George was not under contract to Apple, he was contracted to EMI & Capitol, as were the other three former Beatles. They made an arrangement with EMI & Capitol to have their recordings on the Apple label from 1968 until their contract expired in 1975. Paul was the only one not to have an album released in 1975 on the Apple label, that was because he renegotiated and extended his contract with EMI and Capitol before it expired. The others didn't. Thus, Venus and Mars was released by Capitol/EMI in 1975. Extra Texture had a great album cover. However, except for the 2 singles, "You" & "This Guitar", I found the album depressing to listen to. "You" reached #20 on Billboard charts, while "This Guitar" did not chart at all.

I stck the Extra texture inner pic sleeve to my bedroom wall with glue and never got it off....but I did try when I was about 20. Amazing the dumb things we do. lol . I still have that original album with me here in Denmark....but no inner sleeve🙄

Cool stuff beatle brad! My mid 80s version was very vanilla. Mine has an untextured orange cover with blue print 'EXTRA TEXTURE' NO cut out cover and no printed inner sleeve, just plain white on the Apple label.

@@beatlebrad5339 I love your channel and have been subscribed for a long while. Interestingly you asked how it sounds. Well I always thought it sounded a bit strange actually with a muffled sound on one side and a more treble sound on the other. It's in stereo but sounds a bit like that processed stereo that they used to do with the mono tracks sometimes. Weird. Its a UK pressing . I bought it when i was 18 in '88. It was my favourite album for a long time by any artist.

It’s Beatle Brad! Hi, Beatle Brad! 🎸🎸🎸🎸 I’ve always been a fan of “Extra Texture”. It’s a smooth, cool and moody album which works very well at night. Especially after a long gig. It’s nice to have an album like that to kick back with before bed. It was recorded because Dark Horse Records artists, Splinter, couldn’t make it to the LA sessions which were to be held for their next album. Harrison took advantage of the situation and used it to record this LP. Also, he wanted to get out of his EMI contract as quickly as possible. The first single, “You” was recorded in February, 1971 and originally intended for Ronnie Spector’s aborted 1971-72 Apple album. In 1975, Harrison dusted off the abandoned recording, added more instruments (AAARP Odyssey, saxophone etc), muted RS’s vocals (yes, she did record one) and added his own. Just as they did with “Try Some, Buy Some”, the track was arranged in a key suitable for Ronnie Spector’s vocal range. Hence the reason Harrison sounds like his pants are too tight. One thing I discovered after listening really close is that Spector’s vocal pops up throughout the song. At times, GH is double tracked with her. RS's voice is most apparent on the fade as both singers “duet” until the songs ends. If I am hearing correctly, the first “You!” After the sax solo sounds more like RS than GH. Give it a listen! I don’t think “You” was inspired by Smokey Robinson, per say, but rather, Motown in general. The song which was dedicated to Smokey was “Ooh Baby (You Know That I Love You)”. He did the same thing in ’76 with “Pure Smokey”. “This Guitar (Can’t Keep From Crying)” is a great song and should’ve been, at least, a top 40 hit (“You” reached #20). The 45 holds the distinction of being the last Apple release until the label’s revival in the 1990’s. It also has the dubious honor of being the only solo Beatles Apple single to fail to chart in every market it was released. I own 16 copies of the single as I’m on a quest to find every pressing of the record from each of the countries it was released. I think I have 1 or 2 more to find. The songs “Can’t Stop Thinking About You” and "His Name Is Legs (Ladies And Gentlemen)” both hail from the sessions for 1974’s “Dark Horse” album. If you want to have a fun listen, knock “Legs” out of phase on your stereo and it transforms into a strange adventure starring Legs Larry Smith. He babbles nonsense throughout the song, double tracked, and- when it’s played in OOPS mode- his voices come to the front. Some of the goofy things he says are “It's been a real pleasure with Willie Weeks on bass! Too bad he plays bum notes every now and again and hides his face….but, it doesn’t matter….but, if he’s was gonna play a bum note, I wish he’d play a Legs note because that’s what the damn song is all about, me, yours truly, Legs Larry Smith! Drrrr! Drrrr! Hang on a second….” “Well, I guess we’ve all gotta go and pay the rent…..some time…..know what I mean? There’s only the Sergeant’s daughter but she knew what reggie-meant…..Anyway, it’s been a real thrill working with you all in Friar Park….I only came here for the central heating…..” “Good evening, sir! Good evening, madame! Step right this way! Your table has been reserved! But please! As soon as you see the ladies on stage? No screaming, ok? Sir? I said, no screaming! I’m sorry I have the table on your foot! I’m sorry!” On the fade, he says “Pattie’s teaching me how to knit”. This was obviously recorded while GH and PB were still together. By the way, George Harrison didn’t have laryngitis here. That was “Dark Horse” a year earlier.

Wow, Brad, that's quite a collection for an album I don't even have anymore! I'm in the process of weeding my LP collection and this album is one that went. Never one of my favorites and I really hardly played it. My first concert was seeing George in Seattle in 74. It was the second show of the tour so his voice wasn't quite so bad and the audience was pretty excited overall.

This Guitar Can't Keep From Crying was a second single in the U.K but did not chart. Love the apple core on the label of the album and singles to depict the financial state of Apple. Not an easy album to get into. I think George was much more successful with the soul music homages on his next album 33 1/3. However George is no cowboy and the album has been made with his usual care. I like you, love the single You which achieved a modest no 38 in the British chart.

Great idea to laminate the ads. I saw him in '74 at the Long Beach Arena and was very disappointed. I heard he was also putting too much stuff up his nose!!!

Great video Brad. We never had the cut out sleeve in the Uk so my copy from the 70s is textured sleeve but no cut out. I have the original CD and the remastered CD but haven't got round to getting 180g vinyl yet but its on my list. No long boxes here in the Uk either . really liked the copy from Uruguay - very unusual and well done on the coordinated orange shirt. I have to say this is an album that Ive never found a way to love. A couple of really good tracks on it like This Guitar and Tired of Midnight Blue but other wise I find it quite dull and probably my least favourite George album. great collection, great video, thank you for showing your stuff. Nice Extra Texture collection! I've always enjoyed this album... it's underplayed and unique. I remember when I first found a copy being fascinated with the orange cover and the title. "World Of Stone" is a particularly beautiful song. George never made a bad solo album!

Hey Brad, I have the CD actually. Instead of ordering George's box sets which I can't afford I've been ordering the CD's separately from eBay just over the last couple weeks. I was at the Los Angeles concert in 74 and all I can say is 'Ouch' haha. It was pretty rough but I'm sure glad I went anyway. The roughest part was the first hour was Ravi Shankar lol. Yeah I would agree with you this album is not great but it's not his worst. Enjoyed the video Brad.

George recorded this album just to fulfill he recording contract with EMI. Much like he did with Gone Troppo in 1982. As "You" starts to fade out you can hear Ronnie Spector's guide vocal. On the UK pressing which I have, in the run out groove the a message eched that says "Ooh George you're such a dark horse luv George" which is not on the US copy. That song "This Guitar (Can't Keep From Crying)" was his feelings from the harsh reviews of his Dark Horse tour. Rolling Stone magazine was not kind at all. "Learn to get up when I fall Can even climb Rolling Stone Walls But this guitar can't keep from crying"

I stck the Extra texture inner pic sleeve to my bedroom wall with glue and never got it off....but I did try when I was about 20. Amazing the dumb things we do. lol . I still have that original album with me here in Denmark....but no inner sleeve🙄

Cool stuff beatle brad! My mid 80s version was very vanilla. Mine has an untextured orange cover with blue print 'EXTRA TEXTURE' NO cut out cover and no printed inner sleeve, just plain white on the Apple label.

@@beatlebrad5339 I love your channel and have been subscribed for a long while. Interestingly you asked how it sounds. Well I always thought it sounded a bit strange actually with a muffled sound on one side and a more treble sound on the other. It's in stereo but sounds a bit like that processed stereo that they used to do with the mono tracks sometimes. Weird. Its a UK pressing . I bought it when i was 18 in '88. It was my favourite album for a long time by any artist.

I’ve always been a fan of “Extra Texture”. It’s a smooth, cool and moody album which works very well at night. Especially after a long gig. It’s nice to have an album like that to kick back with before bed. It was recorded because Dark Horse Records artists, Splinter, couldn’t make it to the LA sessions which were to be held for their next album. Harrison took advantage of the situation and used it to record this LP. Also, he wanted to get out of his EMI contract as quickly as possible.
The first single, “You” was recorded in February, 1971 and originally intended for Ronnie Spector’s aborted 1971-72 Apple album. In 1975, Harrison dusted off the abandoned recording, added more instruments (AAARP Odyssey, saxophone etc), muted RS’s vocals (yes, she did record one) and added his own. Just as they did with “Try Some, Buy Some”, the track was arranged in a key suitable for Ronnie Spector’s vocal range. Hence the reason Harrison sounds like his pants are too tight. One thing I discovered after listening really close is that Spector’s vocal pops up throughout the song. At times, GH is double tracked with her. RS's voice is most apparent on the fade as both singers “duet” until the songs ends. If I am hearing correctly, the first “You!” After the sax solo sounds more like RS than GH. Give it a listen!
I don’t think “You” was inspired by Smokey Robinson, per say, but rather, Motown in general. The song which was dedicated to Smokey was “Ooh Baby (You Know That I Love You)”. He did the same thing in ’76 with “Pure Smokey”.
“This Guitar (Can’t Keep From Crying)” is a great song and should’ve been, at least, a top 40 hit (“You” reached #20). The 45 holds the distinction of being the last Apple release until the label’s revival in the 1990’s. It also has the dubious honor of being the only solo Beatles Apple single to fail to chart in every market it was released. I own 16 copies of the single as I’m on a quest to find every pressing of the record from each of the countries it was released. I think I have 1 or 2 more to find.
The songs “Can’t Stop Thinking About You” and "His Name Is Legs (Ladies And Gentlemen)” both hail from the sessions for 1974’s “Dark Horse” album.
If you want to have a fun listen, knock “Legs” out of phase on your stereo and it transforms into a strange adventure starring Legs Larry Smith. He babbles nonsense throughout the song, double tracked, and- when it’s played in OOPS mode- his voices come to the front.
Some of the goofy things he says are
“It's been a real pleasure with Willie Weeks on bass! Too bad he plays bum notes every now and again and hides his face….but, it doesn’t matter….but, if he’s was gonna play a bum note,
I wish he’d play a Legs note because that’s what the damn song is all about, me, yours truly, Legs Larry Smith! Drrrr! Drrrr! Hang on a second….”
“Well, I guess we’ve all gotta go and pay the rent…..some time…..know what I mean? There’s only the Sergeant’s daughter but she knew what reggie-meant…..Anyway, it’s been a real thrill working with you all in Friar Park….I only came here for the central heating…..”
“Good evening, sir! Good evening, madame! Step right this way! Your table has been reserved! But please! As soon as you see the ladies on stage? No screaming, ok? Sir? I said, no screaming! I’m sorry I have the table on your foot! I’m sorry!”
On the fade, he says “Pattie’s teaching me how to knit”. This was obviously recorded while GH and PB were still together.
By the way, George Harrison didn’t have laryngitis here. That was “Dark Horse” a year earlier.

Wow, Brad, that's quite a collection for an album I don't even have anymore! I'm in the process of weeding my LP collection and this album is one that went. Never one of my favorites and I really hardly played it. My first concert was seeing George in Seattle in 74. It was the second show of the tour so his voice wasn't quite so bad and the audience was pretty excited overall.

This Guitar Can't Keep From Crying was a second single in the U.K but did not chart. Love the apple core on the label of the album and singles to depict the financial state of Apple. Not an easy album to get into. I think George was much more successful with the soul music homages on his next album 33 1/3. However George is no cowboy and the album has been made with his usual care. I like you, love the single You which achieved a modest no 38 in the British chart.

Great idea to laminate the ads. I saw him in '74 at the Long Beach Arena and was very disappointed. I heard he was also putting too much stuff up his nose!!!

Great video Brad. We never had the cut out sleeve in the Uk so my copy from the 70s is textured sleeve but no cut out. I have the original CD and the remastered CD but haven't got round to getting 180g vinyl yet but its on my list. No long boxes here in the Uk either . really liked the copy from Uruguay - very unusual and well done on the coordinated orange shirt. I have to say this is an album that Ive never found a way to love. A couple of really good tracks on it like This Guitar and Tired of Midnight Blue but other wise I find it quite dull and probably my least favourite George album. great collection, great video, thank you for showing your stuff. Nice Extra Texture collection! I've always enjoyed this album... it's underplayed and unique. I remember when I first found a copy being fascinated with the orange cover and the title. "World Of Stone" is a particularly beautiful song. George never made a bad solo album!

Hey Brad, I have the CD actually. Instead of ordering George's box sets which I can't afford I've been ordering the CD's separately from eBay just over the last couple weeks. I was at the Los Angeles concert in 74 and all I can say is 'Ouch' haha. It was pretty rough but I'm sure glad I went anyway. The roughest part was the first hour was Ravi Shankar lol. Yeah I would agree with you this album is not great but it's not his worst. Enjoyed the video Brad.

George recorded this album just to fulfill he recording contract with EMI. Much like he did with Gone Troppo in 1982. As "You" starts to fade out you can hear Ronnie Spector's guide vocal. On the UK pressing which I have, in the run out groove the a message eched that says "Ooh George you're such a dark horse luv George" which is not on the US copy. That song "This Guitar (Can't Keep From Crying)" was his feelings from the harsh reviews of his Dark Horse tour. Rolling Stone magazine was not kind at all. "Learn to get up when I fall
