TOTALLY forgot about this tip. But let’s say you see something online and don’t know where it’s from. Maybe someone on IG or Tiktok is wearing something cool and unique but they be gate keeping and won’t tell you the brand. You can take a screenshot or photo and plug it into the Google app under Google Lens (camera button on the right - it will let you search via taking a photo or importing one from your camera roll). It’ll find similar images on the internet and it’s how I’ve figured out where so many things were originally from!!

Yes!!! Meant to add that I work in an antiques store and I use it there too for jewellers’ marks etc so yes to this tip 💯

Poshmark has a newer feature now where you search by image too. I've found some great things similar to other things I found cute that way.

My tip for ThredUp is for returns. When you return items you don't want or don't fit, check the measurements yourself. Half the items I ordered were measured wrong. They waive the restocking fee if the measurements are wrong.

This is so helpful. As a disabled person who's very small, I can't go places without assistance, so I hate dragging someone with me just to shop for myself. This will help me out a lot because I want to be more ethical and sustainable.

First off, really well done video! Second, thank you for mentioning my video about ThredUp! Third, about Etsy, the fees are insane compared to everyone else.

Wow, this was a super comprehensive video and walk-through of all the different shops, especially without being scripted. Great job!

Thank you for this! This video was so descriptive and helpful. I love how you went through step-by-step the different places to look and did both points of view of buyer and seller. And also how you walked through how you look for very specific things to narrow down your search to find what you’re looking for. overall awesome video. greatly appreciated!

This was helpful because i need to sell some things from my closet and I've been wondering what platform to try! I'll give Mercari a shot. Anyone want a pair of brown American Duchess bicycle boots in 9.5 women's 😂

Don’t forget about WhatNot. I found it from one of your videos! I started selling there in October and have sold 1,500 vintage clothing pieces. ❤😊

I was going to include them in this video I just kinda haven’t used them in a while for buying. For selling either but that’s because my turnout for shows have been so low for the amount of prep and time I was putting in. They did reach out to do another collab but when I sent them my video list, this one included (which would have been PERFECT) they backed out 🤨 so who knows. Maybe I’ll give it a try again if enough people show interest.

SUPER useful video, thank you for putting this out! 80% of my thrifting has been online and eBay is also my favorite platform. Unfortunately, online has just been best because I live in an area that has a number of thrift stores to choose from, but it's the for-profits (i.e. Goodwill and Savers) or organizations that are religion-based (If you've heard of the Deseret Industries, that's an example of one that I don't want to support). Also, Google Lens has been such a help lately and a BIG game changer, so thank you also for the pinned comment as another great tip! ✨

I don't know if Poshmark US is different. but the Canada site also has housewares and decor and other small items. It's not just clothes. I've bought loads of vintage stuff on there. It's my preferred place for that sort of thing.

I'm honestly old fashioned when it comes to shopping, I don't like using apps to buy things because it scares me lol. However, since the only charity shop in my vicinity is VERY hit and miss and I can never find specific things there (lots of colours I don't like, polyester and ugly 2000s stuff), I recently ordered from an online thrift store and I am now addicted to browsing and adding things to my list. I am not in America though.

I ordered a purse from thredup once and when it arrived I found chewed gum in it :) So that kind of scared me away from buying from there again. I've also noticed the sizes are often off.

I used to scour Craigslist for craft tools when I lived in an urban area. It's not nearly as good in my current rural space.

Morning! I was wondering if you have a list of good thrift shops in your area. I live in Vallejo and was thinking of making a day trip thrifting up there. I'm mostly familiar with Old Town and the Courthouse areas. ❤❤❤ I'm also thinking of trying the shops around Danville. They used to be amazing pre-plague.

I actually have a video planned giving my list of best thrifting in Sac. My next haul video isn’t the list but it does mention 4 thrift stores in the Arden area (in Sacramento near Cal Expo) that I like.

I don't like buying clothes online because I'm a weird size and it never works out. Also, I got some trauma there. But it was nice hearing all these tips. I feel better knowing I'm not the only one who hates ThredUp.

the re-seller market is destroying thrifting.

    • @DressMeUpScotty
      @DressMeUpScotty  9 місяців тому +1

It’s not the individual resellers but corporate greed. Most of the people I know who re-sell are simply doing it to help support their families despite also working full time jobs. And even with everyone complaining about resellers the fact of the matter is there are plenty of clothes being donated to thrift stores (especially places like goodwill where people generally donate clothes since they are everywhere and convenient) 85% of clothes that are donated end up in landfills. Those of us who thrift at “the bins” aka the clearance centers see this first had because these places are the last stop before the items are discarded for good, and these places are overloaded. In fact, when their store warehouses are full, new donations automatically go to the “bins” aka clearance without ever seeing a sales floor. And you’d be surprised how many new with tags and nice items are in the piles because of this. I once fished out 3 identical Armani silk tops, top notch quality from the bins just before the worker came and took the bin away. So when people say “resellers take all the good stuff” they are clearly misinformed or perhaps it’s just their area that’s picked over (like small towns). Admittedly, corporate thrift stores like Goodwill and Savers might use resellers as justification for jacking up their prices but it’s not the people trying to build a side business to feed their family or pay their student loans that are accountable, the greedy CEO’s that are cosplaying as philanthropists while bringing home millions in bonuses a year are the ones to blame.
Sorry for the rant 😅 The reseller debate is a divisive subject and another way for people to pit the working class against one another. ❤️

I've only used Thredup for buying second-hand online. It was hilarious! I wanted a pair of jeans so I went to their sizing and they said that by my measurements I would wear a size 18--normally I wear a 14. I figured they knew what they were doing so I bought a pair of size 18 jeans. HUMONGOUS! I laughed and donated them to my local thrift store!

Ahhhhhh yeahhhhh “eBay” by Weird Al!! 😂 thank you for that moment!
Poshmark is my number one. They do have a counteroffer option! And bundling with sellers. Sometimes sellers spam the descriptions with a zillion tag words but I am pretty good at narrowing down specific keywords. Also, using the option to find similar items (like but in a different color) is super helpful.
eBay was my first love. 🥲
Etsy is crazy expensive! I only buy handmade stuff there, like from Lotus Traders Clothing small business or handmade clay jewelry or tribal cotton bellydance skirts.

I’m not living in the US so I don’t use the platforms you mentioned, but here the girlies are using instagram for the same purpose. Some are dedicated vintage, others can be closet sales but unfortunately there is also the shein resellers new with tags that one has to be aware of. I’ve gotten some gems and some stinky polyester armpits too 😅 but the search is quite addictive. I still have plenty items saved that I’m debating if to buy or not! 🥲 send help!
Btw your makeup in this vid is stunning!!💗
