I followed this story since it debuted on unsolved mysteries decades ago. What Simon failed to mention was that the second time AS plead guilty to those charges, the ghost of that woman bothered him night and day, even caused him to break down in the courtroom and change his plea to guilty. Obviously there was no ghost as in apparition but rather the woman's spirit would not rest until her killer was brought to justice. Also, Ms Basa had a Spanish accent because Spain colonized the country not unlike what they did to Mexico. This case is for real and even a little spooky.
I don't know why, but every time Simon said "there's no such thing as possession!!" I had the thought that the next thing out of his mouth was going to be like ancient Sumerian in an angry baritone.
This is seriously the one of maybe three cases that I don’t know the answer to. It’s the bit about the jewelry that throws me a bit, because it allegedly wasn’t like “he stole some jewelry”; it was specifically described. And the bit about giving the phone numbers of the relatives who gave the pieces to her - the internet wasn’t widely used at the time. It would have been a lot more difficult to contact these folks, tie the jewelry to the family members who gave them, and then giving the information to police without those family members saying “oh yeah, that lady called us”.
For a second, I misread that title as' Decoding the Unknown: Ghost Trick', and thought Simon was doing a Let's Play of the most awesome ghost, detective, spy, prison-break, assassin video game ever made.
This is what happened. The victim told the channeler prior to her death the suspicions of A.Showry stealing her family jewellery. Victim states that she is going to confront AS and then she is found murdered. Easy peasy.
I don’t understand why the people at the hospital who knew Showery was going to see Basa the night she died didn’t tell the police themselves earlier. If I knew someone was going to see someone who it later turned out was murdered that night, I’m fairly sure I’d think the police should know
I suspect most of the people who knew were of the same ethnicity as Teresita, and if you know anything about Filipinas you'll know there's very much a culture of 'not getting involved' and a distrust of authority (police in particular). It's probably why the 'ghost story' was used to pass the information on. Put a distance between the murder and the accuser.... I'm with choice A or C, definitely not D, and likely not B...
So the girlfriend of the murderer suspected him but didn’t want him to know that she turned him in, so she contacted this other lady and said “go to the cops and tell them it’s my bf but don’t mention my name”. She could have been scared of him, maybe unsure of his guilt, just didn’t want her name in it. This lady worked with the victim so she could have easily mimicked her voice/accent. DEFINITELY NOT GHOSTS lol
This is a weird case, and I did wonder how you would write about the story. I think that I am more with Katy that it was B! I think in context that the people Philippines had generally a bit more belief in the supernatural, and then with the stress maybe thats how her body kind of released it. I also assumed that she had basically picked up the information subconsciously about the murder, and it just warped into a strange trance like dream. If she had wanted to just pass on the information she could have just written an anonymous letter or made a phone call to the police, as it seems like they were keep and well would have looked into those if they ended up following up on ghosts!
You're so much fun to watch! I love the tangents! I personally believe in ghosts, but don't believe in trance situations. So I totally go with choice A.
When the Sherrif was calling out for Cletus to fetch the weird old lady, to help narrow it down he should have mentioned she was in the old house with all the cats
Just thinking about Simon's to-do list has me rolling! Lol! Aside from fixing a repaired window, i bet he has "fold the dishes" and "take laundry out of dishawsher" on there.
I concur with Katy's answer B. A lot of stress (or the lack of), does wonder to the ability of passing on information subconsciously (aka unwittingly). That is why police interviews (and psychiatrist appointments) extracts so much information from stressed (resp. completely relaxed) individuals.
Awesome episode! I have heard of even actors and actresses channelling other people, but I am not sure if it is the same type of thing. I used to follow a medium named Erin Pavlina, who had all types of absolutely interesting viewpoints and stories of The Other Side, but I am not sure if I can believe many of the things she says. I am going to keep an open mind (though all four options seemed great, especially the subconscious one) though looking further into the case makes it seem less like an actual ghost and more like something else. There is some type of vibrational science where people pinpont things they can't see, though I am very skeptical. The idea of psychics and investigation is fascinating, though I am not sold on its credibility. Those parapsychology cases are so fascinating. I imagine cases of true premonition do happen because some people are so good at pattern recognition that they can predict events that seem extremely likely to happen based upon the previous patterns they observed.
"Possession is nine-tenths of the law" relates to the law's tendency to say that whoever is in possession of something is the legal owner, at any rate in English-speaking countries. For example, if you squat on land for long enough you can get a legal title to it (don't get too excited, we're talking about squatting for many years).
option B comes from the psychological term “Peritraumatic dissociation”, which is considered to be dissociation that is experienced during and immediately following a traumatic event. Research is on-going related to its development, its importance, and its relationship to trauma, dissociative disorders, and predicting the development of PTSD.
As someone with "healing powers" according to *NOT ME* but others, _(really, I've given this thought and I have semi-scientific explanation-hypothesis: it's just how underrated natural human regeneration is, and how human interpersonal acuity is capable of achieving things "for others" we wouldn't for ourselves unless in grave danger - in part thanks to something called "mirror neurons" - if you're able to chill out and transfer that chill vibe to another person, you contribute to lowering their level of cortisol, which in excess, among other things, inhibits the immune system. Moreover, mood and emotion is much more important in regeneration than we give it credit for. Being able to affect people positively gives them both of these benefits.)_ I'm kinda in the "I wanna believe, but first I want to see all the scientific possibilities" camp. I'll gladly give this a more "magical" veil if it's gonna help someone believe it better, thus elevating the regenerative results. But I'll equally gladly give scientific explanation to those baffled by the effects. I'd hate to charge money for this, and I probably couldn't get "in-state" if I did so, it'd feel so immoral. *AND FINALLY* - after hearing this rant and especially 23:13 *FINALLY* get why Simon's so mad about this. I feel you bro now. But don't let that sh!tty relative destroy the child within
Simon's biggest stressors, in no particular order: supernatural/ghostly "explanations"; inept police work; inadequate punishment for criminals; finding words on his tangents; and the idea that someone, somewhere, might be a spiritualist. To be fair, I share most of these stressors, having been a true crime addict for a couple of decades now.
I need a few good episode of "Decoding the Unknown", filled with rants from Simon, to recover from listening to several "Casual Criminalists" in a row. Simon isn't the only one scarred by Pedro Lopez.
As bad as Pedro Lopez was, Ed Kemper was a whole lot scarier. On Simon's recommendation I watched Mindhunter. Truely brilliant, and very disappointing that Netflix cancelled after 2 seasons, but the actor who played Kemper was scary... Scary good. Another one I can recommend is David Tennant's portrayal of Dennis Neilsen in Des... Just look at a few photos of Neilsen before you watch it. Tennant is a true master....
@@Chris-hx3om I am a real fan of 'Mindhunter' and was disappointed when Netflix cancelled after Season 2. I'll have to check out Des, haven't heard of that one.
I think you have to think about what SHE believed, because if she was very spiritual, and Catholic like most Filipinos, she probably believed in it. So her trauma response way of sharing the information was through a performance that she believed was the energy of a spirit manifesting in her grief or something. She could have been performing without realizing it consciously knowing that's what she's doing. So you both can kind of be right.
I agree with B... between the stress of a similar person murdered close by and being fired from her job, she probably wasn't sleeping well and had simi-delusional dreams. As for 4 yrs for murder, I have given up on fair justice, because I know a guy serving more time for weed and a pain pill.
Back then (and even sometimes nowadays) women were considered emotional, silly, unreliable, dramatic, etc, so were often not not listened to or believed. No wonder the lady with info about the murder invented a "source" so she could get people to pay attention and investigate.
What I can't stand are the channels that use tarot cards or some weird crystals to find missing children. The descriptions say it's for entertainment purposes only. As someone who had a young family member kidnapped and found murdered.. it truly disgusts me that these people are getting paid by yt to make these despicable videos.
"Posession is 9/10s of the law" refers to a lot of things, from "being found with an illegal drug means it's at least 9/10s yours" to "if you're squatting on a property alone it's 9/10s yours".
Simon the reason that it’s spoken with a Spanish Accent is mainly because the Philippines was a Territory of Spain from 1565-1898! So they was a Spanish Colony for just a wee bit longer than then 333 Years. So I’d say that it’s a pretty strong reason for such a heavy Spanish usage
I knew a psychic that worked for the police. He hated doing it. Said it was more of a curse than a gift. He found a lot of bodies. One stuck out of this guy that went missing in Appalachia which they found based on his information. Described the victim down to his clothes. He was off the trail I forget what really happened to him. He even showed me the paperwork. One time my mom met him and I told her about this guy and I was on break and she sat with him and she asked him playfully what's in my wallet. He said something about The wizard of Oz. She had a picture in there from that movie. There's no way he would have ever seen in her wallet because she didn't even buy anything and they had never met. It is kind of crazy. I still don't know what to make of it.
You should look up a Chinese case then. A sister who lived in small rural town was visited by the ghost of her brother, whom, by all her knowledge was away at another province being a migrant worker. He told her he'd been murdered and gave her the location of his body and asked her to give him a proper burial. She took this to the police and they were actually able to retrieve his body and figure out who murdered him. They also could prove that the sister was innocent and had no prior knowledge of her brother's death or even where he was. This is because she is from a small rural area which she has never left her entire life, and originally being the prime suspect, police traced her whereabouts and digital footprints (as the case was fairly recent) and they were able to confirm the actual perpetrators and the sister did not know of each other.
7:40 The Spanish accent would come from the fact that it was a Spanish colony from 1565 to around 1896, when the Philippine Revolution and Spanish American war happened. Spain ceded the Philippines to the US, the US maintained it as a territory until after WWII and in 1946 it gained independence.
I remember this case on Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack years ago(he was the man that never blinked)I loved that show and they did ghost stories and true crimeso well I thought the murderers were in my backyard or a ghost in my closet(I was raised Catholic) so ghost Jesus and all that anyhoo Great Job Simon
New Jersey Spirit Seekers Lead Investigator here and I have seen a person who's looks and voice changed while investigating. The person in question was young with a very high voice and they looked like a senior citizen with a voice so low that there was no way this person or even a person with a natural deep voice could sound like what we heard. This hole time the person was staring out like they could look through you and the oddest part was while hearing this voice the person staring never moved there mouth. (And no the person was not a ventriloquist) There were only the three of us in the place we were investigating. All three of us were in a small room at the time when this happened.
Simon Whistler, *_British_* UA-camr extraordinaire: _"Why would she speak with a Spanish accent if she was from the Philippines?"_ *Every colonised people, ever* : "Bruv, seriously?"
At 5:55 the saying "possession is nine tenths of the law" basically if you can catch someone in possession of incriminating evidence then 9/10's of the work is already done. Or more or less saying it's an easy convection if caught red handed. If law enforcement searched you and found drugs then it basically makes you the owner and criminal. Also "caught red handed" basically catching someone with blood on their hands so making them the actual murderer.
I love that at least 30% of any episode is just Simon arguing with himself, over his own opinions, with ever-decreasing coherency.

But don't let that sh!tty relative destroy the child within
Oh its funny Simon, it's funny as hell 😂 pardon my language but Cletus just made me laugh aloud.
'Stressors'.... Hmmmm, been watching Mindhunter? (I hope so 😁)
"And as always, I am your decoder..." XD
That doesn’t explain every single detail of the murder than only the victim would have known
The Philippines was substantially influenced by the Spanish during ye olde imperialist days. So speaking Spanish and Tagalog is common.
After the multiple choice thing I'm convinced Katie is trolling Simon soooooo hard
😂 delicious
I agree with B... between the stress of a similar person murdered close by and being fired from her job, she probably wasn't sleeping well and had simi-delusional dreams.
As for 4 yrs for murder, I have given up on fair justice, because I know a guy serving more time for weed and a pain pill.
Everyday day Simon's musclin'... bustlin'... rustlin' ...nestlin' 😂
Back then (and even sometimes nowadays) women were considered emotional, silly, unreliable, dramatic, etc, so were often not not listened to or believed. No wonder the lady with info about the murder invented a "source" so she could get people to pay attention and investigate.
engagement of the channel because it makes it seem better on the algorithm
Simon, you are so freaking entertaining!
“Why would she have a Spanish accent if she’s from the Philippines?” Lol oh Simon…
A future DTU. Simon's Ghost. Do I really exist?
"I know there's some strong evidence that I do, but I'm not totally convinced".
I do hope Simon can grab a cup of tea or something to calm himself after such emotional episodes😅😅.
Hearing Simon drop an F bomb gave me much delight
What I can't stand are the channels that use tarot cards or some weird crystals to find missing children.
The descriptions say it's for entertainment purposes only. As someone who had a young family member kidnapped and found murdered.. it truly disgusts me that these people are getting paid by yt to make these despicable videos.
Love how 'angry' Simon gets at the failing of the police and judicial systems... And in CC as well.... ❤
Oh Simon way to alienate any new potential viewers but we still love you dude. Lol
"Posession is 9/10s of the law" refers to a lot of things, from "being found with an illegal drug means it's at least 9/10s yours" to "if you're squatting on a property alone it's 9/10s yours".
Really interesting stuff.
Simon: doctoral thesis. My brain: doctoral faeces!
Sorry Simon I think Katie's right 🤣
Man... This one caused Simon so much stress.
Well. The screen shake is new. I like it.
Cleetus needs to appear in every reference to the American South. As a southern, i find it accurate.
O.M.G. I feel like I am listening to a male version of myself !!! I LOVE that he is in conversation with an unknown spirit.
Sometimes I just want to scream, “SIMON! Stop doing so much coke and just read the script!”
New favorite adjective, “perpetratey”
Simon Whistler, *_British_* UA-camr extraordinaire:

*Every colonised people, ever* :
"Bruv, seriously?"
