The indigenous instrument "Pena" is a prestigious and royal musical instrument. It signifies a lot more than just a recreational instrument. We the "Meitei" play it on almost every occasion for a good omen.
We pay utmost respect to PENA, we bow down and touch it with our forehead even before touching it.
PENA consists of two parts, a string and a body. The string part is considered as "Father" and the body part is considered as "mother".
The song "NANG GI WARI LIYU" was written out of disparity of the lyricist when he saw a rusted PENA lying on the river bed of the IMPHAL river. The scene was one of the most unexpected scenes of his life and wanted to "save" the PENA, which was lying "lifeless", broken and rusted.
The song raised the concern that such a beautiful and royal instrument which was once treated with utmost importance is being undervalued in today's generation. The value of the instrument is declining, the instrument that was once prestigious is now lying rusted and unmarked.

The band
SAM PAA is an experimental folk music band based in Imphal, Manipur. Originally, the band sprouted from folk and traditional music of Kangleipak (now Manipur) to promote indigenous folk tunes and music in the world. The band was formed in the year 2014. One unique feature of the band is the own created and local made instruments. “Mitsna Leikai Koiganba” & “Engellei” are the debut live music videos produced in the year 2017. The band has performed in distinguish musical events, festivals and live shows in and across the country. In the year 2018, the band worked with British Council in the project “MIX THE CITY”.
