CSIRO... Good on you guys... Thank you for providing this v-tour, I found it very interesting, and now with the destruction of the antenna is a permanent reminder of the wonderful things that people can achieve, as well as the discoveries that were achieved.
I live in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. We are devastated. It was amazing in person. Thank God for the videos and memories 😢😭💔 Hopefully it will come back even better.
@InstantMix One of my research interests is the Moon Illusion, where the moon looks bigger on the horizon than when it's high in the sky. If you stand on your head, the illusion disappears! In the dome, you get a sense of vertigo similar to the near-far feeling you get when you look at the moon on the horizon. I wondered what it would look like standing on my head. And indeed, the egg-shaped secondary reflector in the dome looks circular when you do that!
Thanks for this tour of the Arecibo Observatory platform. We had to omit that on the day we filmed our tour because the 430 MHz transmitter was operating.
This thing is amazing. I was driving south on WV 28 and saw it approaching in the distance, and as you get closer you simply can't believe that so big, especially as it's out in the middle of nowhere
900 tons, suspended 500 feet in the air. Maybe the next one could be a little lighter? Maybe aluminum? I think when it was built, no one thought it would still be in use 50 years later. Back then we invested in science instead of just weapons.
So very sad that all this wonderful technology is gone. At least no one was injured/killed when the cables let go! Tech can be replaced.... life cannot.
2:40 Just looking at the view reminds me of the good 'ol days of Goldeneye N64 when you're running around the triangle scared shooting baddies knowing that the game is set to the point that they will kill you with one shot. XD Can you actually take tours as a civillian? Or is this just to see how it feels like? I want to take a friend or something and shoot each other with long range NERF guns or something random. :)
pssst... pulsars are where the supposedly complicated ET messages are hidden in the pulse drifting/quantization/phase memory, pulse nulling, mode switching/memory observed in their broadband synchrotron beams... Jump in now or watch from the sidelines... fallenalien(dot)com
After the collapse I'm so grateful that this video is on UA-cam. At least I can experience it from home
This is sad
Thank you for (unintentionally) preserving this engineering masterpiece so future generations can enjoy it.
its such a shame that it collapsed. this is now historical footage

Goodbye Arecibo, thanks for all the science you guys did over the years.
Oh well. It's gone now. :(.
It’s hard to appreciate the true scale until you get up close. Sad to see the telescope come to an end...

Hmm, can't imagine why this is being recommended to me right now
Oh my god, the guide wore a SETI@home shirt 🤩
Fun fact, if you don’t yet know, this thing collapsed a few hours ago
@@misahohimeima1981 Very fun fact 🙄
Yes I do know, that's why I'm here :/
goldeneye it is
For England James? I want to go there
Did you? Too late
@@lukmly013 unfortunatley not😅
Very interesting. Thank you for posting
i can't imagine not seeing russian soldiers with their short submachine guns and alec trevelyan running on these platforms
Lol I agree, seeing this make me want to pull my Magnum and start shooting Alec's bodyguards with mini uzis Lol
lol.. *Cradle theme plays*
You would not get me up there for all the tea in China
*down there
This is one of those videos that UA-cam was meant for
R.I.P. Arecibo :-(
RIP Dec 01, 2020... more to add to the worst year ever.
this needs to be etched in stone so it can be a reminder for hundreds of thousands of years,
What I would do to take this tour. :D
Anybody else here after the collapse?
Just you, ginja bread man.
I would love to ride up to Arecibo..been there but the view wasn't so good for us.
besides in "goldeneye" the radio telescope is also featured in the movie "contact"

It is insane that you could keep that monster up in the air with couple of cables in the first place...
Whoever he is following has the strangest gait as he walks.
Its gone now : (
Yay CSIRO. Australia's forgotten gem
I'm back. I have a 2 year old comment on this. Gonna make this a bi-annual thing.
You never came back. :(
same, I'd go to the top and yell "THATS WHERE TREVELYAN FELL! *points to ground*"
Sadly, all you can do now is stand at the side and go "That's where the whole thing fell"
I heard that this humungus-sized parabolic dish did send a signal in 1976 , am I right ? Till now have yet to receive any signal
Its such a shame it collapsed. For all the gamers once in battlefield always in battlefield! At least i can experience this at home this is amazing
For England James?
The scenes look like from a video game, like half life 2 or something similar, cool :D
@JerrysTube ; my pc still runs Seti@Home with BOINC 6-something... really cool, and indeed, you can learn a lot from it :)
been there - done that - was very cool - got to listen to some weirdo transmissions etc
So very sad that all this wonderful technology is gone.
At least no one was injured/killed when the cables let go!
Tech can be replaced.... life cannot.
wow GoldenEye: Source really recreated it perfectly
goldeneye Cradle
Imagine the elevator stopping half way up?? Scary
Now needs to be re-dubbed with the past tense.
The pants have been soiled!
Eh, they're version is a bit scrunched. The antenna is rather short and the arm doesn't extend out as much as it should.
Still, very nice. =)

imagine having to film the goldeneye scene there *whistles*
thanks for the video
open to the public? it looks the same goldeneye was filmed 20 years ago
If it was open to the public it certainly isn’t now, it collapsed last night.
What's "their" reply ?
a person wonders how many other structures held up by cables are getting tested
Now this Observatory are part of a Map in Battlefield 4!
You've obviously never played Goldeneye 007 on the N64...
my dream is to walk on there......
Did you ever do it?
Rip
sadly its all history now :/.
very cool
Why does he ask if you have stood on your head?
Forgot to pick up the body amour

Hello youtube algorithm.
Aaaand, its ´s gone... may it be rebuilt, harder better faster, stronger
Of coarse, Sean Bean ride the Cable Car to attack Peirce Brosnan who was running up the Catwalk during the 1995 James Bond Film, GoldenEye film clip.
Looks like the old apature science
RIP Arecibo.

SAVE ARECIBO!!!
These comments kill me.
Travelyan fell to his death from the very bottom of this Radio Telescope Platform.

Moment of silence anyone?
Why? Your comment is 7 years old. Without edit. What was the reason?
I could skate in that.
