    The most lucid, honest, best-intentioned, vital forum I've ever come across for the discussion of our collective predicament. I am more grateful than I can express that I discovered The Great Simplification this year. It has informed me, focused my thinking, and made me feel much less alone. Thank you Nate and team for doing this important work. May your influence continue to extend in 2024.

      @@philawsonfur Within the body of information found with permaculture there is an idea to think for a hundred hours about and before doing an hour of work. Kind of a ridiculous this 100:1 ratio but it makes a point. Maybe with the most difficult of work its true but I haven't taken on anything of the sort, just want to take care of my self basically and show the few interested how I am doing this. It is nice to sip on coffee for a few hours in the early morning looking about and dream towards expanding the growing system I am building up. Though. You might like it.

    • @koltoncrane3099
      @koltoncrane3099 10 місяців тому +1

      Blaming and shaming isn’t constructive that’s true. But I do think being critical or pointing out conflict of interest is super important. Bill gates and Jeremy stands to make billions as society goes more green. It doesn’t reduce inequality but rather widens it making them ever richer. It’s like bill gates bought stock in 2019 for $18 and sold in 2021 at $300 and then said a certain shottt wasn’t affective. Like facts like these showing conflict of interest and perfectly mimicking insider trading should give people cause to pause and ponder. Bill gates says beef is horrible, and he also owns beyond meat selling fake burgers. Warren buffet buying up the rest of Pilot and oil producers also makes me wonder. It’s like why is this guy promoting fossil fuels when he’s pro earth?
      I totally understand why younger people are Democrat. I’m becoming more likely to go that way. I don’t think a wealth tax would pass cause it sounds bad. They need to call it a property tax on equities of the top 1% of 5% a year or something. If the rich are taxed as they benefit from the green movement and massive government spending and then that money goes to help actual poor people buy EVs it’s like okay then maybe I’ll believe Jeremy cares about the earth and not just pushing his own book. I think of other “experts” Kevin o Leary said Sam bankmen fried was clearly trustworthy cause both of his
      Parents were lawyers at Stanford. We gotta listen to the experts haha

      Thanks for your reply. The challenge is that one person can cover only so much ground. I appreciate that Nate is focusing on the facts on the ground, not the people walking on the ground. It's human nature to rush to the personal and the political. Everything you mentioned needs to be covered, and many UA-cam channels do cover these topics. What I like here is the search for scientific and universal truths. I appreciate your thoughtful comment.@@koltoncrane3099

    Thank you, Nate. Exactly what I would have wanted as a New Year's gift to share with others in the social circles with which I am acquainted. Wonderfully affirming for me, as the points you brought forward all pretty much align with the conclusions I have come to in my 70 years on the planet. I had to back up the video several times because many of the speakers inspired a mini-storm of ideas I've been wanting to write about, but hadn't yet fully framed. Every person I admire with whom I've shared your channel who have taken up the offer have come back to me with enthusiastic thanks. Let's strive to keep getting the conversation out there to more and more people. Elevating human beings' inquisitive awareness and the ability to perceive both our current breakdowns and potentials as a species participating in Life on Earth as a whole, from a clear-eyed and constructive perspective, is essential if we are to pass this most critical of our species' tests to date. This will be a different world, a peaceful world where all living things thrive, when (and if) we succeed. It may be a long journey, but it is the only one worth taking from my perspective.

    There was a professor from Utah I saw on UA-cam talking about how complex systems may fail. It’s like if people actually believed in complex systems more likely to fail for society it’s like you’d think nuclear reactors or coal power plants would be promoted rather than wind and solar that literally depends on a global supply chain especially if society collapses and you have to focus on local economies if transportation etc is devastated.

    We have been part of this movement, this alarm system since the early 1970's, over 50 years..People didn't have all the data back then, that we do today, but we did know that we would be in big trouble if things remained the same..We are destroying the base of the food chain in the oceans which is phytoplankton, which also produces our oxygen.. And insects, the base of the food chain on land which also conditions the soil for things to grow like our food and the burning forests which produces the rest of our oxygen..Forests can disappear and be destroyed so quickly..We are in crazy trouble from so many angles, it's a perfect storm..The growth market system is certainly a religion, and so is our technology, which has us in this situation..The faith in market systems is disappearing, but the faith in technology has never been stronger..And like it or not, we are not a mature enough species to wield any mass produced technology, hence the tens of thousands of nuclear weapons pointed at you and me, and every civilization to ever exist, either being conquered by superior technology, destroy their own environment, or fail to adapt to a quickly changing environment because of wasting their resources..Our situation is nothing new, it's par for the course, and the pinnacle of the cycle of civilizational collapse, because we are a species that refuses to mature and continues to celebrate and reward greed, ego and violence..And the planet couldn't possibly facilitate, accommodate or tolerate another civilization like ours, once we collapse in the near future..It's who we are and what we do..

    I'm glad most of these people and many others are contributing in positive ways to our future, but unless the wealthy and powerful who's objectives, for the most part, are at odds with a stable and sane world are reigned in there is no hope. Maybe it is just part of human nature, but seems that a disproportionate number of people at the top (economically and in positions of power) are either born sociopaths or evolve to become that way. In the US, it has become starkly apparent that the people in government and those scrambling for power are of low quality (dishonest, ignorant, greedy, and philosophically medieval) and getting worse.

    Nate, as usual, thank you for your good work. Point I wanted to add to the discussion based on comments within this wonderful compilation. I don’t believe that our civilization has evolved such that dominant strong men have evolved into psychopaths. Our ability to communicate has actually created a D evolutionary situation, within which our cooperative nature has allowed very weak men to communicate and coordinate, such that rather than strong men, rising to the top, weak men, who are motivated from a place of self interest, and sociopathy, and psychopathy, are able to coordinate other weak men in a mutual effort for power. Our genetic evolution would lead us to the point where strong men would need to buy for control of breeding rights Ultimately weeding out the most aggressive men who would have to fight multiple battles to maintain dominance, leading to strong men with more cooperative natures, ultimately passing along their genetic material. However, weak men coordinating through and ever increasing complexity of civilization structures as lettuce to this point that psychopaths now dominate the world.referring to the Iroquois confederacy we need to consciously invite a narrative of elder women to take charge of our society to dig our way out of this hole.

    • @equinnox70
      @equinnox70 11 місяців тому

      Many wise elder women I know are taking action behind the scenes and coming together in their spiritual wisdom traditions as powerful and active beacons of steadfast Love. It may sound a bit woo, but I belong to a large meditation group in the PNW dedicated to creating a “Net of Light” with our hearts in order to hold the world during these times of transition. This is a non-denominational movement, and there are groups all over the world. Many indigenous lineages are working together in this. We seek to bring more balance into a world that has swung very far into the extreme masculine principle, the “yang” if you will. I feel a bit shy sharing this in such a scientific forum, but your comment spurred me on. Thank you for reading.

Sold, donated, enslaved, cycled or looped into the system of anyone or anything.. not for a " good cause", not a kidney cell, not a distant relative of a brain eating amoeba weird cousin, i felt what my ancestors endured, and the truth is that not a speck of consideration, truth, best interest, compassion love, empathy has been present in trying to silence me and take what they feel they are entitled to, and that's because I was ritualistic linked to a well for narcissists to just feed upon and torture and harvest after they can't find anymore ways to inflict damage and trauma. Seasons greetings. It won’t matter in another 15 or so years, X-class solar flares will ensure the lights go out, for years. Whilst we are struggling with the first, more will come, as the end of Gleissburg cycle no 316 brings the cataclysm and ensuing ice age. Paradoxically, they’ll need drilling engineers in the post next ice-age era, some 150 years plus from 2046, as without them, they’ll not be able to redevelop beyond (again, paradoxically) hydrocarbons. Diesel will still be needed to run the machines that will help drive the new humans’ somewhat cooler future. RIP Doug Vogt, Diehold Foundation, Series 4: watch all of them. 🖐🏻

      That is the real Elephant in the room that is ignored and needs to be discussed in thorough. If they researched that aspect they would also find the weakening magnetic field it would address the carbon issues, rise in cancer and even the insect problem. Hopefully 2024 will see this addressed and stop with all these other distractions.

      @@briansprung Amen. The weakening magnetic field and the implications of the Gleissburg cycle is the portent that dare not be recognised, by those blind to reality. People making plans for their children and grandchildren, all the while dutifully playing by the rules, being screwed and poisoned by their betters and all the while paying for the privilege. “Après nous, la déluge”, as we say in Scotland!

    I wish climate alarmists would stop using gasoline, grocery stores, electricity from the grid, airplanes, and walk the walk. Easy to be an alarmist. Difficult to walk the walk. Machines make the wealth now. Machines need coal, oil, natural gas, electricity. Humans are just cows on a farm being farmed with IOUs worth nothing. Never been a better time to be alive for all eight billion people. I am very optimistic. If we don't manage the problem we will be culled from the herd and die. Not a big deal really. Thanks Nate.

      I am uncertain if I understand the question or its meaning, but regarding avoiding eating meat, it solves nothing. The problem isn't _what_ we eat. The problem is that there are _ten billion people_ that need to be fed. No matter what kind of food you choose to produce, producing enough to feed _this many people_ will be catastrophic.

    2:08 "and it's accelerating at 2% per year" do they mean "increasing" ? I hope they mean inreasing. Anyway... 2% per year means it will double every 35 years. 1 in 7 today, 2 in 7 in 2060, 4 in 7 near the end of the century. Fuuuun tiiiiimes

    I don't believe in god, neither do I believe all the bull shit he claims I do.
    What's worse, People who believe in god go down the same path of lust for riches.
    Take God out of the picture and we need to take responsibility for our own actions. We go by the laws of nature instead of the laws of some self proclaimed "mouth piece of God"!

    Dear Luke Gromen, I don't think that you understand Arab culture. In 5 years that contract with Qatar may not be honored. And how are you going to make them honor it? How will you make Qatar deliver the gas or oil to your ship? If the international price increases a lot over your contract price Qatar can sell it to someone else for a lot more.
