What Messi does is slow a little bit to get the defender off his footing, off his pace, just for an instant as he has to adjust to Messi. In that instant, Messi accelerates, leaving the defender flat-footed and beaten by a step or two. It's excellent technique, perfect timing, not raw speed. It's not that Messi is that quick, it's that he makes his move precisely at the moment the defender stops to readjust his footing for an instant. It's tenths of a second that give Messi a step or two advantage. Just beautiful.
