You know, never thought I'd be back to mention how this song made it into a Hat in Time mod about the Declaration of Independence, but the context of it playing genuinely made me feel a bit melancholy? God, Another Light songs really do hit different these days huh...

That's actually how I discovered Red Vox, was through that Hat in Time mod (HKSTDOI: Golden Eye of the Shapeshifters). I was like 'huh, this song is really good. I wonder who wrote it?' and tried googling the lyrics I remembered but couldn't find anything, and then eventually found it in the mod credits on steam. Now I've heard the whole discography and I'm VERY excited for Visions release in twelve days!

I never really looked into the title of the song, but the phrase "Memento Mori" was brought up in my ethics class today as we discussed Epicurus and his thoughts of pains, pleasures, and death. Reading over the lyrics again its quite interesting. I find it relates quite well to Epicurus' resolve on death.
He figured since human life was concerned with sensation (pains and pleasures) and death was the deprivation of those things, then by definition death cannot cause pain, merely the anticipation does. So the inescapable should not be our concern as "So long as exist death is not with us; but when death comes, we do not exist". Granted there are a number of criticisms given for his argument, but the idea of being able to separate your life from your death I find is somewhat liberating, and perhaps gives more reason to stop procrastinating on things that matter.
Why wait? the reaper never does.

I know this is 4 yrs old but I wanted to say that it's strange how I get the entirely opposite view from the Phrase. As far I I recall, it was a phrase spoken to leaders of Rome to remind them that despite their success or glory, that they are mortal, and will one day die no matter what (because the phrase translates as "Remember, you must die"). This was done to hopefully temper them so that they wouldn't fall into delusions of grandeur. So I view it as a phrase of reminder that death is coming eventually, so you must not get ahead of yourself, and think yourself too important or invincible.

Have I been awake too long?
I'm taking this way too far
Have I been awake too long?
Then it hits me somewhere right between the eyes
'Cause I know the cost of time
And I've paid it all my life
Near or far, no matter how close you are
    Hopelessly, united in entropy
Could it be, the presence of memory
Is all we are, and all that we'll ever be?
Have I been awake too long?
I'm taking this way too far
Have I been awake too long?
And then I tell myself it's just so far away
Back to the old routine that fills my every day
Some pray the holy ghost will save them from the grave
But I know the cost of time
And I've paid it all my life

Playing this as I found out today that after 29 years, my family's Super Nintendo, one that I played and maintained for the last ten years, has finally given up the farm. That thing kept me sane during my shitty high school years, when few things ever did. I beat Super Mario World 100% on there. I won't throw it away - too many good memories. If I can't repair it, then I'll keep it as the centerpiece of my game systems, but for now...
So long, Super Nintendo. Thanks for all the memories.

This song is so important to me. For me and my girlfriend, it's pretty much our special song. We listened to it together, just before summer began and as I was introducing her to this band. She instantly fell in love with it. When she had gone away for a week on a family camping trip, I taught myself the song on piano and surprised her with a performance of it when she came back. I still play it for her sometimes, and we definitely still listen to the song together.
Thank you Vinny, Mike, Bill and Joe, Red Vox, for giving us such great music to appreciate and create memories with.

I'm learning guitar, and just now I was introduced to the term "feeling", I'm struggling to have this "feeling" in my guitar playing. But this song, this for me is the description of feeling. When the solo kicks in, plus the build up from the lyrics and even the album cover, its just amazing, even though the lyrics are quite depressing, the first solo gives me a feeling of a new light, a more positive outlook in life and that everything will get better... then the second solo comes in and just crushes all my expectations reminding me how harsh life truly is. Honestly, this song is a masterpiece for me
Edit: Probably a lot of you are musicians too, if anyone sees this comment, could you give me some hint on how to put my emotions in my guitar playing? I think I can play pretty well the songs I've learned, but it's like a machine is playing, just technique and no emotion

Another Light was an anomaly in the infancy of my Red Vox addiction. It was weird because for a while I was like yeah nah I don't really like Another Light too much because I would listen to Red Vox on Summer walks and I never really gave it the chance cause I only had the youtube full album to listen to because I didn't have spotify premium then, but then I was scrolling through the Red Vox youtube channel, saw In The Garden had an assload of views and was like "?" so I listened and actually ended up liking it a lot. I thought, alright, I'll listen to the entire album when I'm not really doing anything. I did, and, man is this album seriously fucking good. I'm So Happy opened my eyes to Nirvana, which opened my eyes to Radiohead, which opened my eyes to Weezer. I don't know too much about the guys, Vin, Mike, Joe, and Bill, but you all can make some seriously good music, and I respect and appreciate you for that. Flash forward about a year since when I first went all the way through the album, I had my first paycheck, and what do I decide to buy? the Another Light T-Shirt cause it was the only thing in 3x that would fit me so yeah, besides the vinyls, Another Light is the only merch item I own despite not considering it my favorite album. Maybe not this song specifically, Rub Your Eyes is a really good song that reminds me to keep pushing and to be a good person, to quite literally rub your eyes of the tears of today or yesterday because it could be worse, you could be shoveling shit to pay college loans, and to keep moving forward with life.

this is so goddamn good i wanna cry like. this fucks me up in a really good way!!! my brain chooses to see it as inherently optimistic, now mattet how weary and long the struggle eventually one can learn how to thread actual joy into the chaos of their being.

I think its the opposite. He sounds happy and delighted. He is just protending and making a facade, hiding his depression as he starts talking about all the shit on his mind. This entire song, if you look at the lyrics, is about existential dread. Life is nothing but the presence of memory, nothing more nothing less. Even the name Memento Mori is Latin for "Be aware of your Mortality".
Behind all the Ducknoises an screams is a man that questions the concept of life itself. Because thats all we are. Mortal Memories, bound to perish sooner or later.
And that way of thinking continues in the new single that came out, Ozzymandiaz. The song is based on a poem about a Antique King boasting about his eternal empire on a sign, a sign discovered by a researcher who finds nothing but ruins of this "eternal" empire.
Nothing lasts. Not you. Not your achievements. And not even peoples memories of you.

I know you don't need me to do this, Vincent...However, I'm gonna make sure that while my label is growing to be a larger beehive, every one of my friends and people who become a part of my movement know that you're a non mainstream artist who truly lives to liberate raw creativity and bring that oldschool vibe back. I'll get married with this track playing instead of your regular church organ just because of how much this artist means to not just me, but to the world.

Atom Bomb was one I heard for a while, and I really liked that one, but damn I love this song. Seeing and hearing stuff like this makes me just want to keep pushing myself to create something that feels worthwhile, even if it's just to me. Sometimes I just hate how I can never get the drive to make what I want to make.
