For the mom with the 4 year old. Firm boundaries. Once you set them you’ll get pushback for a bit, but once they see that the boundaries will not budge they learn to accept them. Age and situational appropriate consequences for continually pushing the boundaries. Look for the ‘why’ behind a behavior and try to address that. Teach them to give their feelings a name in hindsight (not in the moment). For example - you were very angry so you hit mommy. It’s okay to be angry but hands are not for hitting so instead do (insert appropriate outlet). And the best way to teach is to model. So when you interact with them or others behave and treat them the way you want them to. It’s so hard and some days I feel like the worst mom and others I see glimpses of the results of my hard work and its so rewarding.

Spare the rod spoil the child has been misunderstood for just about as long as its existed!
The saying refers to back in ancient biblical times when they had flocks of sheep and the sheep herder would have a rod to help guide the sheep when a sheep got out of line/ away from the herd. They used the rod to guide the sheep back, gently. They did not hit or beat the sheep back into place.
So many people throughout the years have used that saying as a justification to hit/spank their children when what that saying literally means you are too *gently* guide them where they should go. Using examples and boundaries and relevant humane consequences!

I tried to be patient but I was not always patient and tolerant of deliberate acting out. My kids were basically neurotypical however. When I lost it and lashed out, though, I did apologize. Respect had to be earned. I was a divorced mom of 4 kids with an ex who tried to pit the kids against me when he was around. I had all the raising of the kids good times and bad so THAT had to be shut down. I listened to my kids. Even when they were not aware. It was a fine line to walk. I had to stay close so I knew what was going on. Its hard, but worth the effort.

I was in labor with my son for 31 hours. 31 freaking hours! And this was back in 2008. They started losing his heart rate after 2 hours of pushing so they ended up using the forceps to pull him out as well. Let me tell you, that was a real traumatizing experience and I was afraid to ever have kids again. Haha he weighed 8 lb 1 oz. Then I had another kid in 2012 but I was only in labor for 9 hours. Which was like nothing compared to my son. Only push for like half an hour with her and she weighed 9 lb 12.7 Oz. Hahaha the reason that my son was so much more difficult though is because his head was big! Hahaha my mother said that she had the same problem with my brother back in 87. His head was too big but they didn't use forceps or anything they actually did an emergency C-section for that. I'm glad I didn't need one.

PS: WHAT !!?? does she think about the abject lunacy and bent toward cruel bigotry coming from her (former) son in law? More rhetorical as I know you don’t want to stir things up in public forums - which is healthy - I just see her as both so protective of you and her grandbabies … but also is SO kind, accepting & open-minded about all human beings and the differences we both choose and naturally have. I’d imagine she is appalled. As am I.

Laura, when your mom was talking about your birth story... I wondered if you've heard the statistics about colicy babies (babies who cry and cannot be soothed in early childhood) and neurodivergence? The more difficult the birth is, the more likely to be neurodivergent. Same thing for colicky babies! It's so interesting to hear your birth story it really correlates to the stats about neurodivergence and birthing issues.

I joined POF and the first and only person I said hi to is now my husband. When I met him and saw his gorgeous smile and I was pleased he didn't use it in his picture otherwise he might have been snapped up lol. Mom ain't no 'lesbo'. Virtually all adolescent girls go through a stage of forming intense relationships with other girls. 'Best friend' feelings are a stage in becoming sexual beings. Normal psychological and sexual development doesn't mean girls are lesbians, although there is theory that lesbian psychology is an arrested adolescent stage of development, which is also common in developmental disorders such as autism, ADHD and neurodiversity in general.

Spare the rod , spoil the child has nothing to do with violence. Its talking about discipline. Its talking about the shepard and his sheep. The Sheppard does not hit the sheep with the staff. He guides them.

I wish I had a relationship with my mom like you have with yours. It makes me happy to watch you two interact and how easy it is for you to just talk to each other, makes me sad at the same time that my mother and I don't and never will have a "healthy" mother/daughter relationship.

I was like Colleen when I had to fly to a different state to protect my sibling.
Unfortunately my sibling zagged a different way ...
Mother said a lot of wholesome things, even just believing that there's some decisions that shouldn't be left to noobies.

Watching your mom … this is so good. My ex husband was raised on goat milk back in the 60’s.
