  • The Celtics are the champs, and Brad Stevens is a major reason why. Not only did he make the moves that put Boston over the top, he made the moves before the moves to set the Celtics up for this moment. John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal discusses why coaching Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown gave Stevens an advantage, and why Stevens' willingness to do things Danny Ainge wouldn't set him up for success.

    Brad has been a miracle to this team. Even though him and Joe are different he understands what each player can do for the Celtics and sees potential in guys that didn’t pan out elsewhere or didn’t get drafted, like Sam Hauser, Neemias Queta, and Luke Kornet.

    Loved the podcast! lol thanks for the vegan mention, that’s me! Had veggie burgers, pasta salad, grilled corn on the cob etc. Anyways, reqlly impressed with your insight, knowledge, seeing it from both ways, you don’t need someone else on the podcast, very enjoyable. Cleaned my pool, listening to you, could not stand one more trump video about the recent events. Thanks for your hard work and again, Celtics are champions 🍀🏀💪!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Brad was a great HC and he's been a genius at building this team. An overlooked part of that is getting and keeping guys under contract - doing extensions early, and paying the right guys what they are worth. Ainge seemed to want to win every trade and every contract negotiation. Brad was willing to give in order to have continuity and have the team have peace of mind and no drama. He also picked the exact right people to bring in - Al Horford, Derrick White, KP, Jrue Holiday - he knew what guys would be the right for the team and would put the team and winning first. He built this team and deserves a huge amount of credit and praise.

    Great pod, John! Thanks for the review of Brad’s time as coach and GM. I consider myself a lucky fan to have him as procurer of talent and character for our Cs. While we may not have the flashiest team for clickbait purposes, we benefit from the overall mature player attitude and ability to coalesce as a solidly focused team working towards the same goal. And this year it all came together! Who knows how things will fare over the next two seasons, but so far I give Brad my old Latin teacher’s highest grade of A++. I am left wondering how many GMs moved up from the team’s head coach position. Seems to have real advantages depending on the individual’s overall skill set. Happy 4th!

    They about to be the BIG8, I would love all of us to witness at least a total of 3 Championships with this window! Happy they are prioritizing Chemistry! Congrats to Kemba truly a good guy however, this team as I was always saying needed a facilitating defensive minded guard at the helm to get to the finals the way they did in 2008. They got away from it with Isaiah *Kyrie and Kemba good and bad moments but always wanted them to give it to Marcus sooner! Now we got Derrick & Jrue as like the greatest defensive backcourt to pair with one of the greatest Wing duo ever! With more chemistry #Mazzulla can build on last year and keep adding curve balls to the #Celtics arsenal! #BradStevens is a master architect for building with the pillars Danny engineered!

    Amazing how things played out. I believe there are no coincidences. Stevens takes the GM job. (a lot of guys wouldn't be humble enough to admit maybe coaching isn't their strong suit) Then Ime gets hired, does a hell of a job but let's his personal wants & needs get in the way. So enter Mazzulla; comes in with hardly any NBA coaching experience, has skeptics lining up to say how he's not the man for the job, then leads Boston to the ECF & Finals in his first two seasons, winning the NBA Championship this year. Unreal and fcking awesome. Thank you John! ☘🔒🏆🥂

    John you’re right some GM’s in sports are afraid to make moves to improve the team to win and end up playing cheap to win and it blows up in their face. Now the hiring of Joe I had faith and knew he was going to make it but just needed time vs other who wanted him gone.

    When he was first hired, I figured Danny Ainge was making him the fall guy for the tank project... I still wonder if that was the case, and Brad just won more games than expected... But whatever. He's proved himself one of the great minds in the game

    Brad, quite literally, has only ever made one "bad" move: bringing back Enes. And that one wasn't a big deal. I don't consider the Schroeder deal bad, considering the position they were in, what it cost, and the upside (while we KNEW Enes wouldn't work). He was gone so quickly, I don't count it against him.
    On the ego: imagine the ego it took to step in and just fire (without being able to fully explain it) a popular, already-successful, up-and-coming coach and replace him at the 11th hour with a complete unknown in the aftermath of a Finals loss. And Brad never flinched (and I admire them for having what are clearly higher standards than most of the public and punditry in standing up for women and workplace ethics).

    The rumor has always been that the Jays (especially JT) quit on Brad or tuned him out. You don't hear JT say much about Brad, so it seems like there is something there, or was. Wish the Jays would talk about how far Brad took them

    • @mikotagayuna8494
      @mikotagayuna8494 3 місяці тому +5

      I highly doubt it since tuning coaches out is a good indicator of low character and would've gotten them traded. In hindsight, we can conclude that it was the people they traded away (Kyrie, for instance) that tuned Brad out.

      @@mikotagayuna8494exactly, it's highly unlikely either of them would have been kept around if they were actively disrupting the team like that. If anything Brad keeping them after his FO move is a huge sign of support and confidence.

    KP is my favorite player. Y'know what's funny? Everyone talking about "who's the best Big Three?" and NO ONE mentioning JT+JB+KP. KP is no more perpetually "injured" than Embiid, and when he's playing... let's just say he's a lot better than the 46th (or whatever it was) best player.

    Brad is better than Ainge as a GM. I think Ainge for stake after the Celtics won the chip. He gets credit for trading for IT and drafting Smart, Rob and the Jays. However, there were some moves he did not make for whatever reason. I think Brad understands what it takes to keep the championship window open.
