So Richard was in prison for 16 years for just one robbery he didn't commit, but some people who caused deaths or murdered get less than 10 years? Makes sense.

Heard a case recently where a repeated offender of child SA only got 2 years of jail, and when he was out was starting to play up his old tricks, when confronted by a man in the neighborhood the man shot him and killed him. The man got 40+ years.
So child SA multiple offenses? 2 years
Ridding life from that man? 40 years. Sounds about right

What is really scary about Richard's case is that he was in for 16 years for a robbery, while in Seattle last spring a murderer got sentenced to 14 years in prison.

I've seen that discrepancy so much over the years, I finally concluded that the courts tend to value money more than human life.
@@LockDOTspot I don't mind 16+ years for an armed robbery, just don't like how the penalties seem inconsistent. A quick search of local news had a guy get a sentence of three years after getting caught for a home invasion with a gun, tied the people up and stole stuff from the house and stole their car.
Richard's case is a prime example of why eyewitness testimony shouldn't be the sole factor in convicting someone. Not only do people have terrible memories, but they're notoriously bad at distinguishing unfamiliar faces.
Maybe so in what you said but your reasoning doesn't make sense, not in this case anyway, since Richard and Rick DO look alike so apparently the eyewitness was right and got the description pretty spot on and even heard his friend calling him Rick. It's not the eyewitness who got anything wrong it's the cops for putting what looked like an identical twin in the lineup instead of Rick.

100%. I dont blame the witnesses at all because they do look INCREDIBLY similar and the fact this case even happened in the first place is incredible odds and he had horrible luck. People misremember things constantly and our brains are literally trained to fill in the gaps of the things we see both in the moment and our memory.
Unfortunately, even surveillance footage would point to it being him because they look exactly alike. And who is thinking "Oh, maybe its a guy that looks EXACTLY like him" Its kind of terrifying knowing that you could technically (even by the smallest percentage) be arrested for a "dopplegangers" crime. Maybe taking selfies everywhere you go isnt such a bad practice lol. At least youd have proof that you werent at the scene of the crime.

Except the guy who did it looks identical to Richard with the same first name. This is why the cops need to investigate alibis seriously. Because this stuff happens. Doppelgängers exist and criminals can look like innocent people. They never took Richards alibi seriously. Despite all of the people verifying it and evidence saying it wasn’t him, the cops refused to admit that they fucked up and arrested the wrong person. The saddest thing is that they probably STILL believe Richard is guilty and lying. That type of thinking in detectives is part of the reason why the justice system is so fucked up. Detectives get stuck on a suspect and refuse to admit that they were wrong. They won’t investigate anything or anyone else and the innocent person ends up getting arrested and before technology advanced in the 90s-00s, the person was made to look guilty and usually was convicted. Either because of the prosecutions side pulling something shady, the public defender was either incompetent or agreed/working with the prosecution and helped get the conviction by doing a bad job, telling the jury/judge or convincing the guy/girl to take the plea deal

Richard's case was more than just an "oopsie" and I'm absolutely furious and so sad on his behalf. Was his alibi not taken into account at all?? Shoddy, shoddy police work. Imagine going to prison for 16 years because you LOOK like the person who did it.

When you have multiple witnesses (I don't remember if he said how many but it seemed like a lot of them) are certain that someone is the perpetrator and the alibi is friend and/or family the witnesses who don't know each other or him will be believed first because they have no reason to lie. Friends/family have a motive to lie. If there were receipts (gas/food) that were ignored then I would say shoddy work but if it was witness v witness then the outcome is understandable. Tragic but understandable.

I saw a model in an ad on the internet and there was my wife in the picture with two other models. I have showed the picture to everyone we know and everyone points out my wife in the photo. The problem is that my wife isn’t a model and never posed for that picture. The model is my wife’s doppelgänger for sure.
Even their smiles were the same and my wife has a very unique smile. Even she thought it was her. Usually, the person rarely thinks the other person looks like them, because we know our own faces so well. My wife could not see a difference, she had even the same color hair and it was long and straight just like her. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a perfect doppelgänger in my life. They are a perfect match.

Your wife’s doppelgänger is crazy also. I am running a few things over in my mind. Has a DNA test been done? You have to start somewhere. Is it possible the two women (twins) had been given up for adoption? I’ve seen people that look like other people but something is always off a little bit. These stories are so uncanny. I hope Richard may try to help others like him.
I hope you and your wife can just have a good life and laugh about this with no harm done. I think I’d at least try a DNA test but that would require the other woman to also take the test to get a match.
@@Waterfalls2016 in don’t know, but I would love to have a facial recognition software scan both faces. I’d guarantee you it would be a match. I am a professional artist and sculptor, have been for over 40 years and the two look identical to me. It’s really freaky, because I’m really good with faces and seeing the differences and it had to be one of the closest matches I have ever seen. Every one of our friends and relatives when shown the picture immediately said it was my wife. It’s uncanny. I’ve never met my doppelgänger, but I’m sure there’s someone out there, they claim that each one of us have at least 4 doppelgängers somewhere in the world.
Oh I have a doppelgänger, they aren’t nice and they come with lots of tricks. I’ve no advice though..
Current scientists have estimated that each one of us has at least six lookalikes across the world, each one will have different dna but look exactly like us.

I think it’s really encouraging to see Ballen Studios supporting other “spooky story creators” and working with BedTime Stories podcast - so many communities on UA-cam are kinda toxic where similar creators can start to tear each other down. That second story is tragic. Mistaken identity for a crime is horrifying, and $1M for losing 16 years of your life, coming out of prison a freed man with no marketable skills, place of residence and potentially loss of family who would turn their back on you because you are a "criminal" is a cruel fate.
Indeed... The biggest problem with the justice system is that you don't have to be guilty, to be guilty. Even if you never spend a day in jail or prison. Cops arrest you for something, your picture gets thrown up on the evening news, BOOM you're automatically guilty the rest of your life. And they don't follow up, the most will do is have a little article on the 8th page of the news paper saying "man found not guilty during trial." Then out of the few people that actually see it, 50% of them will still think he's guilty and they just let him out on the streets to do it again, 40% will think, well maybe he didn't do that, but he's guilty of something, cops don't just go around arresting people. and maybe 10% will think it's an example proving the system works... When in reality, 100% of them are wrong.
Dude should have been given $50 million and an island in the tropics.

Most of the cases you hear of someone "wrongly accused" is often media framing and lawyers using technicalities to get truly guilty people out of prison. There's a whole organization that does this, The Innocent Project, they get people out of prison due to technicalities, emotional and political manipulation, and when you look into most of the cases it's obvious the person is guilty. What happens is a judge looks at the case after enough pressure, decides the person has served enough time or there was a hiccup in proceedings that could come back to haunt the courts even if the person is clearly guilty, so they then make a deal to free the prisoner. Then media and organizations such as the Innocent Project frame it as if they were innocent the whole time, there's a lot of money in the innocence industry. Truly innocent people such as Richard in this case are very rare.
That's the sad truth about life and the criminal system
There was a man recently released from wrongfully being in prison for 50 years and was compensated with less than $200K
I'm personally SO glad to see him getting back to his roots with the classic "places you can't go and people who went anyways" and the "photos with creepy back stories"

Exactly. These series/lists, like places you cant go, photos and videos with backstories and ESPECIALLY Missing 411 (I loved that one) are the reason I started watching his videos. It was super disappointing for me to see, that he subsequently abandoned almost all of these concepts and started to focus on single-story videos.
I also don't like how his content shifted primarly to the real-crime stories, where some of the stories aren't even that strange or mysterious, but are only dark. To a point where I don't even watch all of his videos, like I used to. I was so glad to see that this was a video from the "Photos" series, very welcomed and refreshing.

That second story, DAMN! I'm gobsmacked that not only do they looks so alike, they chose the same hair and beard styles and they both ended up in the same prison, at the same time. The world is a crazy place. I'm glad Richard got exonerated but 1mil for stealing 16 years of someone's life is chump change. I hope he can have a happy and peaceful life now.

It’s really chump change because divided by 16 (yrs) equals $62,500. Now add in taxes, lawyer fees etc and he walks away with somewhere around high $500k - low $600k if he is lucky and I am being generous with these #’s
So hr basically walked away at $34,375 x 16yrs.

As a writer and author your short story telling form is so wonderful, real pleasure to listen to. It really brings me back to when I was a kid and we'd tell ghost stories...only yours are - to say the least - constructed better.
My doppelganger has been plaguing for the last 50 years! In college, I was slapped, punched in the gut, yelled at from women who I never met before, went fancy restauraunts that I have never been before with girlfriends and even the wifey, and then host saying "welcome back, Nice to see you again!", or when I go to TSA security scanning and they say "didn't you just came through a minute ago?", or I pick up a to go meal from a restauruant and asked for my order and they say that I picked it up 10 minutes ago like they were very sure. I get the usualy, " have we met before because you look very familiar and they try to go back and say, High school?, did you work for..? are you this person's cousin? etc. Happens like 25 times a year.
Wtf? Wow, that frequent... What city do you live in?🤔 How riveting, so would you actually *want* to meet them? Just curious

The second story freaked me out. I have a doppelganger I have never met. I had similar things happen to me. She even drove a similar car. I always joked that I hoped she'd never rob a bank because people would swear it was me. This poor guy actually had that happen to him. He deserved a lot more than a million. I hope he's doing well.

I have a doppelgänger too. Apparently in Florida, I’m in BC Canada. I was bartending the usual crew of guests. A friend yells out to me “ how did you beat me home. I just left Florida this morning ! “. I was supposedly partying it up in the same Florida bar, he walked past “me” and winked and said chat in a few mins? How cool your here!! When he came back from the bathroom “I” had left. Very spooky to us both.

I have one and my Mom has one and they both live in my city. My Mom was stopped by the police because the lady left the local hospital and the Drs sent the cops to see if she was alright. This month I saw the woman walking past a restaurant I was at. And a while ago I was mistaken by an employee at coffee chain and was almost given her employee discount

Quick story about my own doppelganger. In the late 90's/early 2000's, I made some friends online and ended up working with them collectively for a software publisher. One fellow was from Australia, and myself from Canada. When our photos were displayed to the team, everyone who saw us asked immediately if my Aussie friend and I were brothers. Even he and I laughed, we looked the same, had the same habits, drank lots of beer, were martial artists, outdoorsmen, it was uncanny. Anyway, to make a long story short, he and I became very close friends, living on opposite sides of the planet, and we are still very close friends to this day, 25 years later at the time of this post. Yes, my doppelganger and I are real life friends. If that ain't a cool story, I don't know what is. Great video as always, cheers everyone!

The doppelganger story is extra crazy because in some of the folklore, the doppelganger shows up with the explicit purpose of killing you and taking over your life. Obviously that didn't happen but the doppelganger did still ruin his life for almost 2 decades.
He was lucky that he and the doppelganger were housed in the same prison. Besides, he was compensated $1 million although no amount of money can bring the 16 years of his life back.
The only place I ever heard that about a doppelganger was in AD&D, never in any real world folklore or mythology.
Doppelgängers are supernatural creatures. A person looking similar to you is not a doppelgänger, it's just a person looking similar. The supernatural ones are said to bring misfortube.
Yeah... when I met my Dobleganger face to face... we were identical in every way except he was black hair and black eyes, and I was blonde hair and blue eyes. To boot, I had never before seen anybody with black eyes. Our scars and moles matched identically. It freaked me out at first. He then had me go to his house, and sent me into the kitchen alone to meet his Mom. MARK! What have you done to your hair!?!?!? ...Except I was not Mark! lool...

People are always asking me why I didn't acknowledge them at the grocery store, or apologizing for being rude and not saying hello when they saw me at the local Chinese Buffet. This lady has confused two exes, neighbors, and even my brothers. They tell me she is identical to me. Long blonde hair, same face, dresses the same way I do. I have yet to see her. I hope she never commits a crime or they're coming for me!

the doppelgänger story is so creepy! My mom moved a few cities away and on 3 different occasions while visiting her, I was approached by people I didn’t know. They asked how I was, gave me hugs and wondered how my father was doing. I would play along, trying not to be rude or make the situation awkward for them. The only deduction I can make is that I have a doppelgänger out there lol. I wish I could meet this person and see how much we look alike!

Man that second story gets me, I've actually met my doppelgänger when I was at college. One of the girls in my dorm stopped dead when she first met me and swore I looked exactly like her cousin. Later on in the semester he came to town to visit and we quite literally bumped into each other in the local mall. Freaked us both out because we even reacted similarly to each other, it was like looking into a mirror. Folks around us were thinking it was some kind of a skit type thing. The thought that I could be punished for that guy's actions or vice versa is really scary.

I had a dobleganger in school. he was 3 years behind me, and the ONLY difference was, I had blonde hair and blue eyes, he had black hair and black eyes. But even our scars and moles matched identically. I also knew two people were were doblegangers to each other...both in the same Military Occupational Specialty field, both in the USMC. They even spoke identically. I met the second guy decades after meeting the first guy--and I could already finish his sentences for him--I felt like I had known him for decades...

This is either due to widespread retardation or some humans are completely incapable of perceiving details.
Also met my doppelgänger. He was friends with my cousin. Random people would come up to me like I was him, or asked if I knew him.

I was just thinking the same! That is only 62,500/yr. If someone said they would pay me that but I have to give them my entire life, I would say "hell no".
Im not sure how old he was, but it is possible he could have gone to college or a trade school and made that kind of money for those 16 yrs. He would also still have that career or skill to make him money through the rest of his life, while contributing to retirement. Losing 16 yrs of retirement contributions means you are pretty well screwed. He also could have been free after work to visit family, go home, and do what he wanted.
Now he has 1 mil, but probably no marketable skill to make a decent wage, no compounding retirement savings, and no equity. So he loses valuable life experiences and his financial future is jeopardized.
Maybe he never planned to do any of that so this is much more than he ever could have made, but the payout should probably be based on what the average person is capable of.
it does sound like not very much, but when i did that math thats 62k a year which is above the average in the USA so...he at least has the money he could have made (i know it doesnt make up for the horrible conditions and what not but...still....hes not broke.)
$6250 per yr for 16 yrs equals $1 million....Maybe the state took into account that Richard Was given room and board for 16 yrs ...not ever enough for wrongful conviction though.

The stories you research and put together are so fascinating, the way you deliver the stories are so great I have been listening to one video after the next. Some of these stories have to be basis for a lot of horror movies...just one other thing your style of talking, hand gestures and outfits remind me a lot of Luke from Gilmore girls, i kept trying to figure out who you remind me of 😅 its a total compliment 😊

I have my own doppelganger story. Upon returning to the US from being stationed in Turkey in 1981, I picked a conversion van that I had bought prior to leaving Turkey and was driving from Charleston, SC to my home town in NM. It's a long drive with 2 young children, so I stopped to stay the night in a hotel (I don't remember what town it was in now). When I went to check in, the person at the desk said something to the effect of "Oh, you're back again". I told him I had never been there before in my life and explained my cross country trip. We both thought it was interesting, but that was the end of it. After another day of travel, I had to stop again for the night (again, no idea what town these many years later). The exact same conversation took place at this hotel! The clerk said, "Oh, you're back again". I was pretty freaked out by then. I told him the story of the previous night encounter. We came to the same conclusion that I was following my doppelganger across the country, but just a day behind. Weirdest thing that has ever happened to me.

Never hurts to ask if they would relay a message starting out I kno this is weird but too weird to just ignore. If u would like to have a glimpse as well here’s my number. That doppelgänger story was amazing! He is so lucky that Ricky got put in the same prison so he could prove his innocence. You can tell they are two different people, though. They looked a little bit alike but they weren’t doppelgängers, I didn’t think.

When Steve was talking to Richard, I immediately assumed he was describing Richard's long-lost identical twin, and I found it amusing that these two brothers would meet in a prison together. My heart sunk when I heard the story turn from a comedy to a tragedy when I learnt Richard was innocent of any crime. I'm glad he was released and compensated, but I don't think any amount of money could undo the agony of being imprisoned for 16 years for a crime you didn't do.

I cannot imagine the dread of being sent to prison and spending time there around dangerous men for something you didn’t do.
That has happened too many times. Some times it was later when they could test the DNA that they found out he was innocent. I think I remembered one that was executed then they found out he was innocent.
I've seen more than one man who had been wrongly convicted and sent to prison admit after being exonerated that although they were innocent of the crime they'd gone to prison for, there were others that they should have been there for committing.

The bright side of this is he made lots of friends during his prison time then he was given a million dollars to jumpstart his brand new life, but its still sad he will forever carry the memory of being imprisoned for other persons crime who wont face an additional punishment cuz the case was too old.

I'm loving this return to the old school Mrballen style. The photos with disturbing backstories, and 3 strange, but true stories are what first caught my attention.
I think it’s just what he does sometimes he does 3 stories sometimes a whole story based on something. It must depend on what interests him and what comes across his table wherever he outsources his stories. It’s probably not easy to find the stories he does but when he does he has to format them in a way that fits in the videos. It sounds like a hard job which is why he probably only posts 1 per week but I love his channel because it’s always something interesting that comes to his mind and he tells it.
He never changed.... he's always done these. His first videos he ever made were also usually one story true crime or supernatural accounts.

The horrible story of Richard is why you NEVER talk to Police! NEVER voluntarily go to their office or station to "clear things up". If police ever insist on talking to you SAY YOU WANT A LAWYER and REFUSE to answer any questions! Because LEOs are some of the LAZIEST people on the planet. And they will not care if you are actually Innocent. They only care about closing cases. And even worse, LEOs are protected by Qualified Immunity which will shield them from lawsuits or prosecution!

I still can't get over how quick it went from "we upload 4-5 times a week" to " 2-3 times" to "once a week" when I discovered this channel a couple years ago and binge watched/listened every old episode. Those were the days when I could make a day at work fly by by listening to story after story. I still love the channel and story telling it just isn't the same having to wait a week for new ones. Plus, I don't think anyone could let the stories pile up for months and months just to binge them again.

John released a crazy number of videos per week, to build up his library of videos. It is not sustainable to make that amount of content on an ongoing basis. He's part of three foundations, has TWO podcasts now, the UA-cam video & has to find time to be a husband & father. ❤

Story #2 always gives me goosebumps. You can’t even blame the robbery victim or the witnesses. This was just a horrific situation. So awful. Richard deserved way more than 1M. 16 years of his life… gone.

@@thewind6047really? I blame a prosecutor and judge that ignored his alibi only to believe an"eye witness" in spite of the absolute fact that eye witnesses are wildly varied in what they see. In study after study it came out the same, trust physical evidence not witnesses.
I feel bad for Richard. It's really unreasonable that he had to do all those 16 years for no reason. And to only get 1 million dollars for it is even more crazy. He should've been given 1 million dollars for each year.

The doppelgänger story is horrific on so many levels. Besides the fact that his alibi wasn’t even checked, who goes to prison for 16 years for robbery? Especially the first offense. I’m just floored by that. Take away all the botched police work by not even checking an alibi…the 16 years seems harsh when no one was hurt. No crooks shouldn’t be excused, first time or not, but 16 years? Just wow.
Why do u think all the prisons are overflowing with so called criminals. they will give you 20 years for just smoking a joint in front of your own house. System is made to get more and more people in prison. Its almost like a business. Oh wait, it is a business...

I don’t think it was his first offense. At any rate, he’s back in prison now for illegal carry of a firearm.
He'd be convicted of robbery, stealing a car and sold drugs previously, that's what did it I imagine. And given it was two decades ago, his race probably didn't help.
He probably had a record already, since he was initially identified by a lineup- they pull in past offenders for lineups. Either way he shouldn’t have been charged for that crime if he had an alibi.

I have a specific memory of being at the zoo with my parents about 40 years ago and I still remember it like yesterday. As we were walking up this flight of stairs I came face to face with my twin. It was a 7 year old boy like me and we both looked at each other in amazement. It only lasted about 10 seconds but etched into my memory. We were both shocked and my parents pulled me along as we watched each other disappear into the crowds. He just shrugged like " I have no idea, dude".

That happened to me while I was driving. I stopped at a red light. I turned my head & a girl who looked exactly like me even wearing similar clothes was standing on the corner. She looked startled & we just kept staring at each other until I almost got hit by an oncoming car because I apparently took my foot off of the brake.

The legal system screws up and convicts the innocent more frequently than you would believe. ☹️
The resemblance between the 2 men is very rough. Richard's features are far more sculpted and angular than Ricky's. There's no way someone could make such a mistake unless they simply did not care. Richard was a person of color who was probably from a marginalized neighborhood as well. So frankly, the witnesses were willing to chance a false conviction because he was low-value anyhow. Which is again reflected in the measly $1 million settlement.
There are guys of the same complexion from nicer neighborhoods who've been awarded 6 figures just for being falsely arrested and interrogated. Not even convicted or imprisoned 1 day. But in the instance I have in mind, it could be proven that due process was transgressed. In Richard's case this was harder to prove which technically accounts for the lower settlement. But I guess it really pays to be an affluent black guy because one of these days the criminal justice system will have to pay you for false arrest with minimal inconvenience on your part.

It's not hard to see where the mistake comes from. They do look really similar, and in a FREAKIN' ROBBERY, when someone (presumably) has you at gunpoint, there's no notice given to the tiny details. It has nothing to do with color, you clown.

Let us not forget that there are still people sitting in prisons right now for crimes they did not commit and it is unlikely that they will get lucky the way this man did by finding exculpatory evidence. It was just pure luck that after 16 long years his doppleganger ended up in his prison and he was able to lay eyes on him and figure out what happened. One thing WORSE than spending 16 years in prison is spending 19 years in prison which was his original sentence. So yea he got lucky that he was able to get out a bit earlier AND clear his name.

Doppelgängers have always been one of my biggest irrational fears. For some reason it just creeps me out more than anything else. I can’t believe he only got 1mil, that’s completely fucked.

It freaks me out because I know I have one, and they live, or lived, in a town nearby. A close friend asked me why I ignored her when getting off the train. I hadn’t been on the local commuter train in more than 10 years!

@@MrSeanman30 many are okay with it, wanting to make sure that whatever happened to them or their loved one doesn't happen to anyone else. Those that aren't okay with the video segment can email Mr. Ballen and ask that the video be removed, which he will do. In the case of videos with three stories, he'll delete the offending video, and post a short of the remaining story or stories on a different channel.

Story #2: Their similarity is stunning. Not only do they have the same skin colour and facial appearance, they also adopt the same hair style, beard trim, and have the same asymmetry (head tilt, raised ear, raised eye and mouth). Even in profile, they are very similar. *And* sent to the same prison. There's something so spooky about this.

Usually Sannakji is served with the octopus chopped up into smaller pieces with sesame seeds on top. It also doesn’t usually come with the head, just the tentacles moving and chopped. It’s also moving around the place but because it’s chopped up, its mobility is limited and safer to eat. TBH I’m surprised they served a whole live octopus . This is my first time hearing it be served that way.

Just here to say that, if I'm not mistaken, Otoya left a message too, before he died, I think it was an old phrase directly related to something some Samurai said when going to battle, or something... I read the story many years ago, so pardon my bad memory, if I'm not recalling it right. XD
