The Ricky's actor of the Hong Kong adaptation is super handsome and actually spot on casting. Maybe it won't be a stretch to say that he's the most handsome action movie actor I've ever seen.
For so long Riki-Oh was just something I knew through the hilariously gruesome OVA, so when I realized there was a manga I was amused... and then so intensely confused and intrigued I proceeded to binge-read it all. I didn't even remember the time-travel aspect of it all, just that it involved Nazi's, Ricky himself apparently being part Jewish(?) and some weird conspiratorial stuff culminating in a final fight at the Antarctic with Ricky being greeted by the final surviving kid-sidekick and a US dude who had some hilarious "Nothing gay with an admiring a guy's thoroughly built, buff and powerful bod I'm totally straight"-vibes with Ricky. Story was a trip and a half. Reading that and Fist of the North Star and comparing it to modern shonen sure shows that people are far more reluctant to kill people conpared to back then... but since SO MANY PEOPLE die in these oldschool stories before even leaving an impact, that's not necessarily a bad thing.
@@KhayJayArt What about the bad guy from "Bionic Commando" ? How does he tie into all of this? (I ask this because I read somewhere that that character was allegedly an inspiration for M. Bison.)
Another funny part of the Manga you missed: it actually outright steals from Fist of the North Star several times, with a couple henchman fights being Riki against Dollar Store Ripoffs of Mr. Heart (Ch. 17) and the Fang Clan (44 thru 45) Respectively.
tetsuya saruwatari has done alot more crazy mangas and anime than just riki oh and tough. two of interest for a video would be THE HARD and DOG SOLDIER
20:08 I actually love the first 2 Japanese Death Note movies. For somebody who has heard of the series but never watched it I found that they were easily digestible and very well-paced. They were 2 hours long but they didn't feel that lengthy. Later I learned about how they changed L and Light's fates from the manga, and personally I think the way the movie handled them is far superior. The third one was not very good, but mainly because they upped the gore whereas the others had a more psychological aspect to the horror.
"Why didn't Riki leave the Prison when he could've left the Prison at any time?" Riki stated he would kill those responsible for the innocent lives lost in that prison and freed the other prisoners. (whom we'd assume are innocent 😇)
I remember watching Granzort as a kid and thinking it was weird that the giant robots emerge out of an arcane symbol that just happens to be the Star of David (the one on the flag of Israel), but it was everywhere back then. Like in Silent Moebius too.
Interestingly, the flashlights tied to the head are probably a reference to the Tsuyama Massacre of 1938 in which the killer was known to have tied two flashlights to his head and ended up murdering 30 people in his village with a shotgun and all kinds of other weapons. This was also referenced in the Yatsuhakamura movie of 1977 in which one of the characters goes on a psychotic rampage with two flash lights tied to his head. (Not sure if the flashlights were mentioned in the original novel the movie was based on...)
Theosophy (which had some influence on fascism (the whole ahnenerbe, wewelsburg occultism etc.) , but also on the left), used the hexagram and swastika as well.

I always had the vibe that the movie was an homage to fist of the North Star. But learning about the manga and ova’s is really interesting. Also I can’t think of more inappropriate symbols on their hands lol.
Am I the only one who liked the japanese deathnote movie? It wasn't a dead on remake, it largely respected the characters but did it's own thing. at least that is how I felt.
Kind of a shame to see such compromised adaptations, but the movie does seem like a lot of ridiculous fun. Honestly, I kind of like the JoJo live-action movie, but I’ll freely admit that part of that is because we have a more accurate anime adaptation anyway. I prefer the Stardust Crusaders OVA over the Diamond is Unbreakable movie, but I think one reason I kind of enjoy both is just seeing how they changed things in their adapting. They’re sort of their own beasts instead of an accurate retelling and, with the anime around anyway, I really like that.

I thought Bison was just a Buff Yasunori Kato, but this actually makes more sense.
Both Bison and the bad guy in this anime were inspired by Kato Yasunori
