In my beach fishing experiences, there's usually two or three successive troughs. Each one is wider and deeper than the previous.I usually wade thru the first one to the next shallow sandbar and fish he second, deeper trough. The bigger fish tend to be more numerous and less wary there.Sometimes you have to wade chest deep water to stand below waist deep on the next bar.It is great fun to catch those many smaller ones tho.I've fished a few Florida beaches this way when I lived there.De Soto,Clearwater,Pensicola, and Mayport.
The gold and orange with spots mirror lure is a good one. And clark spoon mackeral rigs. Also try stuff with chart over purple. And anything that resembles a glass minnow up to 9"s.

That spoon (Johnson Minnow) is notorious for coming with a dull hook. You might try sharpening it before the initial use, to increase your hook-up ratio. Also, snip off the weed-guard unless it is absolutely necessary.

The Ocean Dude Yeah man it was crazy for sure! Just south of Clearwater probably about 15ish minutes south they were running thick through there about a week ago. How is fort Myers right now I’m heading there in about two weeks to do some snook fishing?
T Swizzle sweet! Now that I think about it I have heard of Indian rocks but never fished there. I haven’t fished ft Myers beach recently, but the water all around us is beautiful right now and the water temps are about 86 degrees. Anything and everything is rolling around out there.

Kevin Palencia .tenacore you don’t need a long cast. The fish are in the trough 5 feet in front of you. That rod is way too big. You just need a 7-8 ft medium light rod.
I will be visiting Anna Maria Island for the first time ever this June. After watching this, I’m really looking forward to it…great video. If I may ask, are you using a leader, or do you just tie your braid right to the swivel? TIA
If you don't mind me asking, is there any specific leader you recommend for the Johnson Gold Spoon and Swivel? Did you throw any kind of weight? Also, could you do the same setup with mono-filament instead of braid? I'm coming to AMI in August and have never done any surf fishing, but I really like what you set up. I've never used braided line before either, and everything I've read says it take some getting used to v. mono-filament. Is it that much of a difference? Just trying to figure out the best set up to catch fish with my son while we are there. Is there a set up you recommend for pier fishing with the same line? Any live bait advice? Thanks in advance!
Just get a 4-5000 size reel and put it on a 8ft med heavy rod. 30lb Braid 30lb leader will be a great all around set up for pier and beach fishing. Don’t think too much into it, this set up will be great. People get very picky with leaders and such for certain fish, this is fine. I recommend the boca 50 on an 8’ star rod. I like power pro braid. Stay away from the cheap amazon stuff unless you find a test video of line strength on UA-cam. Enjoy!
The Ocean Dude thank you for taking the time to reply! I really appreciate the feedback, especially since I have zero knowledge of ocean/surf fishing and plan on doing some for the first time for our trip to AMI next month. Thanks again!

It's personal preference for fishing the tough they actually make a rod and reel set up called a side caster which is what everyone used in the 70s then modern invention came out with bait casters to model them. While some people didn't like them and preferred to use spinning tackel which was more forgiving.
