    The Sun's average daily movement is 1 degree and that of the Moon is 13 degree. So the net movement of the Moon in a day is 12 degrees (13 - 1 = 12). That is why tithi is 12 degrees. Then came 360 degree /12 degree as 30 days.

    You touched upon karana today. Please elaborate on karanas. Also Yoga if possible. That would complete panchanga the five aspects of time

    • @Ahargana
      @Ahargana  2 роки тому +2

      The Surya Siddhanta defines Karana as half a tithi. The chara and sthira classification seems to be in the realm of astrology, hence I do not intend to elaborate this any further. Yoga is indeed defined in Surya Siddhanta but I have not applied thought to that. Maybe I will come back to yoga after I have understood it properly.

    Hello Sir, thank you for making these videos, very helpful. I've a question regarding determination of janmatithi. Since we consider the tithi at sunrise to be tithi of the day until next sunrise, if the tithi has changed in between the day and someone is technically born into the next tithi, is the tithi at sunrise still considered to be janmatithi or the tithi at the point in time of birth?

    • @Ahargana
      @Ahargana  11 місяців тому

      Tithi at the point in time of birth, of course.

    • @Ahargana
      @Ahargana  11 місяців тому +1

      @nagarjunananth Think of it this way: if you are asked "what was the tithi yesterday?", since no specific time is mentioned you look towards the sunrise time. If you are asked "A baby was born at 8PM yesterday. What is the janma tithi of that baby?", why would you ignore the 8PM and look towards sunrise time?

    • @nagarjunananth
      @nagarjunananth 11 місяців тому

      @ahargana I agree with you sir and I think that should be the case for accuracy. The reason for my doubt was a couple of astrologers who had determined my janmatithi when I was born chose to use the one at sunrise and hence I wanted to know if I was missing anything.

    How do we calculate the time at which the 12 degrees are completed?

    • @Ahargana

      This involves calculations (gaņita) that I have not studied :-(

      @@nivedyanair Surya Siddhant has many chapters involving detailed astronomy that you can study. The first two chapters are about mean position and true position of planets. Mean positions assume uniform orbital velocity of the grahas. True positions apply corrections on mean positions to account for non-uniform orbital velocity due to elliptical orbits.
      There are many more astronomical texts which I have listed in a community post, of which drgganitha is the one most used by panchanga makers today.
      If you do not trust translations you can go to the Sanskrit originals.

    I just happened to chance upon this video and I see that you are putting together a number of videos for us. Regarding Tithi, you have defined it as "the time the moon takes to move 12 degrees from the Sun". That is an incorrect definition. The correct definition should be when the Moon is in any 12 degree angular segment from the Sun and there are 30 such segments as 30x12 is 360 a full circle. You also mention that when it is a particular tithi at sunrise, the whole day until the next sunrise is considered that tithi. That may not be quite correct as the tithi may need to be existent for a certain amount of time after sunrise for that statement to be true.

    • @Ahargana
      @Ahargana  Рік тому

      Pls carefully observe 19:04 to 19:54 and also 22:40 to 22:50. In one chandramasa the Moon moves ~389 degrees and not 360 degrees. Once you understand this, everything will become clear and you will see "30 segments of 12 degrees each" is not tenable.

      As for tithi prevailing at sunrise, consider Oct 3rd. Sunrise is 6:09. Chaturthi ends at 6:11. And the entire solar say (Oct 3rd) is labeled Chaturthi tithi. Hence, even 2 minutes after sunrise seems to be sufficient. (The above times are from drikpanchang.com)

      ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ Kishore anna, at 18:20 in this video you make a point that it is the 00:04 of April 20th.
      Few questions below.
      1. You pointing this out gives me an impression that since we were at Sapthami at 00:00 20th April would be Sapthami. But elsewhere you have said we consider - that tithi - which is prevailing at sunrise. What is the correct interpretation?
      2. Midnight definition - is it 00:00 IST? Or is it based on the Sun position at that particular place on earth? (With this, the midnight at Mumbai will be way later than at Kolkata)
      3. Does tithi also depend on where you are? Say in India? Or USA?
      I have just started watching Ahargana series chronologically. My questions might have been answered in subsequent videos. But I thought let me put my questions here for my future reference
      And thanks a lot for this series. As if I was waiting all these years for this 🙏
