      I think you'll find the book "American Rifle" by Alexander Rose fascinating. In it, he discusses how important riflemen and the Kentucky/Pennsylvania rifle were to us and our identity.
      From there it further discusses gunsmithing and the evolution of our battle rifles. An awesome book!

    I so want to take the online classes for this. I'm fascinated by guns, and I'd love to learn more about them. I'm enthusiastic, but I'm also terrified. I'm terrified of being a bad student. I know nothing about taking a gun apart and putting it back together. Is there a place for someone like me, a truly inexperienced beginner in the gunsmithing field, or will I need some level of experience before hand

When the round comes out of magazine and slides into the chamber off the feed ramp but the primer side of the round hangs and doesnt slide up the back of the slide at the ejector. Is that caused by poor magazine springs or a poor slide recoil spring or both the recoil ans maf springs ? Their is no physical issues with slide or ejector ....

    Hey Sonoran Desert Institute I was interested in your programs but I was a little worried that I wouldn't get in based on my previous college performance. I started my college experience early because I graduated high school early so my maturity level wasn't on par with my peers but now that I'm a little bit older I want to get back in the swing of school again and your programs look very interesting. Is there any information I could look up or that can be provided to me to help put my mind at ease?

    • @SdiEdu
      @SdiEdu  7 років тому +8

      Absolutely. Don't stress too much--your previous college experience is not used as an indicator for your acceptance at SDI. In some cases (for example, if you're using VA benefits), we'll need to have a copy of your official college transcripts on file, but again, they won't have any effect on your admission.
      Here's the official Admissions Policy:
      Applicants seeking admission must meet the following admission requirements prior to the start of the first course at SDI:
      Must have earned a high school diploma, a GED or recognized equivalent*
      Must have access to a computer with an Internet connection for the web-based programs and meet the minimum technology, hardware, and software requirements outlined in the catalog
      Must have the ability to study in English
      Must have the physical and mental ability needed to successfully complete the program
      Must meet the eligibility requirements for the selected program of study
      For Firearms Technology programs, applicant must be a US citizen or permanent resident.
      Applicants are subject to a background check prior to and/or during their program of study.
      * Equivalents include completion of secondary school through homeschooling as defined by state law, or having earned an equivalent to a US high school diploma at an international high school according to approved Foreign Evaluation services.
      Applicants must submit the following prior to admission:
      Application for admission, including student signature on the Enrollment Agreement
      Attestation of earning high school diploma, GED, or recognized equivalent**
      Copy of front and back of a valid government-issued photo identification (i.e. driver’s license or passport)
      Request(s) for official transcript(s) from other colleges and universities from which transfer credit evaluation will be conducted
      Statement of Eligibility
      Code of Conduct
      **SDI may also require, at its discretion, that an applicant or student provide a high school transcript, high school diploma, and/or evidence of passing the GED or state certificate awarded.
      Hope that helps! We'd love to have you as a student. Feel free to reach out to us at admissions@sdi.edu for assistance with your enrollment process!

    I would prefer to do this line of work rather than continue in the medical field. I am a veteran, former navy corpsman. Medical field is ugly right now. I live far away from the school and have no idea what the job market is for this type of work. I have gone to two trade schools so far and both have closed permanently shortly after I graduated.
    I would appreciate some more information as to the security of this work and pay. I am actively researching this school currently, but any and all information about this school and the prospects of gunsmithing is welcome.
    I keep hearing great things about each line of work but each one turned out to either not match or not be a feasible career.
    God bless you and hope to find out more soon.

      Hi! As part of our Associate of Science in Firearms Technology degree program or our Advanced Gunsmithing Certificate program, students may choose one of our Advanced Armorer courses as their Capstone topic. In those Advanced Armorer Courses (the student will select between an AR-10, AR-15 or 1911 platform, by the way), students receive an 80% lower, jig, and other tools and materials needed to complete the platform build. So yes, you'd mill out the 80% lower then build out the rest of it as well. The Advanced Armorer courses can also be taken as stand-alone courses. Please email us at admissions@sdi.edu if you have any other questions!! :)

      Sonoran Desert Institute hi there i was wondering if it is possible to make a multicaliber rifle one that shoots 308 - 50cal or 308 - 338 variations like that without the need for a conversion kit or a barrel exchange. i had the medusa m47's design in mind would that be possible and if not why???? thankyou for you time and happy holidays.

      I'm excited to start the course. I'm going to do the Associate degree in firearms technology. My admissions lady name lisa recommended that particular course because I'm wanting to get into opening my own business. I plan on doing all the courses that you all offer to further my education as I go along. I have a question for you all. Today I'm picking up a set of gas rings for my AR-15 bolt to change out those 3 rings today. It is a very simple process to do but my question is what type of tool should I use to keep me from fumbling around with the rings? A set of tweezers or a small screw driver to take them off and slid the new 3 in place? If I had a dental pick or something it would be a no brainer to use that but unfortunately I do not have one.

    • @SdiEdu
      @SdiEdu  5 років тому +1

      @@bradslone8511 We asked Kip for some help on that and here's his answer: "He is right the dental pick is the way to go and you can get them really cheap at Walmart or Harbor Freight. If that is not an option then you can use a fine point ice pick, small finishing nail, thin blade knife or even a paper clip or a very small screwdriver like you use for glasses or jewelers-type jobs and lift the ring up and over the bolt knuckle (holds the rings in place) and remove from the bolt. These rings are flexible and will come off pretty easy. Then just slide the new rings on and over the bolt and knuckle into the ring groove--no tool needed for this but use a little grease sliding over the knuckle that keeps the rings in place and that is it...One other thing, after the rings are in place use a good cleaner and remove all grease!"

    • @bradslone8511
      @bradslone8511 5 років тому

      @@SdiEdu thank you. And tell Kip I said thank you for responding to my question. I ended up finding a very small flat hollow ground screw driver and used it to put them on without any problem.. the only minor problem I had was that I somehow got one of the ends crossed over another ring and had to play with it for a minute to get all 3 in line properly. The job only took about 10 mins even with accidentally crossing one of the rings and after I put them in and resemble my bcg i did the standing test of pulling the bolt out in the forward position and set it on the floor flat on the bolt face and it stayed in position.

Our assessments are driven by quizzes, exams, and reflection assignments, which help our instructors determine whether or not our students are digesting the info they're getting in the course material. If you'd like, you can reach out to admissions@sdi.edu and one of our Admissions team members can go over in detail which courses are part of the Advanced Gunsmithing Certificate program, and what the expectations are for each.
