      Colleges and sometimes parents are largely to blame. These 18 year olds are told by everyone that they need to go to college and are assured that they can get a good job afterwards. There are "advisors" who help them pick classes and so forth, but half the time they are no help at all. I had a friend who was in the masters program with me and as it turns out, no one told him he had to major in a hard science to get into dental school, so he majored in history and minored in chemistry. After he graduated he discovered that he needed a science major for dental school, so he was forced to get a master's in chemistry just to get in. An advisor didn't give him good advice, and as a result he was forced to spend two extra years in college and waste about $22 k (our college did not waive tuition for masters degrees as some do). One of my old professors told us he didn't know that you don't need a master's degree before going into a PhD program, so he ended up getting a master's and a PhD because of that oversight. A lot of people I know are first generation college students, so parents have no idea how to navigate college choices, etc with their children. When I started teaching college I made it a point to explain career options in my field (chemistry) so they would know what's out there and what they have to do to get there. I think the colleges keep this information vague on purpose. Ultimately they're a business, and if they keep students there longer, profits increase.

    Most universities have a degree path where you can create your own. I had to do it while in university because they didn't have the program I wanted but I was allowed to combine two existing diploma pathways into a new one. I wanted to study Evolutionary Psychology but they didn't have it. So I mashed Psychology with Evolutionary Biology to create the same thing. Five years later it was being offered as a degree option. I now have a high-paying job where I work with homeless veterans, and as a veteran myself I'm glad I was able to create my own degree path. I had to get administrators to approve, my GI Bill and advisors... so if these kids are having to do the same I do not see the problem. Most degrees are worthless anyway.

    • @jennyjones3985
      @jennyjones3985 3 місяці тому +3

      I don't have a problem with having a vision and forging a path toward it. You showed some initiative to do what you did. The problem now is that kids with no idea what they want are given carte blanche to do what "feels good" with no goal or initiative involved in the process, and most of them will not be able to figure out a career path related to what they studied. Some of them will grow up when faced with the real world and find a path. Too many will not.

    This is why I laughed so hard at Bill Burr's:
    "I'm on the side of the kids!"
    Bit. You're NOT supposed to be *on your kid's side* as a parent. You're supposed to *look out for* your kid.
    Being "on their side" means backing them up in all their decisions. And kids are literally incapable of making good decisions on their own. They haven't been alive long enough to know anything.
    So when you make a point of being "on their side"?
    This is what ya get.

If they have a hard time in the future, they can blame their choices - just like we've all made choices we regret. It's not the system, it's them.
