    Nice tutorial. Been really trying to understand all of this since I purchased last year. Running a simple 5.1.2 out of my living room and trying to get the best results possible. Thank you

    Jon, what are you using with your Mic boom to mount the default Denon mic? I would like to do the same with my setup but am having a difficult time finding something that is compatible with a generic boom.
    Also, just finished watching the video. Thanks for doing this. Very informative and timely. I just purchased an older Marantz and will not have the option of Dirac. You made a comment around 39:50 about GEQ and PEQ when using Marantz/Denon. It was unclear if PEQ is proffered over GEQ or if one should leave this setting alone if using a Denon/Marantz receiver. Can you clarify?

      You will need the right adapter to convert a standard microphone thread to a standard photo camera mount. I have one with a ball joint so I can angle 90 degrees up.
      Parametric Equalization gives you a lot more control as you can vary the width "Q" of the boost/cut around that frequency. The Graphical Equalizer only have a narrow fixed width.

    What is the best setup when using 2 or 3 woofers? 2 woofers at the front or 1 woofer each at the front and rear diagonally? and what is the best way with 3 woofers?

    I believe that is for reflection speakers, not height or ceiling speakers.

      That sounds right, but I found it odd that Audyssey didn’t include in their documentation and their representative didn’t know. -Jon

    Thanks again for a great video. One comment and one question:
    1. Did you average multiple mic positions in REW this time? If not, this is a perfect example of when you should. That dip in the 50 Hz range may be very very local due to how bass works in a room. Just an inch away (forward, back, right, left, up and/or down) you might have a different response. Neither Audyssey nor Dirac promise to fix single positions, but they promise to improve the average response across the positions you measure.
    2. Many of us have been bugged by the fact that Denon/Marantz does not allow for setting the distance of any speaker farther away than 6 meters from any other speaker, which represents a big problem when it comes to subwoofer integration. Can you confirm that this limit is still in place for both Audyssey and Dirac please?

    • @ripewave

      I didn’t have a lot of time for measurement with this video production. I spent over a week researching MultEQ-X taking screen captures and annotating them with guidance. Next will be more analysis of the results after I work to improve with a better target curve and filters.
      The issue about have a 6 meter maximum distance I was not aware of, but will be a problem with larger spaces. Thanks for raising my awareness. -Jon

    • @isak6626
      @isak6626 4 місяці тому +1

      @@ripewave I understand. Nicely done!
      The limit is a problem in smaller spaces as well when the delay of the sound wave from the subwoofer is long, e.g. due to DSP delays. My first sub is 10,8 meters away sonically, and my second sub needs an additional meter to align with the first.
      Anyway, I actually found out that Dirac does not have the same limit in Denon/Marantz AVRs, after talking to Denon and Dirac. Dirac's limit is 50 milliseconds (= about 17 meters). Audyssey still has the same limitation, but it's Denon's "fault".

    Been debating on whether to get the Dirac Bass Control or the Multi EQ X. Have used both of the default/base EQs but would like to experiment with the more advanced options. Would you be prone to do a raw calibration of either or both(Dirac Bass Control and Multi EQ X)in real time? Very interested to see you do a live calibration with results and tweaks as part of a demo. Thanks

    • @ripewave
      @ripewave  4 місяці тому +2

      I am open to comparing Dirac Live Bass Control against Audyssey MultEQ-X. I already have plans to improve results from MultEQ-X and then presenting the REW measurements from both to compare.
      Not sure if the captures your “raw” and “real time” request. I think you are looking for something additional. If not, can you explain further your concept? -Jon

    I can't speak to the most up-to-date Audyssey implementations (I've got an "ancient" 3313ci, but my experience is that it sucked my center down as far as it could and made it impossible to hear dialogue.

    • @ripewave
      @ripewave  4 місяці тому

      From what I have heard, Audyssey has improved over the years. However, I find it odd that they continue to overly protect speakers and align mains and subwoofers around 0dB to auto balance for reference Levels causing a stair step discontinuous integration with the subwoofer. Time alignment issues and nulls are noticeable with default settings. -Jon

      @@ripewave Considering that I am most frequently listening WAAAY off on stage left (aka the kitchen), I don't notice that as much as I might otherwise, but I definitely had to go in and change things to get anything out of my center speaker. This is certainly making me more interested in Dirac at this point. Will watch as you learn more. Thanks!

    How you rate Audessey Multi EQ X compared to Dirac live with Bass Management?

    • @ripewave
      @ripewave  4 місяці тому +6

      So far Dirac has outperformed Audyssey MultEQ-X. However, that comparison is only using the Audyssey defaults. I am not ready to fully judge until I have attempted to calibrate with better settings a target curve. -Jon
