The forest was shrinking, but the trees kept voting for the Axe, for the Axe was clever and convinced the trees that because his handle was made of wood, he was one of them.

@@AlexeiRamotar yes indeed, a methaphor but nice NO! Its Sad cause it says:
By keeping on selling his books via Amazon he FEEDS Amazon!
Let him sell his books via smaller retailers! Alternative, real progressive, CONSCIOUS retailers do exist which attracts even more people to buy his books! Otherwise its a Vicious circle indeed!
Does he want that? NO! So stop it where you can!
So, his argument I don’t agree with, doesn’t hold in the end!!

Thank you Yanis, I really loved this part: Power always rests on the law of large numbers. No despot, oligarch or entrepreneur has enough power to rule millions without their tacit consent. The truth about despotic power lies not in despot`s weapons, bank accounts or computer servers but in the minds of those that despot controls. as long as the many believe they are powerless, they remain so... I think all the people should remember this forever.

I'm beginning to wonder if even my local Doctor's practice now belongs to some corporation. The staff come and go like those in an Amazon warehouse and when I try to make an appointment or to visit, it's like trying to get into the Pentagon. And I'm now so unfamiliar to them that at interviews they look at the computer screen more than they look at me. It IS efficient - in its way - but are we patients becoming livestock? LONDON, UK.

The key to beating Amazon is:
      1. In the USA use it ALL THE TIME undo it becomes so all powerful that the ONLY thing to do will be to nationalize or as it will put all the other stores it is business.
Outside the USA : BAN IT
Amazon is a MONOPSONY so can be BANNED entirely.
Then CREATE national or Supranational store NATIONALISED that will perform the same function but with state/worker/customer ownership.

I am a classical liberal free marketeer. But one thing can change my mind about the role of Government: is it inevitable of free markets that corporations continue accumulating capital tot he extent that they control governments. Of course, where government is involved the market’s freedom is to be questioned, but “too big to fail,” corporate welfare and the cooperation of businesses in the surveillance state go beyond the pale. Can it truly be inevitable, rather than subject to intelligent parsimonious intervention?

This is similar to a suggestion I read during the housing crisis of 2008. The housing market derivatives were failing, and so the government stepped in to buy the failed derivatives. If instead of this, the government had stepped in to pay the mortgages on the failing properties, the highly leveraged derivatives would have been turned back into stable values. But the banks, which by this time had set themselves up to profit from shorting the companies that were in trouble with the failing derivatives, would have lost all their potential profits on the shorts.

In the USA we aren't required to pay the Social Security tax on any income beyond the Social Security Wage Base. In 2021, this limit is $142,800, up from the 2020 limit of $137,700.
Suppose we were to do away with "Income Taxes" and remove the limit on SS?
6.2% of "ALL Income" (GDP) would be directed toward Its intended purpose, SOCIAL SECURITY.

As Celeste implies, conversations are liberating, they enrich free thinking. The problem for all of us is lurking in the socialisation of conversations as they become related to any systemic - logical - description, eh voilà, the social inéluctably fragments into tribes. Thus we need polymaths, like Yanis, but our universities produce specialists. That has to change.

Yanis, the big issues I have with your proposal is the same I have with capitalism as well. Everything revolves around work and democratization of work. Why must we be (as one question was proposed) workers or consumers? We are on the verge fully automated everything. To the point where we won’t need to work as employees for corporations. People are so much more than just mindless employees and the path to true freedom is demonetization of everything. I know people would consume at will if everything was free but just like when billionaires have everything they could ever want or at least the ability to, some switch to philanthropy. I believe most people would do as such.

Look at other companies, like Trader Joe's, who did not nothing to help consumers -- not even senior citizens. They kept their costs down and pocketed greater profits. I am grateful to Amazon!!!

Whenever a communities livelihood and necessities become dependent on a service or business, that service or business should become public. Just like a road is public, Amazon should be public because it now has become a necessity and without it would cause a crisis. Amazon is a private enterprise but its customers are wholly dependent on it. This is the criteria. Private businesses should only be allowed to be private if their absence doesn't cripple a community.

I have a question regarding funding after having read this lovely book. How does funding work when commercial banking and share markets are banned?
In the book you say that this occurs by employees that are encouraged to loan money to their/or other companies. But how is that different from commercial banking? Is it simply a question of scale, and if so, what stops small people from making a living and in the long run a business out of loaning money to companies? - > that eventually leading to the reoccurrence of commercial banking.
If anyone has any insight or answer to this, I would be very glad. It's something I've been wondering about for a long time.
Thanks for a lovely read as always Yanis.

I think it might see a bigger distribution of the sci-fi novel if an illustrated version is also made. Kind of like Red Rosa.

Fighting Amazon is just treating the symptom, not addressing the cause. They are cheap and efficient and also 100% legal. They are cheap because much of the cost is externalised and the people pick up the tab - eg. they use our infrastructure and pay no tax. Our governments are unwilling to address this issue seriously, that is the problem.

Amazon does not pay zero taxes. It pays negative taxes, which means that you pay it for simply existing when it files its taxes.

you mentioned that corporations such as Amazon should have their revenue taxed at about 5%.I totally agree with corporations having to pay tax but ultimately, I believe that this financial burden (tax) would be passed on to the consumer so in the end, it would be the consumer paying the corporate tax and not the corporation itself. ie: Amazon and the like.

The world is full of online retailers. Even my local (150 year old) bookstore has an online presence.
It just takes a little searching time to find what you want.

go on amazon, find what you are looking for, note the seller, look the seller up independently and buy from them directly.

Thank you Sir Yanis for the great talk & book. My group is convinced that the old world systems are falling apart as they must, to make way for brand new, much better, humane systems - by and for the people. Believe it or not, the future is so bright that new words will have to be invented to describe the wonderful new situation we will soon find ourselves in. The timing of all that is up to the people... Power to the people! Those in power want us to be pessimistic & hopeless. It really helps to look on the bright side.

If I may, two reasons: 1. More of the same, just a reset and back to the same exploitation system. 2. There will never be a reset for us, they will just use it to 'take us thirsty over the river'. They will manipulate a popular idea to hide more exploitation, like with what they did with the gas-tax that started the yellow-west protests!

1:00 Oh, so a complete failure of the whole system then? Think the rot associated with oil spills might have something to do with that. If only all the gas stations were fire proof electric, or if were some kinds of hybrids, then they might’ve had more foresight. Myself I concentrate on the quality of the soil, along with the food supply that follows. So the difference between a dustbowl of crops, monocultures of crops, to a permanent polycultures. Geoff Lawton, www.permaculturenews.org, or something along those lines, Rob Greenfield of Florida is one of the best examples I’ve happened to pass. Wholeheartedly, all the best.
