The reason for his great throw was because he's Seppo Räty. That's why.

To be clear for everyone. The javelin used here by Raty is indeed the Nordic (Sandvik) Champion made of steel. The javelin is still for sale nowaydays only had another design back then which was banned due changes in the IAAF rules. The javelin zelezny used in 1992 for his banned WR was a Nemeth classic 90 (green tail) which got banned also. This javelin is also still for sale (only, fcourse another design)

to sum up. there were 3 types of javelins... the old one (hohn) the one with rough surface ( raty) and the new one ( zelezny) Zelezny threw this javelin as seppo over 90 meters aswell as seppo raty threw the javelin we are using today 90.60 and it is his PB as far as i remember from the documentary about him :D sorry for bad english

By the way, I have to comment this video once again. It makes me wonder how on earth Raty got his javelin that far in those conditions. That day was not supposed to be day when someone throws 97m. It was rainy and wind blew from side, a typical Finnish summer day in june. Somehow he just did it and that's why he is the most respected javelin thrower in Finland. He didn't mind if he was physically injured (like he was a lot), least what wheater it would be. Only what mattered was the result.

Seppo got three Olympic medals: bronze in 1988, silver in 1992, and bronze in 1996. (A belated answer to Mr. Juha / myöhästynyt vastaus Mr. Juhalle.)

@rocketjav11 You're right. Zelezny did throw same javelin 94,74m a year after (1992) - and it was WR at the time. It's little bit strange because Raty's result 96,96m was cleared in autumn 1991. Why did they keep throwing that banned javelin in 1992 and still think they could have the record... Raty's coach Eino Maksimainen said that Raty had one perfect throw in his career. And that was the trow above.

@rocketjav11 It's the same javelin as today. Made of iron and had a rough surface (velcro tape) on back wich gave it better flight capability. Seppo owned this world record for a while back then. The Javelin wich Seppo threw was modified javelin by Nemeth which was banned by the IAAF later that year. If I remember correctly, Zelezny threw the same jav' 'only' 88m and Steve Backley got it over 90m. Those results were deleted also. Seppo threw it also 91,80m earlier that year in Japan.

@rocketjav11 Well I did some investigations and find that although some articles are telling that Seppo threw Nemeths javelin, he was surprisingly using javelin named Champion by Sandviken. That's the stick which had a rough sticker on its end. Nonetheless it doesn't explain why Zelezny used that kind on javelin a year after... Maybe he believed that it would not be ejected because it was designed by Nemeth or something like that.

Seppo made it to 98.98. Old model. Modern style 96.00 is the maximum.

What exactly was the problem with his javelin? Was it so much different from the one they use today?

No, he hasn't got, sorry. Maybe after this weekend he might be the double master in World League and will still stay behind Seppo. Tero needs a few Olympic and WL medals more and then you can rank him higher than Seppo without sounding surrealistic.
