    I agree that fast fashion isn't as environmentally friendly or ethical as clothes that are made to be but the latter is so expensive. I'm a student and broke AF so even while I buy "fast fashion" clothing, I only buy what I need and try things on in store. Often I'll think about it for a few days or weeks after to make sure I'm still really into it. All of my clothes from H&M and stores like that are pieces I love and wear again and again. That's how I try to do my part in taking into consideration my consumption as a broke AF student :p

      Do you have a local thrift store/charity shop? I know some places do not have good options for buying second-hand items but it's a good budget-friendly way to shop ethically. :)

      Ayoo. Student too. I notice when Express, Macy's, or the Gap have sales their stuff is reasonably priced. Sure they might be $10 more but that's not bad since it's like $10 more quality. Also for basics I just buy packs on Amazon.

      I used to think so too. Just bought 2 awesome tops for 17 Euros (I live in Germany) from an ethical brand. They are absolutely perfect and will last much longer than the fast fashion ones I used to have while not being much more expensive. Ethical fashion can be affordable, you just have to really want to try it.

    Hi Alix, I never usually comment on videos, even though I've been watching yours regularly for years. I'm very very happy that you mentioned that you are willing to rethink your approach to fast fashion. Especially in your role as a UA-camr who inspires so many people it would be very refreshing and interesting to see more content on slow(er) fashion pieces and the brands behind them. Excited to see what's coming up! Cheers, Emma

    it's great to see you actually getting rid of so much stuff! I feel like the low price of fast fashion items often makes me ignore bad fit/ quality and I need to be more selective when in fast fashion stores in order to only buy those perfect pieces. And on the other hand, good quality things are often worth investing a bit more. I feel like if you go shopping with the idea of only going to buy those three must haves, you're gonna end up with a well sorted out, decluttered wardrobe!

      This is why my shopping philosophy is that id rather spend $250 on 1 coat that I will wear for years than $250 on 5 coats that I'll wear twice

    • @5BabyAlien5
      @5BabyAlien5 7 років тому +16

      I'm not in a position where I can spend $250 on one clothing item. But I've worn my "cheap" clothes for year and they still look absolutely fine.However I feel like a lot of times people make excuses when it comes to cheap clothing, like "the fit isn't perfect but it's on sale for $5, so I might as well buy it". I only buy clothing I'm 100% satisfied with, if there's just one thing that botheres me, I'll leave the store without it.

    • @quixotic7460
      @quixotic7460 7 років тому +4

      I totally understand. I used to do the same, but now Im just prioritizing quality over quantity. For the last few years I've gone for a more minimalist wardrobe. I also had to keep telling my family to stop buying me clothes on birthdays and Christmas, because i'd rather buy my own stuff that i'm 100% satisfied with.
      And to be honest I only spent $250 on a coat once, and it was something I was completely in love with and debated buying it for a year lol. It's my favorite coat of all time though. I don't think i'd do it again unless I find another "favorite coat of all time", which doesnt seem likely at least for a good few years.

    The topic of fast fashion v ethical fashion brands is new to me but so interesting! I have been doing a capsule wardrobe for over a year now and it has taught me how much waste I used to have and the benefits of buying only well made (hopefully ethically made with sustainable materials) clothing that I actually need in my wardrobe.

    I found the best way to cut down on fast fashion and quick purchases (not that my wardrobe in ANY way is large, seriously...) was to really decided and hone in on what suits my body and what I feel comfortable in and discard ALL items that didn't meet that criteria. I did the same with colour and prints. These days if I see something amazing but know the cut won't suit me or the colour isn't my cup of tea I let it go. I also abide by the one in one out principle a lot of the time.

    Very wise thought - "I was in love with the idea of it." That is one of my major flaws also- I see something on someone and it is so PERFECT a look for him/her, that I want it desperately - forgetting the simple fact that I AM NOT that person and I will probably look a fool in it.

    I'm currently preparing for a cross-country move so I have been *loving* watching declutter videos lately, yours included! I'm very much like you in that I get sentimental about things and it can be really hard to let certain things go...so the fact that I will have limited packing space for my move is definitely helping, haha. It's a good gut-check too in terms of your buying habits, seeing what you buy too many of, what you've forgotten about, that sort of thing. Anyway, I'd love to see a makeup declutter too, Alex! :)

    A little tip to fit the shoes on shelves.... Alternate between putting the heel and the toe in towards the back of the shelves.. Like Left shoe = toe in, right shoe = heel in... They fit so much easier that way...

    I really enjoy these type of videos from you Alix! I love how your style is so individual-- it's refreshing to see different pieces! I started moving away from fast fashion about a year ago after pretty much exclusively shopping at Forever21 for most of my clothes shopping life. I think it's definitely a process, but it's rewarding to end up with nicer pieces that I love that accumulate over time. :) I'd love to see more style/wardrobe videos in the future!

    I'm passionate about clothes and as much as I love something new I like to know that the cost per wear represents good value for money. I like to have some key pieces that see me through most occasions: trench coat, jeans, white shirt, black dresses etc.... I did buy a pink jacket as pink trend seems to be hanging around and am so pleased.

    Some tips that have helped me a lot (I was quite a hoarder of clothes btw) was to avoid any retail stores like the plague, focusing on pieces that will be considered timeless years from now. Also, something that helps is storing away items that are sometimes end up in the "maybe pile" and when you sort through that pile again a couple weeks later, really do pay attention whether or not you cared for the item and if it never crossed your mind or you can't envision that piece into at least 3 outfits, it is time to part. Hope this helps☺💖

    Consignment shops are so picky about items they'll take ,making it difficult sometimes to sell stuff. You have stuff with tags on it which they would take in a heartbeat. Perhaps you need to just really think before you buy. Save the money and put it towards a long term goal more worthwhile then another coat you don't need.

    For me, when I was younger (please understand I'm only 35, I'm referring to late teens/early 20s), I always wanted the "fast fashion" until my mom taught me that you need to think about quality vs quantity. She also said the best "fast fashion" to get accessories, b/c as soon as they go out of style, you are not out of a lot of money.
    Side Note: I totally get the coat and sweater/jumper thing. I grew up in Western New York state, and it's always cold. When I moved to Atlanta, GA I brought it all with me. I'm slowly going through everything. If it looks old or doesn't fit it goes.
    Good luck with going quality over quantity.
    ***PS in the US they have clothing and shoe recycling. They take shoes like the animal print booties with the chewed up heel, and recycle them into something else. It might be something to look up encase the puppy does something like that again.

I think it's such a shame that most youtubers buy so many clothes all the time to do hauls etc , they get send so much stuff aswell , when you think about it , all the packaging , delivery costs etc etc really adds up.. I think we should all try to minimize our waste and consumption of fast fashion and other products that we don't really need :-)

    Interesting how you mentioned fast fashion cause it really got me thinking. when i see something i want to buy i always rethink it many times efore i buy it i never buy it asap cause i know i will regret it
    this helps me, and prevents me from buying things i dont need or dont really like.
    on the other hand i do believe that we only live once and our youth is passing right in front of our eyes. there are fancy clothes i wont wear when i will be 40 years old so i buy some fancier clothesi like to make the most wear out of them.
    and last but not least i like to invest as much as i can to more expensive items like bags cause i dont like wearing different bag every day. i wear one backpack for 6 or 8 months then i buy something new etc. this helped me for hoarding bags and bags i didnt want and didnt use anymore

    I know a lot of people advise against fast fashion, but I think that fast fashion works for some people. I don't usually buy it, I mostly buy from department stores, but I don't buy clothes often and I keep the clothes I buy for many years (because I don't have many clothes in the first place, it's like all of my clothes are staples). But I think for someone who changes their mind about the things they buy a lot, fast fashion is a good idea bc it allows you to try styles without the risk of investing

    However, you're a lifestyle and beauty guru. You earn money by testing out and trying the latest trends and people turn to you for style advice and inspiration. Definitely send unused clothes to charity shops and friends but please sit back and think that your large wardrobe is a consequence of your job. A job you're great at. Don't sweat it, hun.

    I think you are brave to be transparent. What I have found is that people who are extraordinarily critical of women whose “addiction” is fashion usually have a DIFFERENT addiction. It’s not that they are super holy and never do wrong- it’s just not fashion. That being said, I agree, as a fellow fashion lover, that we MUST keep on top of our impulses so we can be sensible and thoughtful in both purchasing and keeping things. But if you really can change and improve your day and emotion and inspire others with fashion, I for one, do not believe it is “pure waste nor pure evil” that’s like saying all art and beauty is purely wasteful and evil, it’s silly and parochial thinking. But YES, let’s all together keep the discussion and thought process ACTIVE- we shouldn’t fall prey to consumerism when money is so hard to earn and save. And it’s just too stressful to manage and store too much in our wardrobes. God bless you and thank you again for your transparency and honesty! Good work!!
