"I want to live in a society where children are taught how to think and not just what to think..." Bingo. This is the difference between education and indoctrination.
I think religion should always be taught, but taught as fiction or legend, like Greek or Roman mythology. Religion is a part of culture and a culturally diverse world needs to appreciate the views and beliefs of past and present religions. But children must always be allowed to make their own choices about what they want to believe. If a child wants to be religious then fair enough.
God is not a myth, he is real. So you should never teach it like a myth. If you're an athiest, than you shouldn't teach it to your child, let you kid go out to the world and learn about it themselves. Let them make the decision. If you treat it like it's fake, then they will believe it is fake, that's not letting the kid believe what they want at all.
@@fuzzydorito6105 nobody is teaching their children how to be an atheist. But everybody HAS to teach their children that they have an option. Most religious people i see do not give their children an option and only teach them to see only the same religion. Any other religion is not worth talking about, cause theyre all 'wrong'.
Gamaliel I don't know who you've met. And I'm certain there are religious people out there who are like that. But almost all of the religious people I meet aren't like that. Well, yes they do encourage that their kids stay in that church when they're older, but that's just normal. Most atheists encourage their kids to stay an atheist as well. Now, if the children don't want to stay in the church, I think they should wait until they're 18 (unless they are an atheist's house). Since they're still young and growing. Also, if they live under their parent's roof, they need to accept the fact that they need to respect their parent's wishes until they are old enough to think for themselves.
As a child, I'd often cry a lot because I was so scared of going to hell. And the teachers made it worse when they described how we'll get tortured eternally there. Keep in mind that I was a CHILD and I was too sensitive at that time. I felt really guilty all the time for not praying or for stealing that bottle of glitter. I even got nightmares because they told us there were jins (kinda like demons) every where especially at night and in the bathrooms. That's how I have an irrational fear of darkness up until now I'm still afraid of the dark, even after I stopped believing in those stuff. A religion that's supposed to be all loving and caring gave me a fucking phobia. Just how ironic is that?
being Jewish is awesome. We don't believe in hell or Satan LoL were also not an evangelistic religiin unlike half of the Christian branches that like to shove it intonpeoples faces.
+GodsChild Jesuslove this is sad. I'm Jewish and am j convinced. G-d told us that th Messiah Will literally bring forth a kingdom. Jesus didn't bring a kingdom and is therefore not the messiah. He's a bastard born from some Whore. Also if G-d created everything, there is evidently a nothing before that then. whi created th nothing? You're a madman. Jesus isn't the messiah and you're all living a lie. G-d would be ashamed of you Tbh. Following some fake one claiming to be the Lords son, the messiah. Smh. anyway Judaistic beliefs aside you're wasting your time here and you're being offensive. Its one thing to believe your own religion but its another to.imply superiority over tours because they're not of your faith. It's quite insulting for you to say what someone's past is. You have no right to tell another what their life has been (as shown by your "that was not faith"). let us look at the definition of Faith kid. "Complete trust or confidence in someone or something". or "Strong belief in G-d OR in the doctrines of a religion." Stop Being such a Nazi and making your fellow Christians look bad with your idiocy. You're truly a disgrace to our G-d. Jews r beast ur argument is invalid.
Great video. When I was a kid I had no choice but to go to Hebrew School for 4 years and then get Bar Mitzvahed. My mom wouldn't take no for an answer, no matter how much I pleaded with her. I had to go Tuesdays and Thursdays after regular school and one day of the weekend. Most of my friends were not Jewish, so while they were out having fun, I was trapped in sheer misery in subject matter that I despised. To make matters worse, my older sister never had to go, since most Jewish girls don't. My mom wasn't involved in the temple herself and was not very religious, so I didn't know why it was so important to her that I go. I didn't find out until many years later that I had to go because that's what my very religious grandfather, her father, who was never close to me, wanted. I felt completely used and unimportant. So what you said about losing a bond with your parents later on was very true in my case.
2 main reasons why most people remain religious. 1. The long for eternal the reward. And 2. The fear of the eternal punishment. The bad part is the harm they do to themselves and others because of the fairy tale.
And what harm is that? If you don't believe in anything, then nothing is really harmful nor helpful, is there? To me, nihilism is much more harmful, because you've lived your life for not. But then again, if you're living your life, then obviously have some sort of structured belief, and you're likely just projecting one thing and believing another, which is what I think is true for most "atheists".
I'm 14 years old and I was raised a Christian since my whole family is. I have been an atheist for about a year and I'm glad I made that choice. The only real reason I held on to Christianity so long was because of the guilt and fear that Christianity brought to me. Even when I was about 7 years old when I started really getting exposed to Christianity I questioned it a lot. I used to think "if everything was created at once, wouldn't Adam and Eve be living with dinosaurs? " and " if the bible says killing is wrong, then why did god kill millions of people?" Becoming an atheist really has helped me especially with my anxiety that I was feeling from the pressure of Christianity.
+drummingdyl "The only real reason I held on to Christianity so long was because of the guilt and fear that Christianity brought to me." that's awful. I'm glad you have released the pressure of Christianity :-).
young man, there is no Christian doctrine that teaches Adam & eve and everything else was created all at once. all religion is flawed the individual is intended to perfect that religion. I would suggest that you look up the word "discernment" and live by that. may I ask what foundation for your ethical compass within society. can you related it to another person in a sentence or two.
When I was younger I would ask my grandma all sorts of questions about God, and when she didn't have an answer she would say "Won't it be fun to ask God in heaven?" I used to dream about dying because it meant I could see God and talk to him. THAT IS NOT HEALTHY. Little kids shouldn't want to die!
Yes thats bad. But not all religions state that. Other religions like the SDA state that you should live your life for god and that suicide is a waste of what god had planned for your future success because they do not believe that ppl go to heaven when we die, rather we go when the lord comes to heaven.
@@gabrielaleon9087 I had similar thoughts when I was a little kid and believed in God. But I was afraid if I tried to do that, I might end up going to Hell for some reason I wouldn't have known.
***** excuse me, but this comment was a long time ago. I'm not reading any of it due to the fact its what every Christian person said in the comments I read long ago. Besides, this channel are for atheists and for Christians that are questioning Christianity. I don't need your preaching, and don't think every athiest thinks that there is no afterlife, I believe you are born again (like your soul is recycled). So please, don't waste your time commenting these beliefs on an atheists channel, all it will do is make you look bad.
***** there's no reason to let embarrassment to stop them from knowing the truth. maybe about things like sex and what not, at least wait until they're teenagers. but tell them the truth if you want them to.
You need to mess with your kids though. Telling your kid that Santa exists is just for fun. They I'll know in due time that it's all bullshit anyway, though I wish I could say the same thing about religion.
that's what people say before they tell great fairy tales about flying dragons and four armed mutants who throw lightning bolts and men who walk on water in ugly sandals and snakes that talk and boats that were built with slave labor to sail across the seas with thousands of animals only to find there was a guy down the street who lives in a two bedroom flat that could part the seas the whole time!! Just keep an open mind ;)
Yeah be open minded, and believe that thousands of kilometres away, in the middle of a desert, there was an Aramaic speaking guy called Eashoa who was the son of God and you should submit to him.
Christianity is void of any actual morality...unless you want to claim charitable work of which you don't need religion for that. Real morality isn't shaming people for what consensual sex they are having, real morality is speaking out against unjust wars, demanding a living wage for the working poor, speaking out against discrimination (AKA... religious freedom), etc.
Sex is a sacred act to some, for good reason. Marriage is morally based and safe. Random sex is very dangerous, to you and society. God is looking out for our best interests.
Alan W Mankind is weak. You must maintain your faith in God or become weak and fail your purpose. No one is perfect. We all fail every once and a while. The key is to accept your failure and correct it and move onward, ever stronger.
Alan W It's working for me, because I am sincere in my heart and am loyal to God. You have to take morality very seriously. You have to become the very definition of righteousness. You have to be the example. Amen!
I am 12 and I used to be a Christian a year back. I stopped being a Christian after I realized I was only doing it for my aunt, and that I actually couldn't bring myself to believe what I was hearing. Alot of my Christian friends and family are not happy that I am athiest, and its hard for me. I recently started watching your videos and I can't really relate to them and your videos give me tons of reason and inspiration. so, thank you for your videos. they have really helped me. keep posting 👏 +The Atheist Voice
Savanna Wix I can totally understand no one should believe something to please someone. The reason I am a Christian is because I have heard and studied the Bible and have found it to be true. No one forced me it was my own choice. I can see the difference in believing in god rather than not. At my work place people constantly swear and make dirty and inappropriate jokes. Most of them are said from people who have told me there atheist or just don’t believe in god or Jesus. I my self am not perfect but I strive to do my best to be good. God seats he will bless us if we follow his ways witch are very simple. As a Christian I do my best to be a light by not swearing or talking dirty and taking a stand for what’s right. I care about you and don’t want see you make a wrong decision. I’m not here to think for you or force you to believe in god but just share with you the joy I found in Christ and tell you he is the true way.
I'm a parent of two great kids. I love them more than air. I am also an atheist. They make great grades in school. They have wonderful personalities. They don't have to deal with religious indoctrination like I did. We are moral and caring. So...take that religion.
Or at least not so heavily religion-centric. Which is a good thing. People in developing countries tend to believe that religion can solve everything. Some of them still take their sick friends to a religious expert for fucks sake. Just believe that satan is causing your flu and let this holy water heal you.

how do people dislike this? I mean... These are some hard rational arguments... If you dislike this video based on that, you should really start looking at yourself and your hold beliefs..
Because god of course, Catholicsm is the religion I was brought up with therefore it MUST be true, on the real note though I was brought up a catholic but it didn't take being less gullible then most people at the age of 9-10 to know that it was all a bullshit, I feel bad for the people who so blindly follow religion because its all they know, If you're raised to become a terrorist and you're elders told you over and over again killing innocent is "gods will" of course they're going to believe you. This is how the problem starts, personally I think people who force their religion upon children should be put to death, its no better\worse then rape/murder etc, it's child abuse but unfortunately the world doesn't see it like that, however the world also believed that slavery was okay. it shouldn't take anyone smarter then a box of fucking rocks to know that's NOT okay. but we live in a FUCKED up world and nothing will change...
Poseidon63 I think teaching them why people things they do, because of religion will bring better insight on the decisions the child makes in the future. There is a difference in teaching religion.and teaching OF religion.
Karen Diaz you can have insight to you decisions without religion. I know that if I harm someone, that I am in the wrong. I know if I steal a car, that there are consequences for my actions. You don't need religion to see that.
I was raised Mormon and man it really messed me up. I was literally going through psychological torture and guilt when I was a young teen. Once I left and realized I wasn’t bounded by religion, I started pursuing my dreams of becoming a rapper.
Yes, you're right, I worried that Christianity teach wrong about love to our children, and they also brainwashed by it, they will cause horrible effect to our world, and they'll think what they do is right because they think this is love.
I'm rather young now and don't have kids, but my idea of raising up kids in regards to religion would be to just not shove it in his face. Let him grow up and look around, and see the world for what it is. Then, when he's interested and curious as to what religion is, I hand him the Bible, I hand him the Qur'an, I hand him the God's Delusion, and I let him read them and develop his own opinions,
If I had children, I'd sit them down one day and tell them that lots of people believe that there's an invisible 3-in-1 sky being that spawned itself through a virgin so that it could forgive humanity by killing itself for the weekend and then ask them if that makes any sense whatsoever.
I did sit my child down for that talk. It is a constant battle to remind him of the tricks and techniques Christians (or any religion) will use to persuade them. He's been called a "gay" and a Satanist already.
MezzaBenoch Not at all bullied beyond "normal" high school rhetoric. Thanks for your concern though. I've met more compassionate and caring atheists on Google than I ever had Christians for the 30 years I was one.
And your children would burst out laughing hysterically and think those people are insane! You would then have to explain to them that these people actually believe in a book that was written over the span of hundreds of years by many different people and how they actuallytake it very seriously to the point where if you disagree with them they will think that you are a terrible person.
I am muslim and i am sooo proud and satisfy however religoins shoudnt be tought at schools cuz everybody is free to think or believe whatever they want
I actually did try to raise my child as a Christian. Funnily enough, that's one of the many reasons I became an Atheist. My litle baby girl and I were reading the story of Baby Jesus, Herodes and the like. I had already told her about how good and loving God was. But when we got to the part where Herodes ordered the butchering of infants, she looked at me in horror and said: 'But..isn't God all-powerful? Did he let him kill all the babies?" Reluctantly, I did say yes. She began to cry and said: 'I don't like God, dad! God is mean! He let him kill babies!" It hit me pretty hard, but she was right. It got worse when she learned that God actively went on random genocides himself, to the point where she said: "I will make God say sorry and make him nice!" It was..quite the thing, really. Adorable, to say the least.
Fiend Matador Slayer of a Thousand Noobs it’s wrong if god doesn’t stop the killing of babies but it’s right for planned parenthood to kill millions of babies.
It was Herods own volition to execute the babies because he wanted to kill baby Jesus. I think it had to do with the fact that God didn't want to interfere with the free will of humans, but I personally find that reason to be questionable and inadequate because sometimes intervention is needed if it means innocent lives are about to be butchered, regardless if all babies go to heaven.
@@CRYSTAL_CUSTOMS Ok. So only people who are taught something you don't believe are brainwashed. By that logic you're brainwashed because I don't believe your worldview.
@@Malhaloci honestly think atheism is a doctrine devoid of as much lack of reasoning as forced religion. I think the real question parents should ask their children is to question whether God exists.
@alaudaeltia9981 Good. I agree. And do you believe that the children should be presented with the evidence of God or should it they stay in agnosticism, eternally questioning, but never really seeking? Because that's the problem with agnosticism. At some point, your just worshipping the search.
Always remember to teach your children about a imaginary being, without evidence. Sacrifice the mental, emotional, and physical well being of your child for your preference in religion. Religion is excellent material for keeping the common person from thinking logically.
I went to a christian primary school and i hated it. Once i asked my R.E/E.P.R teacher "if god created everything then who created god?" she said "dont ask stupid questions" and then she made me clean everyone elses things away
That's the truest thing I've ever heard. I'm a Wiccan, and my wife is Christian, but when I heard you I agreed wholeheartedly. Kudos to you man, good job!!
I'm having a difficult time trying to figure out how to address religion honestly with my kid, while having religious relatives that I'm fond of. I pretty much imagined a sitcom style scenario where my future 5 year old hears the word "Jeesus" and says to Grandma, "Oh yeah mommy told me that you guys think there's this guy called God that made up everything himself.... but we don't believe in that, it sounds really silly." /cue laugh track as I do a spit take with my water /fade to black Either that, or religious family members "teaching" my kid about Jeesus before I ever talk to him about it. I'd have to undo it all without sounding like an asshole. Even tho it's kinda dickish to teach someone else's kid religion, but that's family amirite?
Do what my parents did and wait until I'm about ten, them bombard me with many religions and atheism, my parents then said to go away and decide what I was...I turned agnostic until I read the bible, which made me an atheist.
It's amazing how some of us are able to break through the bs of religion, despite all the brainwashing at an early age, and yet others are too far "gone", and there is no argument in the world that can convince those people. I tried to argue with my mom about said brainwashing but it was like talking to a tree-total dismissal.
When I was a child I was afraid of god..When I accidentally sweared, not even that bad words,or even when I thought about something bad while im church,I panicked and started crying because I was afraid that god would punish me..Religion is dumb
The line about give the children a cheat sheet to the math test is the same problem our law system is suffering from. Forcing "justice" to be carried out when they don't know WHY the law was made. There is a gray area that has caused a lot of suffering through out U.S. history.
My parents were glad that their 9 year old was reading the bible front to back and interpreting it. Little did they know; "The best cure for Christianity is the bible" - Mark Twain
I am an atheist, but I do plan to teach my kid(s) about religions (note the plural) in order to understand the perspectives from different cultures. I think if you don't understand someone else's religion, then you miss out a big part of understanding their culture. And learning about different human cultures is obviously important. Also - when i teach about religion, i wouldn't teach it like ti's true. I would just state it as what it states, and then ask my kid "does this make sense to you?" This would teach my kid to develop critical thinking. I think it's equally dangerous to teach your kid that "there is no god, jesus is not a god" versus saying "ok, there is this one book which teaches that jesus is a god, what do u think? do u believe? why or why not?"
In glad for the Internet and UA-cam, so kids can learn the real truth of a fairytale being in the sky....please do more videos like this and spread the word, so that kids will not listen to their religious nut parents! I love this!
Wooo…. Number 4 though 😮💨 Working through the consequences of this one in my childhood now. Critical thinking and curiosity are two of my favorite things. Great video

I wanted so badly to tell my ex's children the truth about santa and other things but you know, they wasn't mine, so I had to disregard my beliefs and let them find their own way, but having good morals is a definite value, thanks for this video man
While I am a huge atheist, (I would go so far as to say that the idea of religion is ridiculous) and I agree with many of the points in this video, I still think that teaching children about religion is a good idea. I believe that it will make much more rounded individuals if children are brought up to understand the religions of others. If we stop teaching religion, it won't make religion go away and so teaching children about the beliefs of the people they will meet will help them to empathise better with others and be less prejudice towards others.
I remember when me and my brother were younger one of our cousin's was going to be baptised so their bother and sister went to sunday school. We asked could we go and everyone was fine with that. But it didn't take long before we were asked not to attend any more. This is because me and my brother wouldn't stop asking questions they couldn't answer. It was at this point that i knew all religion was made up to control the weak minded who need reassurances about things like what happens when you die.
Currently writing an argumentative essay I'm calling "Religion; and the Mass Indoctrination of Children" and this has proven very helpful for getting some thoughts going, so thank you.
Thank you so much for this video. I was raised a Jehovahs witness and I realised it was as you said a bunch of bad answers to good questions and ultimately circular arguments (if you have faith you won't question you'll just believe but we welcome questions). I was heavily discouraged from going to Uni and it's at that point I realised that they were afraid that I'd be confronted by critical thinking and apply it to the 'truth' I'd been raised in. It controls ppl by making sure all your friends are in the organisation and you'll be lonely once you make the choice to leave. Anyway I had my first child this year and although it's super early I've decided to keep him away from all the illogical thinking and mind control by threat of expulsion. Keep the videos coming! They're very much appreciated.
I'm Agnostic but this guy has great points. What I'd do if I had children is let them learn about all religions and scientific perspectives objectively and open-mindedly, and then make up their own mind.
I live in a Catholic country. I'm a teenager who doesn't believe in God and I finally managed to make my mum sign a document which would let me not to go on RE lessons. You see, in England during RE you study different religions and it sounds lovely to me, I'd love to study that too but unfortunately, in my country it's different. In my country on RE you do nothing but worship Jesus and talk about how we should feel blessed and obey him. Most of the 'teachers' (3/4 of them are nuns) are acting like a bunch of fanatics, honestly. One day in my class we wanted to discuss the influence of the church on politics but then the nun just yelled at us that we should stop talking about this. She also tried to make us think that the only happiness that is real is a happiness to be a Christian. The other situations that make us happy aren't making us so in fact (which is a total bullshit if you ask me). The worst thing is that it is a taboo. Our class decided to ask a few teachers to tell what they think of her 'theories'. They either brushed us off or said that it's inappropriate to say their opinion. What is more, my mother is ashamed of that I'm not attending RE. I've been fighting with her 2 years. But the best thing is- she isn't religious really. Weird, huh? I think so too but in my country, when she was younger, everyone used to be religious and if somebody wasn't, he or she was treated like a lowlife. But the times change! And she just wouldn't understand that. Fortunately, I managed to make her let me not to attend RE but I just pity students in my class who weren't as lucky as I was. Yes, most of them don't even believe in God, they are forced by their parents to go to RE. This situation is just mind-blowing... (How I wish my mother could speak English, I'd show her this video)
You do not have proof of atheism, because atheism is the refusal to believe something without proof. That's the beginning and the end of the conversation. You're fighting a losing battle with a strong believer, because if they were interested in rationality they'd already be an atheist - a perfectly sensible and reasonable position that states that it is irrational to believing in something before its existence has been proven. If you're really interested in genuinely arguing with theists - with the view to maybe getting them to think about their own beliefs, read up on Epistemology. I'm in England too; RE was taught in the same way as Greek mythology. It never occurred to me until *much* later that Noah's Ark was, in the eyes of some people, any different to Perseus and the Minotaur; a nebulous story that doesn't stand up to scrutiny and, at best, makes for a fun cartoon on Sunday morning... :D
There was a study saying that children that grew up with religion had a hard time with telling what fictional stories were true. They read these stories to them, and then asked which stories were real, and the ones taught religion thought way more were true, but the kids without religion were skeptical and thought way less were true.
To be honest, I may be Christian, but listening to Atheist views is so interesting in my opinion...since I already know the views of my own Christian people, I like listening to what people on the other side of the fence think.
My son once ask me if it was true that I am an atheist, even though that I always go to mass with my family every Sunday. I told him that I am and that the only reason why I go to church with them is to appease his mom. Then I later explained to him why a former member of Knights of Columbus end up as such. He pondered on my statements. He later said that he will still remain a Christian, and that me being an atheist is not such a big deal. That the important thing is that I love my family and is basically a good person (though I can be an A hole from time to time).
yussuq madiq you should also ask your son why he believes in a God, specifically why a Christian God in particular. Get him to think about the evidence behind it.
Sean Armstrong I was really tempted to ask that. But I am not really comfortable discussing (and end up having a debate) with my family. But I did advise him to examine what he believe in.
This video made me think of the time when I was a kid and how I wasn't allowed to have any "imaginary friends" because my parents told me that Jesus was the only invisible friend I was allowed to have. Well, that definitely worked out in their favor. Jesus isn't even my imaginary friend anymore
A lot of this is aimed at Catholic, Jewish, Muslim religion. The older i have gotten the more i find Hindi and Buddhist values to be true. And Santa is real, you just have to expand your understanding of him the older you get, like most things in life. A little kid can understand a man in a red suit and as they get older they will understand philanthropy and the joy of giving to those in need.
My history teacher is a really smart guy. Whenever we talk about historical topics we end up talking about politics and sometimes controversial topics. He rarely ever gives out his opinion, because he knows as a teacher he has an impact on us and he didn't want to influence us. He always gives us facts and statistics about those topics, but he never gives out a bias.
I need some help, so my dad and "Bubbe"(grandmother in Yiddish) are trying to make my brothers(8 & 6) go to Jewish school and all that jazz and of course, they're happy, I mean they get super excited about learning anything but this is different.. right? I mean shouldn't people decide their religion for themselves? That's what I got to do and I'm really glad it happened that way. What do you think?
I agree you should be aloud to choose your own religion and belief. My parents made me go to catholic classes and schools but I'm actually more of a Buddhist now. I'm not an atheist I'm a Buddhist more or less and I chose that on my own. The problem is is that kids can't choose what they wanna do if they aren't educated on there options. Say the kid is only taught science and he knows all this science stuff and then he's told religion is a thing. That's not a fair choice I think they should be taught on all topics so then they can choose for them selves.
+Mekiko Senpai Well,as long they dont get any harms, why not? But an Arab girl in my old School wanted my help because her father forced her to go to a Muslim school and she must wear a headscarf and thats a very big problem.
+Mekiko Senpai I went to a Yeshiva. I can't say it was horrible. You learn a lot about the Jewish culture and customs. It's a lot more about that, than religion. And Judaism is rather speculative and exploratory when it comes to morals. Not sure about the school your brothers are going to, but Adonai in mine, wasn't a centralist theme. It was more of a footnote. I don't like the idea of indoctrination, but these are your brothers, and unfortunately... Indoctrination has not been properly classified as mental child abuse yet. Give it time, maybe one day.
+Jacob Sqautch I already have to avoid visiting my little sister because of religion. I don't want to end up going to church ever again. I don't want it on my side of the family.
+Jacob Sqautch Are you completely incompetent. The Torah is the Old Testament. Christianity is evolved Judaism based upon Jesus being a universal sacrifice. That's just an insult asking that question. Jews believe in G-d what the fuck do you know nothing of the Jews?
Man, this hits me pretty hard. I grew up in a very religious Christian Protestant/Baptist family but funnily enough stopped after my siblings & I became adults. We no longer attend church, pray, or mention anything religious anymore. Thank goodness! My oldest sister however has had 3 kids & has started indoctrinating in a similar manner as to how we were as kids. I feel kind of bad for her because I feel like she needed to do that because it was the only way she knew how to raise children, but I haven't told her that these are my thoughts on that, nor do I know if I ever should. This is one of the reasons why I don't want to have children though, although deep down inside I believe I actually do want to but there's many others reasons why I don't want to.
I'd love to see a video on the status quo regarding the separation of church and state: which countries are strictly secular, which ones sort of, which countries are theocracies, etc.

I am only 18. So I don't know much about raising kids. But I think there is a difference between teaching kids religion and raising them religious. I don't think they should be told to be religious. But raising them in a religious environment( not a stiff and unquestionable) will be better for them to understand that religion. I was raised in Hinduism by my parents. But they never objected me about questioning religious beliefs. As a result I have developed a better understanding of my religion than a person who was never exposed to it. So I have accepted good parts of my religion and rejected bad ones. I understand that while there are many illogical things in Hinduism, there are many scientific ones to. If I were an outsider, I would have judged it through a single lense. So I think it is good to teach children about religion but being open to questions. Besides if I weren't raised in my religion, I would have missed all the fun festivals that I enjoyed so much as a child and still do.
Well yes, raising them in a religious environment helps them better to understand that religion, same as torturing them helps them understand torture. Both ends up harming the child.
I'm 19 and I think , Instead of teaching children religion , I would teach them science , philosophy and show him biographies of good and bad people . Let him grow morally and logically. Them have him read all the religious books and let him decide if he prefers religion. As for festival , you don't need to be religious to enjoy festivals. I play Diwali even though I'm an atheist and hated Holi even when I was religious.
Wow .thanks for your telling the truth. This is why I left Christianity around 20 years but now I'm atheist. Then still going to a church even though I said to myself it's a boring for every Sunday. And yet I'd never tell to my parents especially from my whole family that I'm atheist. 😭😭😭 . I hope many atheist people should reply my commenting .
Great points. I'd like to add the warped view it creates about people who don't believe or those of other faiths. When my agnostic kids reveal their lack of belief they are often met with the idea that they are "evil" or the condescending "need to be saved."
I plan on majoring in Classical studies, so hell yeah I'm gonna teach my kids about religion. Mythology is fascinating and can reveal so much about cultures that they won't outright say.
My friends are enforcing their relgion onto me, and I’m trying to say in the nicest way that I’m an atheist and I don’t want to hear what u have to say. 🙍🏾♀️
Everything you say in this video is amazing. Kids should be able to grow up and find out what they believe in. They should find out these things by themselves. Everyone has a different point to life but I think (and this is my opinion) that everyone has a point to that and religions promote the opposite of that. I have always been very open to other people's beliefs and religions but we can't push kids to believe something just because they are our kids. We will never know for certain if we have an after life or how our world was created. We don't know if the anything is real. I can ask questions all day but just because there are no certain answers to anything so we shouldn't try make answers just because there aren't any. I know for a fact that a large majority of the people reading this comment will disagree and I totally respect that. There are no buts of ifs. I am not going to carry on because I respect everyone if you have something to say about what I just said feel free to reply. This is my opinion everyone has a different one. So we shouldn't push our next generation to have the same opinion as someone else. They should figure that out themselves. Everyone has to make there own decisions, because if we all followed the same thing this world would be very different. 🌍❤️💙
I learned good morals and values from life experience. But forcing your kids to learn something will ultimately set them up for failure. At some point, you need to realize that kids need to find their own path in life There's a huge difference between helping/guiding your children, and forcing them to do something. For your child's well-being, you should never force them into anything they're not comfortable with or it may teach them to hate you.
6. Open Air Street Preachers often take their kids out to preach with them. An example is Nolan Cranford, the son of Street Preacher Brian Cranford. Also, a favorite line of most of them is "Train up a child in the way they should go, and they'll never depart."
One time I asked my mom when I was younger "If God had to create us then who created god?" My mom was all like oh well god is infinite and bs like that i don't hate her or anything but sometimes she goes to far one time there was a tornado warning and my mom was getting ready to go to church I didn't go cuz duh!? When I heard that warning on the Tv I ran to my mom and begged her to not go to church. She did. I cryed my 8 yr old ass off while listening to lighting, tree branches falling, and wind thinking my mom was gonna die (she lived btw but she had to stay at a friends place cuz it was flooded with rain) my mom doesn't know when to stop lol. This and so many other incidents made me hate church and which is why I hate going. My friend says I'm an athiest cuz I was forced to go lol I don't think that is true but I can see her perspective lol. I just came home from 7 hours of freakn church. I hate myself lol. Sorry for ranting.
I've been home schooled from the beginning of my schooling and I used these Christian websites until 4th grade. I wasn't actually learning much because science, social studies, and history were all just scriptures from the bible. I told my mum and she got extremely mad at me, I got grounded because I was being "sinful". This went on for 8 freaking YEARS! I ended up moving in with my dad and he is an Atheist.
I honestly can't expect Christians to not raise their kids Christian. I do think people are going overboard saying this is brainwashing and/or abuse, though, cause those are really loaded terms, and aren't children entitled to aspects of their culture, which includes religion? I'm not saying being raised religious can't be harmful, but I think using brainwashing and abuse is a bit much.
Telling children that there's a storybook named "the bible" sounds absolutely okay, but to teach the kids that these things are true, without any kind of evidence is wrong. Then scaring them with hell, so that they won't question the belief is basically the definition of brainwashing, so don't say that "brainwashing" is to much, if anything it should be called "Christianity, one of the worlds biggest brainwashing". Also: How many of the children have grown up and started killing people because of their beliefs? How many have discriminated homosexual people or atheists? Way too many. Then let me ask you "How many people are killing people BECAUSE they are atheists? none that I know of. So I'd say that majority of religions (atleast) are child abuse.
Davvan Christians believe the Bible is true, so they're going to teach their kids that it's true. Parents almost always teach their kids their own set of values. Religious teachings can be damaging, but it depends on what's being taught. Calling it abuse when their are people out there suffering actual abuse is pretty insulting to them.
Great video, I don't understand why as a parent you wouldn't want your child to be independent, and not copy and repeat like a scared sheep. My kid wouldn't believe Noah's ark story....he's one smart cookie.
Statisticly religious people are happier than athiests but not as smart .So would you want your kid to be happy or smart . Is that why morons tend to be grinning .Why isn't the world a happier place cos I'm surrounded by morons. And what if the child is naturally of a low iq , and raised an atheist.
I became an at atheist at thirteen due to two reasons: 1. I became interested in science. A year later, I began studying theoretical physics. 2. I'm Autistic. My one shot at life, and God gives me something to keep me from living a normal one. I don't mean to sound whiney, I realize that there are TONS of people worse off than me, but Autism woke me up. I oft wonder what it would be like if I never questioned it and remained ignorant. I'm glad to be an atheist, and glad to be Autistic, as odd as that sounds. I'm fifteen, and I intend to pursue a career as a physicist once I come of age.
My family are hard core Christians. Like extremely hard core. They wont celebrate Easter, Christmas, or Halloween. They celebrate 4th of July and Thanksgiving tho lol. But my family are ministers. They travel the US to places like church, camp meetings, and revivals to play christian music at those events. They’re in a band. Growing up I would travel with them and they would always tell me and my cousins that this is what we are destined to do when we get older. They would force me to play drums for the church and would force me and my cousins to sing in church. I hated it and it made me so mad they would force us. It made me not want to do it. Ig you could say they did force the religion on me and my cousins but honestly I’m glad they raised me that way and so are my cousins. I’m glad I grew up around music and my family being ministers and them being Christians. I’m glad I grew to what I believe is right y’know. As I got older I started to realize that I loved playing instruments and singing. It’s hard at the same time tho cause if I did keep this music thing up idk if I’d want to be a Christian artist or what. That’s where the conflicting part is but see in the comments some people think forcing religion is wrong. And I also see some people turned from what they were raised to believe. As a teenager who is old enough to make a decision in what to believe I’m glad my parents brought me up in that. I guess it depends on who’s teaching, raising you in what to believe. I also think it depends on what kind of person you are too. But I do know that it’s a personal choice and if someone wants to believe different then they are free too. Just be welcoming to everyone with different beliefs and dont disrespect them.
Hey guys I'm in grade 7 in south Africa and my teacher says every morning each person needs to take a verse from the bible and read it but since I don't believe in god I don't know what to do 😇please help me
I go to a Christian School so i face the same problem plus i am being forced to go to church very Sunday when i could be learning a whole new language and practice my dancing (that's what i did in quarantine sundays) or simply be more productive
Great video and something I taught my children all through their childhood. Me and my wife did not allow them to be categorised by faith of any kind. The UK was a "christian" country when we were starting a family and we had both received religious education as children. Despite both of us being only 20 years old when our first child was born we resisted any attempt by anyone to convince us that they needed to be compartmentalised as being of a particular religion. We now have 8 grandchildren and our children are bringing them up in the same manner. All 12 of our immediate descendants are kind and caring people who brim over with empathy and compassion. Not one of the adults claim any religious reason for being so inclined. I doubt any of the adults would regard Atheist as an insult. We were all born in the heart of stars and one day our atoms will once again be spiraling down through a nebula towards the birth of a new star. How much more beautiful can it be?
I think there is a valuable lesson to be learned in the Santa myth. Having a firmly held and cherished belief in Santa and going through the process of learning that it is a myth teaches critical thinking skills to a young mind. Especially if you are an atheist parent who uses the opportunity as a teaching mechanism.
You're right. When I believe in Santa I had a friend who'd already figured the myth out. In primary school I remember defending his existence. I believed that flying reindeer was more plausible than my parents having enough money for more presents.
This is so true, scientifically it’s been proven that a child up until the age of 7 is running off of their subconscious mind. What that means is that whatever you teach them is what they’ll believe. This is why it’s so crucial to critically review your beliefs so you’re sure they’re your actual beliefs and not just someone else’s
I Learned About Santa Claus, I No Longer Believe In Santa Claus. I Learned About GOD And The AfterLife, I Will Believe In GOD And The AfterLife FOREVER.
Just so you guys know, God didn't kill Jesus. Jesus is God, he willingly laid down his life for all of us so that we may be with him in Heaven. You just gotta believe, and if you believe, you should be acting good. You should try to not sin but everyone does, you just try to be the best person you can! Jesus is still alive you people. Also, what God tells us to do is what is best for us. I'm talking about the God of Abraham and Christians... In the Bible, God says to raise your children in the ways of the lord.
love your videos! I would love to see a video of "How to deal with family members" when they believe that "Lucifer really wants me" Because I am not a narrow minded Fundamentalist Christian?? There is NO way to win an argument. There is no other point of view allowed. .
Having a child was what got me seriously thinking about religion and morality for the first time. This video is very well thought out and discussed, Awesome stuff Hemant, Love your work.
you don't shout or howl. you don't sneer and jeer; ridicule - you think and think well. you speak well. you're interesting, fun. the absolute opposite of that which raised me... very glad i am here. thanks!
"I want to live in a society where children are taught how to think and not just what to think..." Bingo. This is the difference between education and indoctrination.
Very true.
DIE RELIGION
Well said
@@mercuryandroid1348 Evolution teaching is indoctrination.
We need more people like this
I think religion should always be taught, but taught as fiction or legend, like Greek or Roman mythology. Religion is a part of culture and a culturally diverse world needs to appreciate the views and beliefs of past and present religions. But children must always be allowed to make their own choices about what they want to believe. If a child wants to be religious then fair enough.
Jonny Fox so true
God is not a myth, he is real. So you should never teach it like a myth. If you're an athiest, than you shouldn't teach it to your child, let you kid go out to the world and learn about it themselves. Let them make the decision. If you treat it like it's fake, then they will believe it is fake, that's not letting the kid believe what they want at all.
i think you are wrong no one should ever be religious its too poisonous and too irashenal

***** oh, your imaginary friend
Feel your pain bro, well done for resisting.
yeah nice job holding yourself together
KenoTube Same what should I do I’m forced to go to church
@@toothpick8309just tell them you’re an atheist and you will never believe in religious bullshit no matter what is done or said
2 main reasons why most people remain religious. 1. The long for eternal the reward. And 2. The fear of the eternal punishment. The bad part is the harm they do to themselves and others because of the fairy tale.
You forgot reason no. 3. Christian chicks are hot. They get all dressed-up for Jesus and look mighty fine on Sundays.
#4 *indoctrination*
Both of those are false
+Poseidon Logical thinking makes athiest's stronger?Nothing exploded to create everything?Sounds a bit illogical to me.
+MegaFloyd100 right! the big bang theory is silly and sounds like something a child would make up
+Poseidon you so silly using a mythological Greek god as your avatar. oh yes very silly
When I was younger I would ask my grandma all sorts of questions about God, and when she didn't have an answer she would say "Won't it be fun to ask God in heaven?" I used to dream about dying because it meant I could see God and talk to him. THAT IS NOT HEALTHY. Little kids shouldn't want to die!
agreed, it seems like adults telling kids to believe in Santa Claus and leave out cookies and be good or else they won't get any presents
Yes thats bad. But not all religions state that. Other religions like the SDA state that you should live your life for god and that suicide is a waste of what god had planned for your future success because they do not believe that ppl go to heaven when we die, rather we go when the lord comes to heaven.

I don't need your preaching, and don't think every athiest thinks that there is no afterlife, I believe you are born again (like your soul is recycled). So please, don't waste your time commenting these beliefs on an atheists channel, all it will do is make you look bad.
As an athiest parent I don't tell my child about Santa for the reason you mention in the video: I don't believe in lying to my child. About anything.
no matter how embarrassing the questions might be?
***** there's no reason to let embarrassment to stop them from knowing the truth. maybe about things like sex and what not, at least wait until they're teenagers. but tell them the truth if you want them to.
You can still tell your kids about santa without lying about it, you just need to be clever on how you word it.
This same channel did a pair of videos about the pros and cons of telling children about Santa.
You need to mess with your kids though. Telling your kid that Santa exists is just for fun. They I'll know in due time that it's all bullshit anyway, though I wish I could say the same thing about religion.
My Dad won't accept that I'm an Atheist. If I disagree he has one answer: You're not being open minded.
Oh, you're not being open-minded? He's the one with the closed mind.

@@legstitchedtigerftw2455 Thank you for reminding me of this important video. After five years, I had forgotten about it.
GhostHawk1776 It seems to me many religious leaders who get caught in affairs...or worse, don't share your belief.

Mankind is weak. You must maintain your faith in God or become weak and fail your purpose. No one is perfect. We all fail every once and a while. The key is to accept your failure and correct it and move onward, ever stronger.

It's working for me, because I am sincere in my heart and am loyal to God.
You have to take morality very seriously. You have to become the very definition of righteousness. You have to be the example.

My dad joined religion when he was 17. This video is flawed by so many ways.
Or at least not so heavily religion-centric. Which is a good thing.
People in developing countries tend to believe that religion can solve everything. Some of them still take their sick friends to a religious expert for fucks sake. Just believe that satan is causing your flu and let this holy water heal you.

Then, when he's interested and curious as to what religion is, I hand him the Bible, I hand him the Qur'an, I hand him the God's Delusion, and I let him read them and develop his own opinions,
Exactly. Forcing religious opinions on your child is very biased.
ahaha, tbh ill try not to be biased, but i know i will be. i can just imagine reading the god delusion to them instead of a bible.
Aka the best way to raise kids
God damn that's the perfect way to go about it I will be using this in the future thanks for the help lol
I wish my parents could've seen this. Not that it would've made a difference. :((
Oh sorry. That’s unfortunate.

"Religion is a set of bad answers to good questions" Well said!
He's been called a "gay" and a Satanist already.
wwjudasdo How old is your child? It sounds like he's being bullied :( I'm glad you're fighting for and with your son.
MezzaBenoch
Not at all bullied beyond "normal" high school rhetoric. Thanks for your concern though. I've met more compassionate and caring atheists on Google than I ever had Christians for the 30 years I was one.
wwjudasdo he can answer back calling them superstitious gullible fools
But when we got to the part where Herodes ordered the butchering of infants, she looked at me in horror and said:
'But..isn't God all-powerful? Did he let him kill all the babies?"
Reluctantly, I did say yes.
She began to cry and said:
'I don't like God, dad! God is mean! He let him kill babies!"
It hit me pretty hard, but she was right. It got worse when she learned that God actively went on random genocides himself, to the point where she said:
"I will make God say sorry and make him nice!"
It was..quite the thing, really.
Kids are brainwashed with religion and grow up LITERALLY not being able question for themselves
Would you say the same about a child who was raised by atheist parents to be atheist?
@@Malhaloc no cause it isn't true there
@@CRYSTAL_CUSTOMS Ok.

I pretty much imagined a sitcom style scenario where my future 5 year old hears the word "Jeesus" and says to Grandma, "Oh yeah mommy told me that you guys think there's this guy called God that made up everything himself.... but we don't believe in that, it sounds really silly." /cue laugh track as I do a spit take with my water /fade to black
Either that, or religious family members "teaching" my kid about Jeesus before I ever talk to him about it. I'd have to undo it all without sounding like an asshole. Even tho it's kinda dickish to teach someone else's kid religion, but that's family amirite?
Jeesus? We call him that here in Finland.
Do what my parents did and wait until I'm about ten, them bombard me with many religions and atheism, my parents then said to go away and decide what I was...I turned agnostic until I read the bible, which made me an atheist.
I've heard that people in Finland are not hardcore believers.
Hemant I 100 % agree with you, children should not be indoctrinated, Believing bad answers to good questions is not a reason to believe in a deity.
Religion reminds me of the walking dead season 7 ep 2. Where the people BELIVe in the King with a damn tiger.
There is a gray area that has caused a lot of suffering through out U.S. history.
My parents were glad that their 9 year old was reading the bible front to back and interpreting it. Little did they know;

Star W4rz The cure for this world is the Bible.
I would just state it as what it states, and then ask my kid "does this make sense to you?"
This would teach my kid to develop critical thinking.
I think it's equally dangerous to teach your kid that "there is no god, jesus is not a god" versus saying "ok, there is this one book which teaches that jesus is a god, what do u think? do u believe? why or why not?"

Facts
Cyber Yeah because God having his son tortured and crucified to forgive us all some how makes sense...
Lol funny
Do you mean you live in Vatican City? I know Catholic colonists settled in Maryland, but I thought by now they would have left.
same thing happened to me

I don't want my nephew to become religious
Why? It's fine.
+Jacob Sqautch I already have to avoid visiting my little sister because of religion. I don't want to end up going to church ever again. I don't want it on my side of the family.
Shego Molzen That's kind of sad that you can't see your little sister because of religion.
Jesse Popov Wait do Jewish people believe in God?

I wasn't actually learning much because science, social studies, and history were all just scriptures from the bible. I told my mum and she got extremely mad at me, I got grounded because I was being "sinful". This went on for 8 freaking YEARS! I ended up moving in with my dad and he is an Atheist.
If you lie to your kids about a story about not lying, whats the point???
I honestly can't expect Christians to not raise their kids Christian. I do think people are going overboard saying this is brainwashing and/or abuse, though, cause those are really loaded terms, and aren't children entitled to aspects of their culture, which includes religion? I'm not saying being raised religious can't be harmful, but I think using brainwashing and abuse is a bit much.
I think this video is meant for non-believer parents...
Planet Noize
Yeah, I know.
I think that it depends how far the parents go about it. Extreme cases can be counted as abuse/brainwash whereas others not so much.

I became an at atheist at thirteen due to two reasons:
Hey guys I'm in grade 7 in south Africa and my teacher says every morning each person needs to take a verse from the bible and read it but since I don't believe in god I don't know what to do 😇please help me
Tell them
I go to a Christian School so i face the same problem plus i am being forced to go to church very Sunday when i could be learning a whole new language and practice my dancing (that's what i did in quarantine sundays) or simply be more productive
Just Read The Bible!
@@Dark_Force_Of_Wishes How about no. If people don’t believe in what’s written, THEY DONT NEED TO READ IT. So take this 🖕🏻and leave ➡️🚪
@@cedar4539 NO, FUCK OFF!!!
The reason I don’t believe in god is because my parents force me to go to church tonight I have to go to youth group my parents anger me,
Seriously if I was Christian I would be going to hell already damn who am I kidding I was going to hell since I was 9 😂
Great video and something I taught my children all through their childhood.

I Learned About Santa Claus,
I No Longer Believe In Santa Claus.
I Learned About GOD And The AfterLife,
I Will Believe In GOD And The AfterLife FOREVER.
@@Dark_Force_Of_Wishes I feel bad for your future kids

Just so you guys know, God didn't kill Jesus. Jesus is God, he willingly laid down his life for all of us so that we may be with him in Heaven. You just gotta believe, and if you believe, you should be acting good. You should try to not sin but everyone does, you just try to be the best person you can! Jesus is still alive you people. Also, what God tells us to do is what is best for us. I'm talking about the God of Abraham and Christians... In the Bible, God says to raise your children in the ways of the lord.
What's that supposed to mean?
april fools?
love your videos!
