- Takashima is a remote island in Nagasaki City, located in the sea about 14.5 km south-west of Nagasaki Port. The Takashima area consists of four islands, including Takashima and Hashima Island, also known as 'Gunkanjima'.
Takashima and Hashima were once the centre of Japan's coal industry, and at their peak, the two islands were home to a combined population of approximately 22,000 people, with high-rise apartment buildings clustered around the small islands.
Today, decades after the coal mines closed, Hashima is uninhabited and Takashima is a small island with a population of less than 300.
On this trip, the walk focuses on the area around Takashima Beach, where the clear, blue sea is beautiful, and on Gunkanjima ga Mieru Oka (Hill from which you can see Gunkanjima), where you can see Hashima Island = Gunkanjima at sunset. We also met some very friendly cats that live on the island.
We recommend a trip to Takashima, which retains faint traces of the coal-mining islands of bygone days, to immerse yourself in nostalgia.
