It's always interesting how you describe the efforts that you make to accomplish your goals. I imagine that you and the consultant are on the phone everyday. So many small decisions that can add up to make everything you hope for. a question for you, are you related to Maartje Murphy? There is an article in Successful Farming in which she and her husband Casey are featured. The article featured their farm. Would your mother be Conny van Bedaf? I thought what chance could it be if in fact that your one family.
I typically have contact with our nutritionist a few times a week and he's here in person once every 2 weeks and we'll have a meeting in person at that time. There's always something we're trying to improve! Maartje is my sister and Conny would be my mom
Thanks, Piet. Does all your silage, etc, feed sit on concrete? How many cows do you milk. We are ranchers in Australia and grow a lot of corn silage and earlige, keep it in those long plastic bags about 150 meters in length. You feed supply is very impressive. Thanks for the videos.
Thank you! I'd like to have all of our feed on concrete, we currently have a barley silage pile on dirt. We are milking 1600 cows.
When You take a sample from those wrapped big square bales do you tape up the hole or no? Good video Piet! 👍

@@bw6152 OK I thought You would just didn’t see You do it or talk about it. Is there spoilage where you took the sample as oxygen entered the bale?
Usually, we will tape them up unless we're going to feed those bales right away.

What are your thoughts on possible new 25,000 cow dairy near Fargo? What’s the cost per cow to build a new dairy?
Good cows right now r going for $3300-$3800
25000 cows is a lot of cows under one roof, but I toured one of their farms 2 years ago and was impressed by how clean and organized it was. It's been a while since we built anything for milking cows but $7000/cow is in the ballpark.
Great video, what's your thoughts on Riverview moving in to ND how do you think it will affect the states dairy industry?
I think it's positive for the state's dairy industry. We need processing in the state for dairy farmers to have a place to sell their milk, processors will only come to the state if there are enough cows to support a processing plant.
Interesting that you measured the dry matter with a Koster tester. I thought you had a Bakhuis Droge stof tester from the Netherlands. I used a Koster tester for years, but have been using an air fryer for 3 years. It's the same principle, just quicker and cheaper. Greetings from Germany.

I wish we could keep our piles of silage this clean of rot We have issues with birds pecking holes in the plastic Do u have that issue? If yes how do u deal with it Thanks👍
We've had birds peck holes in the plastic before, but it's not really something we see a lot of.

Hi, I was talking about the food stored in the bunkers and once distributed, do you add acid to prevent the food from rising in temperature?
You did not address the costs of the various coverings and the covering procedures involved. Do you use a defacer? Why or why not?
When we cover our corn silage I'll cover the cost difference if I remember. We don't use a defacer, we deface with the grapple teeth on the bucket on our feeding payloader. We don't use a defacer because I feel we can do a good job with the grapple teeth and that saves a lot of time not having to deface prior to feeding. We deface silage as we're feeding, so we're only defacing what we need for the load we're mixing.
