You know, never thought I'd be back to mention how this song made it into a Hat in Time mod about the Declaration of Independence, but the context of it playing genuinely made me feel a bit melancholy? God, Another Light songs really do hit different these days huh...
That's actually how I discovered Red Vox, was through that Hat in Time mod (HKSTDOI: Golden Eye of the Shapeshifters). I was like 'huh, this song is really good. I wonder who wrote it?' and tried googling the lyrics I remembered but couldn't find anything, and then eventually found it in the mod credits on steam. Now I've heard the whole discography and I'm VERY excited for Visions release in twelve days!
3:07 Never actually noticed it before, but you can just _faintly_ hear the chorus from 1:08 repeating in the echoed vocals in the background. Always a really nice feeling when you've listened to a song so many times that you start to find out new things about it.
I never really looked into the title of the song, but the phrase "Memento Mori" was brought up in my ethics class today as we discussed Epicurus and his thoughts of pains, pleasures, and death. Reading over the lyrics again its quite interesting. I find it relates quite well to Epicurus' resolve on death. He figured since human life was concerned with sensation (pains and pleasures) and death was the deprivation of those things, then by definition death cannot cause pain, merely the anticipation does. So the inescapable should not be our concern as "So long as exist death is not with us; but when death comes, we do not exist". Granted there are a number of criticisms given for his argument, but the idea of being able to separate your life from your death I find is somewhat liberating, and perhaps gives more reason to stop procrastinating on things that matter. Why wait? the reaper never does.
I know this is 4 yrs old but I wanted to say that it's strange how I get the entirely opposite view from the Phrase. As far I I recall, it was a phrase spoken to leaders of Rome to remind them that despite their success or glory, that they are mortal, and will one day die no matter what (because the phrase translates as "Remember, you must die"). This was done to hopefully temper them so that they wouldn't fall into delusions of grandeur. So I view it as a phrase of reminder that death is coming eventually, so you must not get ahead of yourself, and think yourself too important or invincible.
Have I been awake too long? I'm taking this way too far Have I been awake too long? Then it hits me somewhere right between the eyes 'Cause I know the cost of time And I've paid it all my life Near or far, no matter how close you are Hopelessly, united in entropy Could it be, the presence of memory Is all we are, and all that we'll ever be? Have I been awake too long? I'm taking this way too far Have I been awake too long? And then I tell myself it's just so far away Back to the old routine that fills my every day Some pray the holy ghost will save them from the grave But I know the cost of time And I've paid it all my life
Are you sure it's "some pray" instead of "so pray"? Tried slowing it down and listening as best as I could, sounds like the latter but I can't be absolutely certain
Playing this as I found out today that after 29 years, my family's Super Nintendo, one that I played and maintained for the last ten years, has finally given up the farm. That thing kept me sane during my shitty high school years, when few things ever did. I beat Super Mario World 100% on there. I won't throw it away - too many good memories. If I can't repair it, then I'll keep it as the centerpiece of my game systems, but for now... So long, Super Nintendo. Thanks for all the memories.
This song is so important to me. For me and my girlfriend, it's pretty much our special song. We listened to it together, just before summer began and as I was introducing her to this band. She instantly fell in love with it. When she had gone away for a week on a family camping trip, I taught myself the song on piano and surprised her with a performance of it when she came back. I still play it for her sometimes, and we definitely still listen to the song together. Thank you Vinny, Mike, Bill and Joe, Red Vox, for giving us such great music to appreciate and create memories with.
This is without a doubt my favourite song, the fact that you keep the same melody though the whole song is a very nice touch that makes it very memorable but not annoying. Keep up the great work Red Vox.

I can relate. I suffer from severe depression, and music is one of the only things that helps me get through the day. Even if it only lasts a little bit, it helps.
Ok I'll be honest, at 2:04 I thought he was saying "Back to the Ovaltine that fills my every day" like it was some reference to Vin's/The Person's childhood or something like that. I realize now that's stupid but I still can't unhear it.
Was listening to this song when I found out a high school buddy of mine took his own life. Had a long drive ahead of me, and I cried to this song but it sort of put things at peace and made me think that we are all part of a larger ecosystem. Thanks for the good vibes @Red Vox.
I know this song seems to strike a similar feeling in lots of people but, man, it's crazy how much it taps into a fear I've had for so many years. Really bittersweet feelings listening to this one, it's beautiful in a melancholy, haunting sort of way. It even feels happy in tone at some points, which plays into that. I love this song, and I'd love to hear the mindset they had when writing it.
From 2:26 to the end of the song, this part is SO good! Not that the rest of the song isn't, it just seems like a perfect climax. Love this song, has some very interesting vibes.

This song has meant a lot of different things to me over the years, but after my father passed away a few days ago, this song has been on my mind constantly again. Thanks for all the great sounds, Red Vox crew. Glad I have things like this during the toughest times.
Vinny's vocals have improved so much in this album and it's really impressive. This track in particular is incredible in every sense. Def my favorite on the album! ♡ great job guys!

Bro I heard this in the background of a Failboat stream, paused it, and spent the next half an hour trying to figure find the song. I could not. Couple of minutes after I unpaused, and someone in chat had Daniel say it out loud.
I know you guys get stuff like this so much. But this song resonates with me so much. It’s a song that no matter what happens in my life I can fall back on it and feel kind of a melancholy feeling. It just makes me feel good. And not many songs can do that even though my tastes are endless. Yeah. I came because of Vinny. But I stayed because everyone here has something that really works. I'm learning guitar, and just now I was introduced to the term "feeling", I'm struggling to have this "feeling" in my guitar playing. But this song, this for me is the description of feeling. When the solo kicks in, plus the build up from the lyrics and even the album cover, its just amazing, even though the lyrics are quite depressing, the first solo gives me a feeling of a new light, a more positive outlook in life and that everything will get better... then the second solo comes in and just crushes all my expectations reminding me how harsh life truly is. Honestly, this song is a masterpiece for me Edit: Probably a lot of you are musicians too, if anyone sees this comment, could you give me some hint on how to put my emotions in my guitar playing? I think I can play pretty well the songs I've learned, but it's like a machine is playing, just technique and no emotion
just pretend you're the person you're covering until you've found your own thing. sounds crazy and you'll feel stupid at first, but then everything starts to flow (at least for me). either that or you can think of the things that have made you happiest/most sad/etc while you're playing/singing a relative 'feeling', and it all falls into place :)
Playing with feeling comes from inside; its the soul inside you. You'll eventually feel, as you play, like your soul leaves your body and you experience yourself as your audience. Its almost like a trance state; you'll feel every note you play.

this is so goddamn good i wanna cry like. this fucks me up in a really good way!!! my brain chooses to see it as inherently optimistic, now mattet how weary and long the struggle eventually one can learn how to thread actual joy into the chaos of their being.
I think its the opposite. He sounds happy and delighted. He is just protending and making a facade, hiding his depression as he starts talking about all the shit on his mind. This entire song, if you look at the lyrics, is about existential dread. Life is nothing but the presence of memory, nothing more nothing less. Even the name Memento Mori is Latin for "Be aware of your Mortality". Behind all the Ducknoises an screams is a man that questions the concept of life itself. Because thats all we are. Mortal Memories, bound to perish sooner or later. And that way of thinking continues in the new single that came out, Ozzymandiaz. The song is based on a poem about a Antique King boasting about his eternal empire on a sign, a sign discovered by a researcher who finds nothing but ruins of this "eternal" empire. Nothing lasts. Not you. Not your achievements. And not even peoples memories of you.
I know you don't need me to do this, Vincent...However, I'm gonna make sure that while my label is growing to be a larger beehive, every one of my friends and people who become a part of my movement know that you're a non mainstream artist who truly lives to liberate raw creativity and bring that oldschool vibe back. I'll get married with this track playing instead of your regular church organ just because of how much this artist means to not just me, but to the world.
Atom Bomb was one I heard for a while, and I really liked that one, but damn I love this song. Seeing and hearing stuff like this makes me just want to keep pushing myself to create something that feels worthwhile, even if it's just to me. Sometimes I just hate how I can never get the drive to make what I want to make.

this is so goddamn good i wanna cry like. this fucks me up in a really good way!!! my brain chooses to see it as inherently optimistic, now mattet how weary and long the struggle eventually one can learn how to thread actual joy into the chaos of their being.
1:08 Not that the intro is bad, but it really kicks off here.
This appears to be a song I have been looking for for quite a while, thank you Vinny
God damn this track is a 10/10. Way to fucking go mate.
Really love the vocals in this
So god damn good. I love you Red Vox. I love you Vinny. Please make more.
I just noticed the "NEAR OR FAR/NO MATTER HOW CLOSE YOU ARE" bits are very very similar to the shop theme in Ocarina of Time.
the melody in this is so calming and beautiful, i love this album vinny
Istg Vinny’s voice in the beginning 😫💕
One of the best songs on the album in my opinion
I really love this song and it's bag pipe doots at the end.
Your album is the coconut cream in my pie
shower me my dude
Just beautiful. Leaves me with chills every time.
When the ending sounds just like Blackstar, a song by Bowie about him dying, and the song is about dying too
hmmst
Hopelessly united in Entropy gets me every time
Even if you don't like Vinny how tf can you not like this song? This album was on point my dudes. "There She Goes" and "Atom Bomb" are also great!
Vin's got every avenue covered for me. Those being good music and shitty memes. Love ya buddy
"I know the cost of time, and I've paid it all my life"
That line is soooo good!
Greatest song in the greatest red vox album
I faintly hear some Long Lonely Night and Ghost Page in this
I don't know what this song means but I relate to it.
Mark Koch It's about a guy who's having an existential crisis
i always interpreted it as being vinny's own musings on mortality
1:08 Perfection
After listening to this song with headphones, I just noticed that you can hear the vocals in the background at 3:07
Feels like I've known this song my whole life, yet this is my first time hearing it; and no, before you say it, that's not a bad thing. 10/10 song mates.
Absolutely amazing! Seriously! I admit while I liked the older stuff, I didn't listen to it a crazy amount- it was good, but as someone w ho listens to music all day I didn't find myself listening to it a lot- ive listened to you guys with this one almost all damn day for days. AMAZING job, amazing improvement- thank you for the wonderful music! I'll pick up the album asap!
I could sit in that harmony at the end of the song for an hour...
This whole album is filled to the brim with talent. I admire this song very much
Did anyone else hear a bit that sounded like ghost page at 3:50?
there's also a little bit around 3:00! i love that little detail so much holy shit
Two of their best songs rhyme
Honestly one of my fav songs ever
This and "Memories Lie" are the 2 best songs on the album.
this song reminds me of staying up too late at late and thinking too deeply about life/the universe/etc
"Could it be the premise of memory is all we are and all that we'll ever be"
WOO BABY fuck me up
this was the first song I heard from you guys and has been my favorite ever since... I love it so much
👏👏👏 The clapping in this song is so infectious 👏👏👏
God would I love to see them play this one live
This might be one of my new favorite songs omg
I was looking up 1800s photos and found a BBC article about this type of photography that family's at that time used to do about a dead loved one or something
