I just want to take a moment to acknowledge how forward-compatible the G4 Mac Cube was. This was a device that existed in the Pentium II era. (Just after the release of the PIII, actually, but the PII was still in its prime.)
It can boot from USB, can drive 1920x1080 on the digital video interface, and supports 1.5GB of RAM. For the time, that was _insane._

To be fair, those features weren't exclusive to the Cube or Apple in general. As usual with non-Apple machines, if you wanted to you could've specced out a Windows or Linux/Unix machine with the same or even better features for less than the Cube costed

    • @nickwallette6201
      @nickwallette6201 Рік тому +23

      @@resneptacle That’s not entirely true.
There are probably workstation / server boards from that era that could be upgraded to 1.5GB RAM, but the 440BX (arguably the most common PII chipset) topped out at 1GB, and the i815 (common PIII chipset) actually only supported half that.
We were _just_ starting to get into the BBS (BIOS Boot Specification) age that supported booting from things other than floppy and hard disks and add-in cards with boot ROMs (I.e., SCSI.) Whether a particular BIOS could or could not boot from the (fairly new) USB 1.1 ports depends on the vendor. But it’s likely not possible on a given board.
And, I have a PIII system with an ATI Radeon 8500 with DVI. It works OK in Windows, but gets utterly confused by EDID data from an HD or UHD monitor during boot. I don’t get the BIOS, boot loader, or even Windows boot logo screens at all. First sign of life is when it reaches the desktop, because the full driver is loaded and can explain to the hardware what to do with a supported resolution of 1920x1080.
(Edit: My workaround here was to buy an inline EDID emulator that reporter a 1280x1024 monitor instead. Then everything works. It’s a known issue with the video BIOS on that card, unlike the ATI card in the Cube.)
The G4 Cube handles all of that with finesse. So, no - as is often the case, it’s more than just an overpriced PC that can run MacOS.

I'd say that was more of Pentium III era than Pentium II era, Pentium III had been out a bit over a year before the Mac Cube and while P2 were still made and sold the last desktop Pentium II was close to 2 years old. 1133MHz Pentium 3 was released the same month as the G4 Cube. Pentium 4 was also released during the time Apple still sold the Cube.
Via Apollo Pro133 supported 1.5GB RAM and Pro133A 2.0GB RAM. SiS chipsets also did 1.5GB

Instead of just playing games i decided to try and set up a Workbench environment for document writing and image editing and general productivity work. Amiga came out during a time when these things were not settled yet and thus used different analogies and concepts to things we're used to. The desktop, for example, was called "workbench" and thus folders were indeed "drawers". And its window management has some things very unique, like being able to have multiple "screens" even with different resolutions and things only seen in other niche OSes such as RISC OS like the window with the focus not necessarily being brought to the top of the stack and gadgets to change the Z-order of the stacked windows. It does take a while to get used to it...

  • @elbiggus

Lots of definitely AmigaOS flavoured things going on there, so by your confusion I'm guessing you were never an Amiga owner! You can use the Depth gadget in the top right to bring windows forward instead of double clicking - I wish Windows allowed you to keep active windows behind inactive ones as it's actually pretty useful. The right click for menus is a hangover from when the Amiga had multiple "screens"; grabbing the title bar at the top allowed you to drag the entire screen down to reveal additional ones behind it (some applications required their own screen because they wanted to run in a specific resolution/colour depth) - sort of a proto virtual desktop, I guess. Other things I spotted are the WBStartup folder, the virtual device assigns (S:, LIBS:, T:, ENV:, etc.), a RAM disk, and the separation of "System" and "Work" drives.

This OS makes a G5 usable again. I remember trying this a few years back and being fairly impressed. It's really quick if you also replace the harddrive with a SSD. It's a fairly small operating system as it is so it loads very fast for what it is and the G5 in mine was hardly taxed doing basic stuff. But given the obvious limitations I still ponder the value of paying $79 bucks for it. A modern lixux distro on x86 hardware will likely pull ahead. That said I would be excited to see my G5 still going at it.

I notice you didn't fully notice how Workbench (early AmigaOS) menu bar buttons work for example. And that's just for starters. Yes, all apps are (sort of) in one place and libraries and system files can just be dragged and dropped but holy moly is it opaque and unintuitive in every other way IMHO. But it does have icons of any and differing at once sizes. and dude, when you click on them they change into a secondary icon AND a third when you open it. And that's all that really matters. I kind of wonder what the business application is for this. Generally the reason companies keep old machines around is because they have a piece of software on them that _has_ to run on an old OS. So changing the OS on the old machine completely defeats the purpose of using that old machine.
I was interested in this for an old Mac I have just sitting around, but since old computer hardware just can't handle modern websites, it doesn't look like this really has anything to offer over the old version of macOS already on the computer.

Morphos is an Amiga-like OS. Its written by a splinter of AmigaOS developers who had enough of the ownership and licensing in-fighting of Amiga IP.
"Drawers" comes from the Amiga Workbench (analogous to the Windows Desktop and its folders). In the Amiga environment you "do work" on your "workbench", and just like a real bench you work on, you can lay out documents, files and tools or utilities on the bench for quick access, but you can neatly store them in drawers, like you would if you had a desk with drawers that you put stuff in. It actually makes more sense than folders which in the real world usually only hold documents or pictures.
Morphos may not have the commercial rights to use "drawers" icons.
Icons can be of different size, have a non-selected image and selected image creating an animation when clicked to select them and again to open or run them, giving the user feedback about what they have done on screen.
As for the right click menu bar, this was because the Amiga could pre-emptivley multi-task (in 1985!) and each program could open its own "screen" with its own screen resolution and color depth, its own fonts, its own windows (think early virtual desktops), which you could drag down to view or keep running but completely hidden in the background. The menu bar tells you the name of the software running in that screen without the clutter of the menu options. Extremely useful in the days of 640x480 screens.
Windows can't be dragged off screen but you could have "screens" that EXCEED the actual monitor resolution and these could be viewed by pushing the mouse pointer against the edge of the monitor
Another feature of Amigaos/morphos that I miss in Windows is being able to work in a window that isn't the front most one. Once you use it, you'll see just how infuriating it is to be without it.
When you combine the ability of software to open its own screen, have other software run in the background in their *own* screen, happily pre-emptively multi-tasking away, plus the ability to work in a window that is not the front most, you find you don't need to drag windows off screen because there is much less screen clutter.
Combine all of the above with a way for multi-tasking programs to automatically communicate with one another through a scripting language (Arexx) and that is why Amiga OS was 10 years ahead of Windows and even further than MacOS.

Kind of ridiculous such an extremely niche OS is closed source and proprietary. All the dev is doing is further narrowing the amount of people who can or will use. I'd bet they'd make even more money just taking donations. And after all, for the $70 price, you can certainly buy hardware that is far beyond 2006 power, so the price also completely defeats the purpose.

No. _Extremely hard no._ Ask anybody who actually does open source development, and what you'll find out is that only the very top-tier projects make some semblance of income from donations. Haiku is leagues more popular than MorphOS and it _scrapes_ by year-over-year. MorphOS knows what they're doing.

@@adamsfusion exept i am not sure they do. it is hardly usable. you would expect that it creates new life for the power pcs. but it has very limited support, and the OS does not fly - it sometimes even feels slower than the os9/osx is on the same hardware. i know that the hardware is limited but you would expect that for such price and high version it would be optimised down to the last bit to make it a decent amiga(like) experience…
i like the idea and i myself love alternative operating systems- but a g4/g5 power pc supposed to be much more powerful than earlier amigas …. and yet it barely computes :)
and it lacks a lot of essential service and functions.
i would love to use it for coding (web mainly) but the browser is anything but usable (it reminds me on internet explorer 5 … the performance)
so for its pricetag it does not offer anything but a ‘well its different’ feeling.
i am collecting old /retro systems but i’d prefer to use os10 on my g5 imac … and windows98 on my pii pc… as they are all providing the same features and the same lack of proper interneting experience- but at least those are able to run the era specific apps without much issues
once again: i love the idea, but it seriously underdelivers for a pricetag and for a version (3.7) … :)

    • @RogerioPereiradaSilva77
      @RogerioPereiradaSilva77 Рік тому

@@mityaboy4639 The fact that using the web sucks with retro computers have nothing to do with the OS itself; it is just that modern internet requires you to deal with TLS and boatloads of memory to render Javascript-riddled web pages and those machines simply don't have the horsepower to do those things satisfactorily. It is the same experience for those running something like Antix in their old Atom-based netbooks, like those EeePCs. You just need to adjust your expectations of what computing can be.
Having said that, Morph OS has the capability to run its own native apps which indeed there are not a whole lot of it but it also has a built-in JIT emulator for m68k Amiga applications which there are many and that can be a life saver for people invested in that platform, specially considering the messy situation with the "official" AmigaOS.

Like other people have already said, this software is too expensive for what it really is as it feels like a hobby project. MorphOS absolutely should transition to being free and open source if they want people to use it, else it'll just die. Most people would install literally any supported linux distro with a lightweight DE instead of this as there is going to be a lot more support and much more software will be supported.

    • @egbront1506

If it went free, it would die as there would be no money for the developers to take it further. Free/open source just runs out of steam after a while. ReactOS and Haiku are moving at a glacial pace while others have fallen by the wayside. I guess everyone loves free when it comes to getting software but far fewer love to code the dull but necessary stuff for free.
