Just last week I read about a woman who spent $34.99 at Goodwill for a statue bust, only to eventually discover it was 1st century Roman, and had been lost during WWII. The lady worked hard to find out what it was, and then said she was kind of sad she didn’t get to keep it. I’m not sure, but it didn’t seem like she got any kind of reward, maybe they cut her a check for $35 for her time and expense.
man i would have buried it so far away and then forgotten where that place was but then suddenly recalled where it was.. but only for a lot more then $35 dollars.
Thank History Guy. I am 1 of the millions that have, several times, visited this master piece. It is wonderful and worthy of anyone's bucket list. I always study the Judges Panel closely and wonder ... I too think that priests of the Catholic Church in Ghent stole it hoping to collect a ransom.
What an amazing story. Honestly, I feel the copy of the painting is a really kind gesture on the part of the artist who painted it. Even though it’s not the original, it seems to be magnificent enough to fill it’s big shoes enough to be put on permanent display! I’m sure at some point someone will accidentally unearth the original.
My worry would be that due to passage of time and several generations, will the finder k ow what he has found? And hopefully will not just toss it out as outdated trash.
I used to have a very large, somewhat older book about the Ghent Altarpiece and the art of Jan van Eyck. It had colour plates and little folding panels. I think the book was stolen by someone else from a private Chicago university. It came into my possession without my knowledge, and when I contacted them about it, they seemed confused about why I'd return it. It has subsequently been lost to me through unknown means. Fitting.
Well, missing artwork thought lost forever sometimes turns up in some odd place. There was some woman in France(?) who had a small painting by one of the masters hanging in her kitchen for something like 40 years. Then there was the Roman bust that turned up in a thrift store (Charity Shop for you Brits) for $35...turns out to be from ancient Rome and was looted from a German Museum after WW2. It's on it's way back to Germany. I don't think the German Government is even going to give her her $35 back :(
Yes I just heard about that - a thrift store in Texas. Kinda makes you want to do MORE of that. A young man (not all that long ago in fact) found an original copy of Common Sense in a LIBRARY RESALE of all places.
This story and the story of the Russian Amber Room have always intrigued me. You have 2 very large pieces of art that are missing and priceless and are also very easy to spot but yet both have never been found. I would love to be able to have the money that I could go to Europe and try to find them myself as I love doing research on art like this. Thank you for another very entertaining and informative video.
Amber room burned with the destruction of Königsberg Castle. The Soviets accidentally burned their own treasure and hid it out of embarrassment. This is well known, there is no mystery outside of why people still watch the “history” channel
I had the same thought. I think artists of that era doing portraits were probably tuned into how the subject would like to be seen, so I'm guessing she didn't mind and wanted that stern countenance to show.
Don't you just love it when people think the can automatically remember a case's detail? Therefore, no need to write it down. I think that's funny. Thanks for another great video.
I don't know if any of you are familiar with the headless painting known as "the origin of the world", which is hanging in the Musee D'Orsay in Paris; it appears that at some point someone apparently removed the head of the female figure from the painting, but the missing piece of the painting purportedly turned up a few years ago (though the identification and authentication is controversial). I am intentionally not giving you too many details so that it won't spoil the surprise when you go look it up yourselves.....🤔😯😲
Antiques road Show. A novice painting of the Titanic.......but it was painted on the back of a menu from the famous ship wreck. Value? Lots! “Monuments Men”does a fine job covering this.
Interesting. I have often wondered about the amount of art that was stolen during the war that was never returned. In my own theories some of it was used to buy the freedom or lack of prosecution of certain highly placed individuals such as Captains of Industry from the 3rd Reich. The art forever disappeared into private collections.
There's also the art collection that was pilfered from a museum, which Boston mobster Whitey Bulger was presumed to have had a hand in, but he went to his grave without revealing any secrets.
@@goodun2974 i did not know about that one. It is said stolen art is a form of currency in certain circles. It would be cool to delve into the mysterys.
