Hi Doug, thanks for highlighting the possible waterproof glove falsehoods. I had 3 pairs of 'waterproof gloves and so did my wife., so between us we had 6 pairs of 'waterproof' gloves. All were quite expensive, including pairs of Sleanskinz, North Face and . After a terrible expense of hiking in 50mph wind and rain rain which then turned to snow we both experience leaking gloves within half an hour. The gloves literally filled up with water and the finger ends were full of water. As the freezing weather came in our hands were seriously cold and we had to get off the mountain and abandon the trip. The next day I tested all of our waterproof gloves and mittens by simply dipping them into a bowl of water. All the gloves leaked through the seams on the fingers:, one pair within 10 seconds, the Sealskinz and North Face within 30 seconds. The only things that survived were the waterproof mittens, the never leaked, even after 30 minutes under water. I now carry my waterproof mittens on the mountains with an extra thermal liner glove inside when necessary. the rest of the gloves I wear in winter when I walk locally, never on the mountains. I recommend anyone to who has waterproof gloves to test them out first. Ours gloves were OK in light rain, in cold snowy conditions they were good but in cold, driving rain they were useless.

Agreed 100%! There are standards for making claims of waterproofing but they don't always seem to be followed. Have you seen the SHOWA 282 Gloves? They look hilarious but Andrew Skurka swears by them!

The spare pair, ( if i remembered them ) is always the best... everything fails somewhere, somehow.

Great review, needed an explanation just like yours. I cycle 150 miles per week for work, all weathers. I’m going to get a pair of the Ultras now.

Pink kitchen gloves could be a new trail trend though. I think you should use those. Great info on those gloves, Doug!

They'd go great with a hot pink camo fanny pack and rain kilt! :)

I think light weight waterproof over gloves made from same material as waterproof jacket is the answer to ride your bike in the rain and your fingers stay dry and warm. Also they don't get any space for storage, Can storage them are the back pocket of your waterproof jacket.

A nice one yeah they do some socks too which seem worth the money and a much better option than waterproof shoes for multi day adventures and the camino

Hi! Hows the sizing for sealskinz? Does it run true to size?

    • @BackcountryPilgrim

They did for me - I just followed whatever guidelines the manufactirer suggested.

    • @BackcountryPilgrim

I'd go up unless they are a base layer under other gloves, tight gloves are worse than slightly loose.

Do the sealskinz make your hands sweaty at all? And would you happened to know how much they weigh by any chance?

The Portland, Oregon REI didn't have any waterproof gloves with touchscreen for cycling in the store... They told me i could pay them with my cash, they would transfer them in.... I said, "ok... my short finger wide hand is really hard to fit". "can you refund my CASH,... what i used to purchase them... if the fingers are too long and fold over, or if the palm is too tight..? " the only option is to get a store credit... I said what if i don't find gloves that fit my hands and my need..? Remember.. We are talking about a $150 pair of gloves... They told me i would have to use the store credit to buy some other item... I need freaking gloves.. I have spent thousands of dollars and all that REI wants is money.. They would not give me a guarantee to find a fit or another glove that meets my need. I would have to find another item, (that i don't need) in order to use up my store credit... The PNW is known for cold wet winters, and cycling is a big sport in Oregon (especially Portland) but they don't carry any of the cycling gloves that meet the needs of their clientele.. Glove either fit, or they don't.. if the fingers are to long the touchscreen will not work.. and if they are too tight, they will cut off circulation and your hands get cold.. I thought they were the experts.. I have decided to B O Y C O T T REI because they are ridicules.. and Greedy.. Their cash policy is crazy because you can't return items that don't work for the original tender.. A violation of business ethics..
