I was in the audience for this performance (and all of her competition performances). The story goes that she had to stop playing some years later due to hand or finger problems.
Her problem affected the index finger of her right hand, but she could still play fast and still perform at a high level. However, by that time she'd had enough of being a performer and changed her career. I had a few lessons with her in the 90s.
i also agree to the idea to play a simplified version, like she does. only then your're able to do it with passion; and more: it's just more guitaristical; the original piece has very violinistical manners and allures to give the maximum in variation. therefore you have to translate it into guitaristical manners, just like in the translation of languages. otherwise you'll miss the 'Geist' of the piece.
@@lucamassenziopalermo3140 This is a very rare achievenent in performance. It such a shame Nicola Hall retired from music due to an ailment in her hands. Ive read somewhere she went on to be an attorney. Good news it probably pays alot more than many masters of the guitar.
I met her when she was still giving concerts in her teens. I remember her playing the Aranjuez in Cambridge. She had flawless technique and showed promise as an artist. But then... she ditched art to become a lawyer! I guess we all have to make decisions based on where our heart really is. Now I read in her solicitor's page: "In her spare time, Nicola enjoys baking, running and travel." No room for the guitar... "... Theirs not to reason why..."
It appears she suffered a tendonitis-type injury affecting her right hand. It effectively ended her professional career as a classical guitarist, so she retrained as a lawyer. I've only seen videos of her as a young player, but the talent and potential were there for all to see.
@@MunchyToy Great pity. But, still there is hope. Others like Nicolas Petrou managed to overcome it. She could enjoy playing for herself at least. A very charming young lady she was when I met her.
@@MunchyToy She could. I had lessons with her and she explained was still able to use her thumb, middle and ring finger. I saw her give a concert and she could still play virtuoso pieces like the Caprice. But her heart was no longer in it. She told me she'd been playing the guitar since she was very young and never had much of a life.
Не часто можна почути таке бездоганне виконання, отримав глибоке задоволення, але мені соромно, що я не знав її раніше. Тепер буду постійно слухати. Дякую.
Sometimes a highly gifted person drops out of a field never to return, so keep in mind that the greatly gifted young guitarists that you listen to now, like Anton Boyer for example, may disappear as a guitarist forever. Enjoy and treasure them while you can. The competition and resulting burn out takes its toll and once they are gone they are usually gone for ever. Nicola Hall is an example of an expert who decided to chuck it it and do something more suitable to the long run. I understand that she gave up music to become a lawyer. That may have been a good decision for her but we suffered a great loss.
why so few videos of the most talented guitar player possibly of all time? there must be more! if a video of the Chaconne is found, I will feel like Brahms, 10 times more
Nicola Hall plays with total authority and conviction. Post more of her please.
At last, a totally original, personal, creative, risky, beautiful, and exciting rendition! Thank you, Ms. Hall!
Wow! Nicola Hall tears through the Paganini Caprice with flair and panache!
This video will live forever.... One of the greatest.
One of the best, greatest and most talented guitarist. A treat to watch & listen. Makes me feel jealous!

Fantastic performance. Her left hand seems to just glide over the strings, even during the pizzicato section in the middle! Incredible talent.

One of the greatest talents of the guitar....EVER.
It's a shame not many know of her as she retired due to a neurological illness..She is a total ORIGINAL❤️❤️❤️

Brilliance. So sad that she had to stop playing. I was lucky enough to see her play at Snape Maltings back in the late 80s.
I didn't hear that she had to stop playing, what happened?
@@gregbooker3535some form of nerve related condition affecting the hands, I believe. A real loss to the guitar world

Astonish!
Why didn't we know more of this superb guitarrist??
Well... Never mind, I know why.
Well if I remember right she had focal distonia in her hands and it sadly put an end to her career. I did get to see her play in concert, though
I almost fell off from my chair !!! Amazing!

Simplified? 🧐

Joe Satriani? you are right, she is a Master.
Jason Becker also performed this masterpiece on the album "boy meets guitar"
wished she never discovered paganini, iot distroyed her hands, imagine what beauty we could have enjoyed further.
Agreed, it appears the technical approach she adopted was unsustainable and it ultimately destroyed her physical ability to perform.
That left hand runs on the fingerboard as a spider on his web!

Merce todos los elogios .
