Vox Valvenergy Series Overview - Should you Buy one?

- For my Presets visit: johnnathancordy.gumroad.com/ Way back at NAMM, Vox announced these pedals, the Valvenergy pedals have a "nu-tube" in them, not sure if that's important or not, but here here in this video I'm trying a few out in Cab Sim mode, and effectively using them like I would a Strymon Iridium - drive pedals can go in front of it, reverb and delay after, and it's a direct tone that I'm really digging here!
Also using - a Strymon Nightsky (post) and J Rockett Broverdrive and Origin Effects RevivalDrive Hot Rod.
The range includes Mystic Edge (Vox Ac30), Cutting Edge (heavier tones?), Silk Drive (Fender boutique style) and Copperhead Drive (Marshall tones).
If you use this link to grab one, I hopefully get a small kickback...

Vox have also loaned me the full range of pedals to try out so there should be some more videos coming!

I've decided to make it possible to grab both my bundles (the expression bundle with freeze presets has always been separate) together for £5 - www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr... - I will then email you a link to both bundles!
You can get my EXPRESSION patches in this bundle using this link - I will then send out the patches! www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr...
Try my patches (60-70+) for Helix or HX Stomp in this bundle for £3 using this link - I will then send out the patches! www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr...
Try my patches for Pod GO for £3 using this link - I will then send out the patches! www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr...
this is the kind of gear demo i want... not more tweeking and noodling. in actual music context the pedals are demoed.. .. At the same time it inspires me to practice more and to improve my playing. Thanks man!
Sounds better than I expected. Seems like a good pair with the stomp to take the dsp load off for amp models.
Phenomenal playing dude love it!
Bought the Silk Drive after watching this. Now for the unbearably long wait for it in the mail.
Great job!
Beautiful playing!!!
Hey John, greetings from the US. I've watched HUNDREDS of players on UA-cam and there's something about your phrasing... Just really dig the way you play man. Keep it coming!
As an aside, I recently purchased the Simplifier and am really loving it. I'm strictly running direct into my interface for recording/practice and not having the issues you reported with the effects return loop. Regards!
Thanks for keeping an eye on these little corners. How would you rate these compared to one of the Neuraldsp plugins - say Plini? I tend to create one preset that's just at breakup and play that - the rest of the options are wasted on me - the Mystic Edge looks like it would do that quite nicely
I'd say they sound pretty good! Btw. be careful that the UA-cam bot don't mistake that for a certain Mr. Mayer song... hehe ;)
I literally thought that first song sounds very old JM
Cant decide if i want to give Nutubes a try and get the Silk Drive, or get the Fender MTG Distortion or the MTG:LA. Your demo of the Silk Drive sounds amazing
Best demo of these I’ve seen. I watched the vox live spot just to see if these could take delays and reverbs, without getting to muddy, no answer from vox. You were running the delay into them and direct in correct? Cause they sound great if that’s how you were running them. Great playing as well.
Actually no, I'm running the delay/verb POST, like I do with the Iridium!
@@johnnathancordy is there anyway you could upload one with the delay reverb pre. I know the silk drive and mystic edge would be the only ones that might stay clean enough to do this, or if you’ve tried this already, and could comment your opinion on if they can be used this way, and have enough volume for a small ampless rig. Thanks again.
@@yoshowa absolutely can do this!
They do sound great, in your hands anyway ! I'm not sure if I wouldn't just wait a bit more till I can afford something like an Iridium which on the paper offers more options and possibilities (not even talking of how amazing it sounds in your demos) ? But that's subjective of course. These are even more "straight forward" pedals which is great too, and at this price point I can definitely understand why they should be successful. Incredible playing once again !
I had an Iridium and think these pedals are better. No latency, better feel and better tone. That is what I feel. I am playing them into a guitar amp.
Man I’ve been back and forth so many times trying to find the perfect amp sim that doesn’t cost the earth and I feel like the perfect one doesn’t exist. I’m tempted by one of these perhaps at that price
The pedal preamps from Joyo are awfully good and dirt cheap. I have the AC Tone and California Sound. I go direct into my fx loop. They take pedals really well too.
@@keithbenedict8764 don’t those joyo pedals have an amp cab baked into them though? Still sounds ok going into an fxloop of an amp?
@@lMlusashi Yeah, sounded great going through the FX return. They do not sound good if you go direct into the front of the amp. These pedals are preamps and don't get along with other preamps very well.
@@keithbenedict8764 I have american sound and once had british sound. but those pedals give tons of noise.
Which one would you recommend for cleaner sounds, silk drive or the mystic edge? Nice playing btw
Really digging the mystic edge. Taking my deluxe reverb over to vox territory.
3:10 is that now all Silk drive (with external IR) with no pre pedals? Sounds great in the bridge!! Cheers for the vid :)
These and that boss gt 1000 core might be very impressive
Hi. Great skills. Does the copperhead in cab sim at low gain, as clean platform, is as good as iridium? Thanks
I don't know if you ever mentioned it before, but what do you use for your looping? I'm super impressed by your loops, always quality. Cheers.
Mostly do it in the DAW!
@@johnnathancordy I'm curious what your methodology is in the DAW. Are you doing the looping live as you're playing via something like Ableton's built in looper device or is all done in post?
@@Brandontsmith85 I just record to a click and overlap the parts!
@@johnnathancordy Daaang. I never even considered doing that. Probably my timing is trash, haha! That gives me something to work towards though!
Even your old bad stuff is good. Was so close to getting one of these last winter. Remain unconvinced. Hope they do more nutube stuff though.
Hi there. This is an excellent set of demos. On a slightly unrelated note, your backing tracks sound amazing. How do you generate them or create them? Also how much do you spend on creating the backing bass and drums? I'm a bedroom guitar player and backing tracks often frustrate me. Any advice would be greatly welcomed. Thanks
ua-cam.com/video/IIWapis0Ls8/v-deo.html here is the process!
ua-cam.com/video/3RHdRfB9Nc8/v-deo.html and this one
@@johnnathancordy this is amazing. Thanks loads
I am interested in buying a silk drive. My thinking using it into the “power amp” in/output of the Katana.
did you try it?
@@SergeiVlassov I did, and I also have the Mystic Edge. Accidentally killed the Silk by hitting it with an unintentional 18 volts.
@@jr0706 sorry to hear about Silk! How do you like the results? I have copperhead and thinking of trying Mystic Edge. I Have a real VOX AC, but for convenience for everyday use I would like to have compact version of AC tone.
@@SergeiVlassov it's fantastic. Just be sure you give it the proper current. I was starving mine of about 500ma for months. I distorted very early. Once I got it the 600ma it requires, it really made a difference. I play at church in a good size band, with keys, pads, lots of vocals, etc. That means if I'm using an amp (or sim) that is too scooped, it's really easy to get lost in the mix. The upper midrange chime of the Mystic is perfect to cut without cutting too much. But I am more into the American/Fender sound. I have the Joy American Sound for that, and it sounds great, but not like the Silk. I need another.
@@jr0706 Thank you for the information! I should check, I'm afraid I am using 500mA with my Copperhead.
Been listening to Mayer and Cutting Crew huh?
Have you tried using these as a pre-amp for the cabzeus?
this is exactly my plan also... have you tried it? if not.. will report back in a few weeks
you got me broo
I was planning to use this for learning Soft stoner rock ( one video inspired me(....and now when I already ordered i hear videos where it doesnt Sound like stoner at all: D im just a begginer so i can practise with anything but do you think stoner rock can be played with this? I mean this dirty fuzz Sound....
Not without a Fuzz - these are basically just Amp sims
@@johnnathancordy maybe one day i will buy Some fuzz pedal Then....this one seems very versatile that 's why i chose it
@@johnnathancordy I checked this... I paid a lot and it sounds just like amplifier but louder lol im a bit disappointed Plus my amplifier sounds like short circuit Sound-_-
Subscribed!
Nice
Awesome tone and playing! What power supply are you using? VOX is being anal about using the "optional" power supply that is 600mA or higher! Of course they do not offer it. I have the Cutting Edge
Oh I was able to power it with the Harley Benton thingy!
@@johnnathancordy Nice! Did not hear any noise. I just ordered the "Truetone 1 SPOT" for mine just to be on the safe side. Cheers and keep those amazing tunes
For me the Mystic Edge is a really challenge to find drive pedals I like with it. I use 3rd party IR and graphic EQ. Does the Copperhead and Silk Drive take pedals better?
I have real VOX AC and it is the same. I actually haven't found any OD/Distortion pedal that sounds good in it. But I love VOX AC for its chimey cleans on the edge. Copperhead does take pedals well.
We've got the afternoon
How did you afford Pacino? That’s clearly Al and not your dog.
A church going direct... probably Protestant 😬
I see what you did there lol.
I’m a church musician. Still use amps, but this may convince me otherwise.
The Boss GT-1000 Core has just overtaken the HX Stomp in the race to be my first multi fx cab sim box of tricks. ua-cam.com/video/c-ojCBbreO0/v-deo.html
I think it looks cool, but the gt1000 doesn't seem to get much love?
@@johnnathancordy Not yet. But there are some tones that I really and others not so much. I found out that the hx stomp uses a lot of electrc and can also get hot. This also caught my attention. line6.com/support/topic/37291-hx-stomp-discoveries-and-disappointments-blocksand-surprises-my-experience/
@@davman115 yah for the Hx stomp there are compromises.
I would have to imagine the gt1000core will also get hot - line 6 do write in their manual that this is normal and mine is still going strong after two years?
@@johnnathancordy lol don't say that. You're making me have second thoughts.
@@davman115 let's be fair, to cram all that gt1000 processing power into this tiny thing is really really cool!!
