Why The Clone Wars Is Star Wars At Its Best

- Star Wars popularity might be at an all-time high. With the new trilogy concluded, Disney + wrapping up The Mandalorian with future series on the table, Star Wars is everywhere. Due to this, it has been my personal observation that The Clone Wars might be greatly overlooked. This wonderfully crafted series is peak Star Wars. Featuring characters we know and love, plus new ones, all in a universe sized war. This series is simply fantastic and in my opinion - Star Wars at its best. This video was made with as much love and respect to the franchise as possible, with the hopes of making @HelloGreedo @StarWarsExplained @BesY24 @starwarsstudio100 @StarWarsTheory and all those channels I respect, proud.

Nater Tot Ima be honest my favourite piece of Star Wars content is easily the Clone wars, and my favourite show/movie is also you guessed it the clone wars.
Never have I ever watched anything else like the clone wars weather it’s a movie or show.
hey man you should mention subscribing more cause I totally forgot; tell you said something. My bad.
I’m looking forward to part-2 of The Clone Wars video you are working on. I couldn’t agree more with you in this part-1 video. Ahsoka Tano is easily my favorite SW character (with Anakin and Luke battling for 2nd place). And, there’s a good reason for why Ahsoka is my favorite. My #1 complaint with Rey in the sequel trilogy is how her character development is sorely lacking when she is compared to Ahsoka Tano. Of course, this is only my opinion. But, I wish we would have seen more development of Rey throughout the sequel trilogy. Kylo Ren got better character development. Maybe someday we will see a similar approach as The Clone Wars took for a sequel trilogy animated series set prior to episode 9 so we can see the sequel trilogy characters develop more. The Clone Wars made me love the prequel trilogy on a whole new level (flaws and all). I hope to see something similar happen for the sequel trilogy (flaws and all).
Just for this I subscribed

So me and my brother are huge star wars fans, and a couple of days ago we looked at the wookiepedia, and you know whats funny? Ashoka's page is the fourth most visited page of all of that entire wiki. She is a good character all right
This is especially very noticeable for major audience of TV show. Ahsoka grew up with us.

Its funny how the clone wars makes the prequels better and the sequels worse.

This sense is better than the entire sequel trilogy
Always thought it felt weird that the guy that once was galactic hero Anakin Skywalker would treat good innocent people and old friends with such little mercy. I feel as if, even considering what happened to Padme, there was a missing link between the two characters.
Maybe it was just sorrow and time.
Every generation has “their Star Wars,” and I was the target demographic for the Clone Wars whenever it came out, and I am so thankful for that because Star Wars: The Clone Wars became my Star Wars. My dad was a big Star Wars fan as he grew up with the original trilogy. My older cousins grew up with the prequel trilogy, and now my younger cousin is growing up with the sequel trilogy and Rebels. Star Wars has broken generational barriers with its amazing stories, and allows my 52 year old dad to have a conversation with my 7 year old cousin because they’re both extremely passionate about the subject.
I was targeted toward rebels, which led me to end up watching The Clone Wars after the series ended in search of something somewhat similar, I have my nostalgia with both of them even though most people look down on rebels. I always remember watching the Rebel's recon episode recaps on UA-cam after watching an episode after it came out and seeing the teasers for the next episode. Probably some of my fondest memories in terms of Star Wars, and heck maybe even television in general. The sequels don't really give me the same feeling as those shows or the rest of the movies, almost sort of pretend it didn't happen and act like there was nothing else after ROTJ.
I grew up on the ot and prequels but for some reason I didn’t enjoy the clone wars tv show much as a kid now season 7 is on Disney + so i decided to see if the show was better than I remember watched the Darth Maul episodes and fell in love with the show
Moses Gutierrez glad you corrected your mistake wouldn’t want to have to use the high ground
@Moses Gutierrez his 7 yr old cousin doesn't think of you at all
@Moses Gutierrez The prequels were worse though
It's no coincidence that almost all of the best moments in Rebels revolved around plots or characters introduced in Clone Wars. Keep these coming please
Oh, without a doubt. They work beautifully in sync together. I think a lot of that goes to Filoni and the fact so much of the shows (both of them) were mapped out. I think this really helps. It's a wonder why Disney didn't use this formula.
I definitely plan on making more. I'm hoping to have some sort of success with this video. As I've mentioned, this was extremely time consuming and I'm hoping it gains views to make it worth the time. I guess we will see in the coming days. Hopefully enough people share and support! Thanks for the compliment though! :)
That being said Rebels was still a good sequel👍
Agreed. Rebels is a good show, especially for the universe, but oddly enough, for me, the best elements came from expanding on what Clone Wars had already created.
Honestly having clone wars replaced with rebels was a fucking joke as it was basically all kiddie shit bar Darth maul and the clones
@@NaterTot Rebels had its moments. But it had a lot of flaws too. Honestly it mostly feels like a missed opportunity to me. I guess I was just wanting Rebels to be the 'Clone Wars' of the original trilogy, and that just isn't what rebels was or wanted to be.
The Clone Wars proved that the problem with the prequels was Lucas had so much he wanted to say, but didn't know how to cram it into three films.
This. That and he needed a team of talented people to translate his crap.
I also feel that star wars does fair a lot better in an episodic telling of the story. Rather than movies. Especially since most of the movies are very divisive whereas the clone wars and the mandolorian are widely praise and hold very little arguments against it. Althogh rebels and the resistance do have problems mainly because of tone and it being more shifted towards a younger audience
Star Wars is meant to be a show like game of thrones that way we can cover as much as possible naturally

The Clone Wars made the prequels good
No. They _perfected_ it.
@@skyguysreactions They filled in the potential the prequels did not fulfill.
Last Rookie It felt like it was a continuation of what the prequels did fulfill, but I do agree with that to some degree (rhyme not intended), in that it did fulfill some ideas or other things that the PT did not. Or rather could not, due to time constraints for the films. Things such as Qui-Gon teaching Yoda about the ability to retain consciousness after death, further deepening the relationship between Skywalker and Kenobi and the tragedy of Anakin Skywalker, more depth and character to the Clones and the attachment the audience felt towards them only to feel deep sadness when they are given the order to turn their blasters on their Jedi Generals, and so on.
The prequels were great, this show is excellency, is the epitome of what SW is, I mean, it's Star Wars perfection
Yes! Especially ROTS/Order 66. Showed us the human side of the Clone Troopers, the friendships between them, the friendship they had with the Jedi and their tragic stories. Gave Order 66 so much more depth and impact. The stories of Rex, Fives, Gregor etc etc does indeed improves the PT a lot! It’s TCW that made me appreciate the prequals so much more than prior to it!
i will never get enough of people talking about clone wars, its so good and deserves more attention
I started watching the clone wars after I beat Jedi Fallen Order. I thought the show was just a easy moneymaker for Lucasfilm and Disney. As I started watching after a slow start, this show really surprised me and it’s a phenomenal show!
What’s ironic is that this show is extremely good because filoni and his team had to rely on ambition and more creative stories because of the decreased budget back in the early 2010s
Wookie Commander what was amazing is how patient they were with Darth Mauls Story having it spread across the whole show and not just immediately overuse him as an easy money maker

Funny how they couldn't figure out the basics of writing a likeable character. Which in general, is stupidly easy to understand.
Well, to be fair, Ashoka DID NOT start out likable. She grew to be likable as they developed her character. The problem is that Rey essentially gets no character development between any of the sequels. She's just a scowly girl from the desert... and that's it.
@@SRosenberg203 In terms of character development, Rey had fuckall ever since the first movie

Guess his dream came true
Splooje Juice the Disney show is about the mandalorian . George show was going to take place during the dark times in between episode 3 and episode 4. It was going to answer questions like how did Lea remember her mom. It was going to be tied in with the clone wars, video games like 1313, force unleashed, the real EU. There was 50 scripts already made. The show was going to be like the Noir movies from the 1940’s. It was going to be a more talkative show than action show. It was going to be an hour long.
I hear the Disney show is after episode 6. It’s an action show and it’s only 30 minutes.

The Clone Wars is literally where my love of Star Wars came from. I was born in 2000 but I still managed to watch the star wars movies in order of release, and while I enjoyed them it wasnt until I saw the clone wars that I truly fell in love with the franchise.
Child
The Clone Wars was something I only discovered just recently, and was pleasantly surprised. As far as fleshing out the friendship between Kenobi and Anakin, it does a great deal. Though when I had only seen the prequels, I had always believed their relationship was inherently complicated. Kenobi was simultaneously Jedi instructor, the only father figure Anakin ever knew, and best friend. In addition to their relationship getting off on very rocky ground. To be any one of those things, even under the best of circumstances, is difficult enough. So getting the closer look through Clone Wars has been very helpful, and it really smooths things out as they never were on the big screen.
That's fair. I think that's something Lucas sent up himself that he didn't always work out too well. Like you said, it was complicated but I don't think there was enough put on screen to show that relationship. This is also, like I mentioned, where CW is unfairly at benefit. Having 121 episodes (I believe it is) gives them far more time to develop that relationship. Now when I go back and watch the prequels, it holds up far better and I have a greater understanding of their relationship.
I'm glad you finally found the show! It's one of my faves.
Nater Tot Foremost, thank you for the personal reply. That is always appreciated!
I think you’re completely correct. In depicting the necessary character development for those two, there never was the screen time available in the films to do it any justice.
In addition to having the sheer screen time afforded to Clone Wars developing Anakin’s and Kenobi’s evolving relationship, they did a few other things extremely well. The writers made it so that each of their Clone Wars depictions were strongly in character, and that they felt congruous with the films. Catching that tone and flavor, in a different medium no less, is like aiming at a moving target. Furthermore, they managed to make their relationship feel believable, relatable, and very human. Relatively speaking to the operatic drama inherent to all Star Wars, of course. That is no small accomplishment. Besides, Clone Wars - in so far as I’m concerned - gets a tremendous vote of confidence having Liam Neeson reprise his role through voice over.
That all being said, you do fantastic work. You and HelloGreedo are my Star Wars go-to. Always thoughtful, measured, fair and with a clear appreciation for nuance. Keep doing what you do!
Paul, I always try to make everyone of my comments authentic and me. Engagement is huge and plays a big part into channel growth. It's also a big part of what I want this channel to be about. The celebration of ideas, stories, etc. That's why, for the most part, I try to stay relatively optimistic in my dissections (with the occasional joke here and there to break up the long paragraphs).
As for as the HelloGreedo comparison goes...that means an absolute ton to me. I had hoped that he would see this video (including me even tagging him in this video) to get some constructive criticism from him and even pick his brain. The comparison alone, while completely unjustified (in my opinion) still means the world to me. These videos are time consuming and come with immeasurable amount of doubt. You never know when you could pick the wrong fight, piss off the wrong people or construct a video that nobody watches. I've done all three. I'd love to do this for a living, like HelloGreedo and those I've grown to really appreciate. All I can do is keep working hard and hope that work is seen.
I hope you stick around, share my content where you feel appropriate and continue enjoying yourself! :)
Nater Tot I tell you, as a fellow creator - in my case podcasting - I know the process which you’re experiencing. Also as a writer/editor, I have reached out to do many an interview. One of the biggest things I have learned, including contacting those whom I personally admire, is to never be coy. While there are those who don’t respond for any number of reasons - including the message ending up accidentally in a spam box - you’d be surprised how many actually do respond. I believe HelloGreedo accepts messages via his channel’s Facebook page. Contact him directly, ask him to take a look when he has the chance, and if I’d be ok to pick his brain at some point. So long as you’re professional as well as concise, and he indeed sees the message, he will reply. I don’t believe his demeanor on camera is anything different than who he really is off screen - minus the bucket. Besides, it’s a big compliment being approached in that way. No doubt he spent his own time coming up and out of the UA-cam wilderness. Send it off, and see what happens. If it doesn’t happen, that’s ok too. If you’re doing good work, chances are you’ll cross paths at some point.

Anakin however sees his mother after she had been brutally killed. After leaving her as a slave as a kid, theres tremendous amounts of guilt we can infer from that. But kylo? ehhhh.
Tali De I can see that. And also want to correct any potential misreadings that I don’t like Anakin of Rey. I liked Rey and thought Anakin was far more intimidating than Kylo, and had a better fall. But I do think Kylo ends up a stronger character, but also think that’s largely due to drivers portrait
cwgodzilla I’m surprised anyone prefers Kylo over Anakin especially with all the character building in the Clone Wars. From the council outright deceiving him that Obi Wan died to “test” him to expelling his Padawan from the order there are so many reasons for Anakin to have anger against the council. Kylo’s motivations were cool but felt one dimensional to me.
Andrew the Rapper I can definitely see that, and I also thought Anakin was far, far more threatening than Kylo. I think it’s a difference in tastes, acting styles, and evolution over films and the animated series.
I think Anakin was a far better character than Kylo Ren. With Anakin's story, you can know exactly why he turns to the Dark side and exactly why he turned back to he Jedi. It's clear and defined and he fall has clear moral lessons about not succumbing to anger, hate, desperation, and fear.
Kylo Ren on the other hand never had decisive characterization. You never know why he turned to the dark side, why he's mad at his dad, why he does anything. He kills his dad but can't kill his mom. He want power but also want to teach Rey for some reason that's never explained. He kills Snoke but still want to take over the galaxy. Kylo Ren is supposed to be conflicted but they never do a tell you who he's conflicted.
Ultimately, Kylo Ren just does some good things and some bad things but there is no clarity in any of his actions. For some reason people think he's a great character but I think he's the exact opposite. The new writers just made him do whatever they wanted him to do and they said this was "conflict" within him. It's not conflict, it's sloppy character writing and it's inconsistent.
You never know Kylo's motivation at any point in the movies except for maybe at the very end when he turns good. Anakin on the other always had very clear motivation and you understood every action he took. There is really nothing to Kylo Ren's character. No characterization, no clarity, and no motivation. Anakin is the better character, not Kylo Ren.
(I think Adam Driver might have been a better actor though so people are tricked into thinking Kylo is a better character because of this.)
Clone Wars does what the prequel trilogy could not. It provides so much depth and character development that it is easily one of my favorite storylines in the SW universe. It created and developed one of my favorite characters (and a huge fan favorite) Ashoka Tano as well as my favorite Clone, Captain Rex. This is a great series to come back to every few years and binge-watch the crap out of it. Another great review Nater!
Rephrase it to it shows what The prequels didn’t and you got it right.
I like the prequels for what they are, but the Clone Wars is really what I imagine when Luke says to Obi Wan "You fought in the Clone Wars?"
Ah yeah Ahsoka and Rex are awesome :)
I AM JAFO I _reeeaaally_ hate to be _that_ guy, but it’s *AHSOKA.* Not *ASHOKA.*

@@michaelthemagic1195 na man, the show is great. The movie on the other hand is plain and simply boring.

@@michaelthemagic1195 yea, we all have different tastes so💁
This is a great video, even though you don't mention my favorite character of Satine and all the Mandalorian Arcs. Her interactions with Obi-Wan really help to drive the similarities between Obi-Wan and Anakin but how they completely diverge due to the minor details. Satine is this constant wound to Obi-wan, who loses one of the few connections to his past in a positive sense but remains Steadfast to the Jedi, while Anakin fears death so much he completely falls trying and failing to stop it.
I can't bring myself to watch last four episodes of clone wars I don't want it to be over
I know the pains 😔😭
I just want Clone Wars that’s all need clone wars is my life.
I'd be more hyped for a clone wars trilogy of movies than any live action one
It’s the Star Wars we deserve
I feel so lonely after finishing the clone wars, I think ima just rewatch it in chronological order instead of episodically now
@@bigstunna2049 I got something better: Live Action Clone Wars Trilogy with all our fav characters Hayden and Ewan as Anakin and Obi Wan, Ahsoka, Temeura Morrison as Rex and the 501st.... they could all sorts of tech to make him young like Michael Douglas in Antman etc.

The prequels and the clone wars are the definition of Star Wars for me
Same!
Exactly.
Yessss
For me its both Kotor games, clone wars and the original trilogy. The concepts were there for the prequels but the execution just wasn't done well. I understand why people like ROS, but i can only enjoy attack of the clones ironically and i can't even do that with menace. However i do understand that the prequels were released during some peoples youth and they obviously have nostalgia towards the movies and they can't dislike the movies because of that nostalgia.
Minipoods the prequels were executed terribly, the originals are great, the new trilogy is good (except for last jedi)
I became a Star Wars fan because of this show. That's all I have to say.
That's all you need to watch ;)
Can easily second this. I've never sat through the entirety of one of the films, however, I'm currently rewatching Clone Wars for the third time in anticipation for the 7th season.
I loved to clone wars, I never got to finish it because Netflix removed it but I’ll pick up where I left off tonight.
I became a star wars fan because of Star wars Battlefront 2. 2005

Check back this week!!
Episode 3 was amazing for showing Obi-Wan and Anakin’s friendship
Sir Handel I loved Hayden’s performance, it was just the dialogue
@@wet_weather_imp And his weak voice
He matured till episode 3, in AOTC he was in his late teenage years so his behavior was a little all over the place.
They were apart for almost the entire movie. They had the stuff with dooku at the beginning and then they didn’t see each other until yoda tells obi wan to kill anakin
@Sir Handel the best thing AotC did was set up TCW.
About doing a part 2. “Do it”
Right 🙄 obviously we need a part 2

Omg I just LOVE the clone wars, when I first discovered it when I was younger, was unfortunately at the end of it though, than watched it whole at least 3 times on Netflix until it got removed. Now I’m just watching it again since I’m on Disney+
At season 3 now, still loving it lol

Anakin seemed to just “tolerate” obi-wan
Moments later: 6:08
Fair. I also didn't include several other scenes of Anakin complaining about Obi-Wan. I felt the point came across well enough.
Nater Tot I think you’re trying to hard to push your narrative of prequels bad clone wars good. It’s clear in episode 3 that they have become close friends seen in their banter in the beginning and seen in obi wans struggle to face him. You could say that a lot of this was added by clone wars which I 100% agree with, it brought so much to the prequels but stand alone episode 3 still gives me chills every god damn time and that’s on George and film team not the clone wars tv series
@@maxchunder8098 not really trying to push any narrative. It's an opinion I appreciate you coming by and sharing yours though. I will work better to make my points more concise in future videos.
Nater Tot oy thanks mate to be honest I don’t even really know what a narrative is, I’m kinda stupid. overall enjoyed the video though and excited to see what else you put out.
@@maxchunder8098 I appreciate the comment back. I have no issue with anyone having objections or opinions different than mine. As long as you can get those opinions across without being rude, disrespectful or callous about it (this is mainly towards other people). I'm in for multi-part breakdowns/reviews for each season of The Clone Wars.
That's a great idea. I'm definitely down for unique ways of approaching it.
5 is no doubt the best season. Its got Ahsoka leaving the jedi order. The rebellion of Onderaan (Saw and Steela Gurerra). And it starts off with Maul and savage with Hondos men.

Me: Every episode of The Clone Wars is great in its own way. There's something to like in every single one.
Episode: Doesn't acknowledge that Ahsoka Tano exists.
Me: This is the worst thing Star Wars has ever put out.
This is a joke. Ahsoka is literally just one of my favorite characters of all time, and this was how I felt when I first started watching the series as a kid.
"So all you can tell me is that I will find Jabba at Jabba's palace?" Yeah, that lines up.
I love how you tied it right into the scene of Ben describing Anakin to Luke. Great video and your editing is on point. Please make as many of these as you want
Every time I watch the show I think about that scene. That scene alone really builds the show and the prequels.
Nater Tot it’s funny you mentioned Ben describing Anakin to Luke since Dave Filoni had said on the 2008 movie’s commentary how he wanted to toy around with the telltale stuff in A New Hope and give it some reality (ie: Anakin piloting some lethargic spice freighter)
determinator 94 What Luke’s uncle said was true... from a certain point of view. 🙃
@@NaterTot For me about him describing Anakin as a great pilot sums up the pod race scene along with Obi-Wan's talk with Luke in Return.
How Obi describes Anakin as already being a great pilot, pod race scene and his surprise in how strong the force was with Anakin in the mido-cholrian count scene and the Jedi room scene.
I always love going back to Obi-Wan's scenes in the OT and how they set it up in the prequels.
I couldn't agree more. Clone Wars is MASSIVELY underrated!
This is the best review/video essay of the clone wars I've found. It does it's best to succinctly and calmly explain how this series is so brilliant
I still get chills when I hear: “Nara, it means brother.”
Part II, III and however many more you need please
George, I'm working on it! Feel free to share it and give it an upvote. The more views, the more activity, the more inclined I am to go back to part 2!
The new trilogy is like a friend who becomes your roommate and is parasitizing off of you and slowly destroying the house, but you don't have the nerve to kick him out.
Rising Horizon Gaming Same thing...
Rising Horizon Gaming why wouldn’t he sell his creation for money? That’s like scolding an artist for selling a painting or a a writer for selling a book. You seem like quite the hypocrite.
TheThreatenedSwan that sounds like a personal problem
JUST STRIKE HIM DOWN! DEW IT! LET THE HATE FLOW THROUGH YOU! DEW IT! DEW IT! DEW IT!
tbh The Force Awakens was a great set up for a new trilogy, but obviously TLJ "killed off" major plot devices too soon and for no good reason. Snoke, Luke, Phasma, Holdo even had potential. TROS was their attempt at cleaning the mess up. it wasn't a great attempt but it wasn't as awful as fans are treating it.
Thank you so much. You've something crystallized for me. For all three sequel trilogy movies, people have been surprised that I've enjoyed them so much. This is why. I've saying they go well the books, comics and games, but the truth is that they've been hitting on themes from Clone Wars and concluding threads in this series. It truly is the clone wars that cemented my love for star wars during the same time that the new movies divided many. These are a must watch.
Clone wars is amazing and I’d like to hear your thoughts on Anakin Ahsoka and Obi wan in a separate video because they’re my favorite characters and Anakin is a great character due to the clone wars
The clones themselves and there personalities were my favorite part of the show
Clone wars somehow took the prequel films and turned them to a memey good to actual good
I agree!
one time in some youtube comments i saw like a quote that said something like "clone wars is made by people that love star wars but hate the prequels" ( of course they probably dont actually HATE the prequels) and the more i think about it the more true that quote becomes
ROTS was always good
@@drewlbers can't argue with that
@@drewlbers I think it is fairly entertaining and has a lot of quality moments.
The Clone Wars series introduced me to the Star Wars universe and no matter what anybody says, it's the best Star Wars content out there.
The 'news reel' at the beginning of each episode would pump me up so much, the nostalgia from the short clip in this video is unreal.
Back when The Clone Wars was still during its early days, like perhaps the year of 2013 iirc, I thought that the show looked ugly, and I was also not into Star Wars at the time.
I made a grave mistake sleeping on this show when I was younger, and I'm redeeming myself by binge-watching it.
Luckily in my case, I watched the clone wars before the revenge of the sith, so I ended up really loving revenge of the sith
That's how you should experience it honestly. My god, order 66 is so much more heart breaking after watching the clone wars
Same. I feel like I have to emotionally prepare to watch Revenge of the Sith because of the Clone Wars.
I didn't see it until after, but I still loved Revenge of the Sith. It was the first Star Wars movie that I ever saw premiere that was actually good. It felt like the story that George Lucas wanted to tell all along regarding the prequels.
It doesn't really fit. Revenge of the Sith has the impression that Anakin Skywalker never had an apprentice.
Same!
I really like that in german every character has the same voice as in the moies.
I love that moment at 7:33 where the magna guard gets worried about the outcome of the fight just by his movements
Such a good review for such a great show! I’m OBSESSED with the Clone wars and it’s TOTALLY underrated!
So Disney's agenda was empowering females and yet they ignore Ahsoka, their best one? instead, purple hair and rose?
Star Wars is filled with powerful female characters: Leia, Padme, Ahsoka, Aayla Secura and Mara Jade.
JJ Abrams is just a pathetic and unoriginal clown who should never have gotten close to the franchise.
The best one from the Disney era is the one who made Rogue One
You have just exectuted order 66 in Disney.
Exactly!
I’d assume at this point in the story, Ahsoka’s dead. That said, she’s a lot better than that Holdo character.
Don't forget Ventress now that's a story arc.
