I can't thank you enough for sharing your knowledge! I'm at the point of sending my 454 block to be cleaned and checked at our local machine shop and this was my last hurdle to get there! After failed attempts with Allen keys, the front to are now damn near star bits, haha.
Heat the plug (not the block) with a cutting torch for about 15 seconds until it is just red, melt canning wax on the plug, let it cool for about 30 seconds and the plug will spin out with no problem. Been doing it this way for over 30 years, maybe one plug in a thousand will require drilling. It's a common method that all machine shops I know use. Hardware store canning wax is all you need.
was the first (bigger) drill bit a special type, as it appears to be left hand fluted...which then need to rotate left hand or counter clock wise direction?
They are all left handed drill bits, you need a special left handed drill, just reversing a normal drill will not work. When you buy yourself a left handed drill could you put the address of the company that sold it to you in the comments, I'm looking for one myself. I got the striped paint I was looking for now I just need my left handed tools.

Yep wax works good to I just find it faster and less of a hassle to drill em and be done with it

Why don't You use any cooling solution when drilling like cutting oil?
It's cast iron. It doesn't need any lube
Try using a left hand drill bit...
What size tap should I use for the galley plugs on a 350?
