  • Enjoy a detailed behind the scenes of how we built the World Record Kapla Tower, including how it was designed, how it was supposed to fall, and what really happened during the collapse.
    18 builders spent 4 days attempting to break the World Record for the tallest tower made of wooden toy blocks! This 25m-tall (82ft) tower contains 100,000 Kapla planks and was designed by ‪@KaplaBen‬, who organized this world record project!
    Watch the official falldown edit on ‪@KaplaBen‬'s channel: • The World Tallest Kapl...
    Special thanks to Kapla and Olympia London for supporting this World Record attempt, Anna and Richard for the event organization/logistics, and the film crew (Robert, David and Tristan) for capturing incredible shots of this project.

    I’m still confused by the second tower.. like HOW did it just all explode like that??🤔

      perhaps there was just enough shift sideways to lose stability because the main thing holding the tower together is the weight from the planks above?
      there is a lot of vertical stability from the weight above, but once enough planks move sideways (even a small amount), you don't have as much weight on planks in the downward direction, and the reduced friction allows the planks to continue to slide out/move sideways, accelerating the process. you can see that the sections of the tower all expand out as they fall, further reducing the stability. it could probably be simulated in a computer model, but that model would likely take a lot longer to build than your real towers.

      I think that is was more luck when it not occured. Cus there are sooo many parts that can shift or slightly wrong placed, normally they don't, but with a chance of 1:100 000 they do. So it was just a matter of probability, once it fell, once not.

    YOU GUYS DID IT TWICE?!!!!???!!?! THAT'S INCREDIBLE!!!! I've been gushing over this structure since it came out, and I'm so happy I was able to get to see some behind the scenes work for this structure! It's awesome that there was some changes both times, and it was nice to see them! This was an awesome video :D

    The second topple is really interesting because Yeah it's definitely odd how those planks just shoot out like that. My guess is that because of the huge amount of weight above those supports, the vibrations from the tower starting to topple gave it enough movement to cripple under the weight and then shoot out in the easiest direction those planks could go.
    And this was also more possible in the second tower because of the taller structure overall
    Either way, both topples were super supet impressive and inspiring, especially as a fan of Ben's and your work Lily for such a long time. Massive props to the entire team that worked on this project. keep up the amazing stuff :)

    • @KaplaBen
      @KaplaBen 11 місяців тому +4

      I agree with this analysis, but i'm still shocked how the first plank goes. Actually if you look closely it's more a twisting than a falling movement. You have to keep in mind that the pressure on those planks is enormous, so they cannot slide that easily. But my guess is that the balance shifts with the removal of 2 pillars, and the lateral force is enough to trigger this twisting movement, which activates 1 system. Once that first system goes, it triggers the others and it's over.

      @@KaplaBen OK, I'm grasping at straws here (unintended pun) but maybe it could have been AIR? like, when something this massive is brought down, the air around it is pushed outwards (like a building implosion when you see all the material particles form a smoke-like fog that is pushed outwards by the air), so if you had an air movement strong enough it's plausible perhaps that it'd have moved that first plank in a twist as it did. Does that make sense to you?

    So funny and strange that I would love to build a 40 meters tall Lego tower. But it would be very annoying for me to build such a Kapla tower. Sounds like I'm no puzzle but a statics guy.
    Only the 11 000 € for the Lego bricks hold me back for a Lego world record.

    I have steady hands and I do trust them when I build solo, but I would be too afraid to participate in a group project, especially of this scale, afraid that I might be responsible for making it fall close to the finish.

      It was actually a drone with a camera. Which that itself is also risky because the wind from the propellers can blow on it, but I guess it wasn't likely due to the stability and distance.
