  • Swedish hardcore heroes Refused released their latest album, War Music, last fall. As they’ve done throughout their career, the radical rockers preach socialism, anti-capitalism, and more throughout the LP’s 10 songs.
Prior to Refused’s show in Brooklyn in February, we caught up with frontman Dennis Lyxzén backstage to the discuss the band’s longtime focus on sociopolitical issues. We also chatted about War Music, specifically touching on the songs “Blood Red”, “Violent Reaction”, and “Economy of Death”.

    Thanks for the great interview.
Being an anarchist my whole life and leaning left myself for almost two decades, I now perceive the "red" movement rather the complete opposite of freedom and anarchy. "Anarchy meaning: no rulers - just for the ignorant out there).
The socialist/communist ideas always are fascist to their very core and the concept of a free republic is the only system so far that allows a maximum of freedom and not too many rights infringed upon. I would like to live without rulers, but I acknowledge that this scares most folks.
So I strongly disagree with Dennis on Trump or the redistribution of wealth, but I love his music and his good heart of which he always is so generous to share it with us.

all you have accomplished is demonstrating that you don't know about socialism or anarchy at all. read a book; there is a wealth of literature that lay out the sophistication of both beliefs beyond "anarchy = no rulers" and "socialism = government owns things".
anarchy is actually the philosophy of being against concentration of power. socialism is the philosophy that workers should own the means of production. they are actually very compatible systems; anarchy and socialism both say that oligarchies should not rule us and that we should have ownership over what we do and make.

Decent band; it's slightly sad this guy suffered a lobotomy and is ridden with hateful ideologies (anti-capitalism, socialism, etc)...but it's the same with riot girrrl bands - there's some decent bands under that umbrella, despite the obvious idiotic nature of its members

all you have done is proven that you have never actually listened to Refused or any interview with Dennis Lyxzen. the lyrics and his interviews have ALWAYS been about these ideas. you are basically like the Republicans that listen to Rage Against the Machine but somehow never managed to understand the themes that have ALWAYS been a part of their music.

Thanks, Martha Stewart, for letting me know that capitalism is bad. I won’t buy your tickets or merch anymore.😅
No, seriously, I loved Refused - but socialism is a mess for large, non- homogenous countries.

LMAO Refused and Lyxzen have ALWAYS made music on these themes from the very beginning. you are basically the typical conservative that somehow never paid attention to lyrics and interviews over the years.
