The amount of inventiveness in their songs is astonishing. They always managed to write somewhat catchy songs always retaining an experimental attitude that can have any deep music aficionado drooling in pleasure
I remember taping this video off of MTV in '89. For about a month afterward, whenever my band got together to practice, we'd watch this video first, then we'd spend about an hour or so just making glorious noise.
Every song of theirs sounds like the best of whatever genre pops up to emulate them. So massively influential to so many other important influential bands. Finest dirty american art rock ever.
[Verse 1] Snake in it, jack into the wall TV amp on fire blowing in the hall Gun your sled, close your peeping toms Turbo organizer cranking on the knob [Chorus] You got it Yeah, ride your silver rocket Can't stop it Burnin' hole in your pocket [Verse 2] Hit the power, psycho helmets on You got to splice your halo, take it to a moon Nymphoid clamor fueling up the hammer You got to fake out the robot and pulse up the zoom [Chorus] You got it Yeah, ride your silver rocket Can't stop it Burnin' hole in your pocket [Verse 3] Can't forget the flashing Can't forget the smashing The sending and the bending The atmosphere re-entry You gotta have the time Got another in your mind Got your heart injected And you got your soul aligned [Chorus] You got it Yeah, ride your silver rocket Can't stop it Burnin' hole in your pocket
I remember the moment I realized this was being played live, after that nothing was ever the same again. When the guitar comes back in at 2:22 I always lose it
Lucky I saw SY a few times .. still remember my first listen to this Album .. quite simply a MASTERPIECE . Like the candle on the cover they burnt oh so brightly .
Love Sonic Youth but wish they had more songs like this where they let Steve Shelley play more all out and ballsout hardcore style (like his previous band the Crucifucks)

Underrated as in not recognized by the mainstream? Yes, but they're legendary among the indie and punk crowd so I wouldn't consider them underrated in that sense.

god i love the sound that lee's guitar makes when he slaps it at the beginning
I remember when this was rightfully called "noise-rock".
I remember when this was rightfully called "Rock bruitiste" in France ;)
@@hellkammer Here in Italy you could translate it in "rock rumoroso" 😃
as if its not still called noise-rock?
Before or after it was called New York art noise?
What's it called now?
Every song of theirs sounds like the best of whatever genre pops up to emulate them. So massively influential to so many other important influential bands.

[Verse 1]
Snake in it, jack into the wall
TV amp on fire blowing in the hall
Gun your sled, close your peeping toms
Turbo organizer cranking on the knob
[Chorus]
You got it
Yeah, ride your silver rocket
Can't stop it

The sending and the bending
The atmosphere re-entry
You gotta have the time
Got another in your mind
Got your heart injected
And you got your soul aligned
[Chorus]
You got it
Yeah, ride your silver rocket
Can't stop it
Burnin' hole in your pocket

Daydream Nation is a masterpiece . I was lucky to see SAY many times. I don't think they ever scaled the same lofty heights as they did on that album.

Love Sonic Youth but wish they had more songs like this where they let Steve Shelley play more all out and ballsout hardcore style (like his previous band the Crucifucks)
You will have to Cross The Breeze
their song Mary-Christ, especially live performances of it, have a very hardcore punk drumming influence in it
Look up their track Titanium Expose. That one goes hard

JK Rowling created the Harry Potter character because she was inspired by this insane drummer.
Steve Shelley and the chamber of Secrets?
Ron is based on Thurston Moore
If only she was that coo'. Shes somewhat of a twAt
Steve also was the drummer behind the most subversive punk band Crucifucks. What a legend !
Jk rowling blasting crucifucks is such a weird but entertaining thought
Their best song
Steve looks like Jeffrey Dahmer here
lol @ Steve at the start of the noise freakout 1:41
Lol I know! That part still makes me laugh and I used to watch this when it was cut off toward the end. This is the best version in my opinion
Love this version! Also, this isn't loud enough - should I curse UA-cam, or curse at myself for blasting loud music into my ears for so many years?

Sonic Youth is underrated!
Underrated as in not recognized by the mainstream? Yes, but they're legendary among the indie and punk crowd so I wouldn't consider them underrated in that sense.
