to fix your pipes!

Well im in HVAC but i knew a couple plumbers and that turned me on to this episode witch just confirmed what i had already figured out. He told us in one of his B.S. meetings whenever the customer ask for the price just tell them "For what i do I'm the cheapest in the valley" still makes me laugh. Some how the video got around and he was gone.

    A licensed plumber at a legit company should replace the water flex. We can not show up to a job and tighten a nut that has already shown that it has failed. It's call liability. The guys on the show were scammers and give us all a bad name.

    • @firippumartinezu1782
      @firippumartinezu1782 6 років тому +1

      I think he's saying a licensed plumber would naturally assume the nut failed if you showed up to a water heater with a sudden leak. He'd have replaced the whole hose piece, rather than tightening the nut, just to be absolutely sure they fixed the problem.

    • @monkeyfeed908
      @monkeyfeed908 6 років тому +3

      Yeah, they might do that and that would be reasonable. But you know whats not reasonable? Buying an entirely new water heater for 800$ bcuz a nut came loose.

  • @mythicalrizz

    Well there was no plumbing tape on the bolt..So even tightened its not a good job cause it wouldn't fully help secure against leaks.. Also no drip pan on the bottom so there wouldn't be water on the floor like there is on the video.. That install was still poorly done, and not professional.
